Well finally it's back on the ice. The UC Pioneers have begun their European Trip to Germany, Italy and Austria to face 4 professional clubs. The Pioneers defeated the Landshut Cannibals 4-3 yesterday. Tim Coffman scored twice. The recap can be found here.

Interestingly enough, there is also a castle in Germany known as Landshut Castle that is actually located in an entirely different part of the country. Landshut Castle is located in Bernkastle in the Mosel Valley, while Landshut, the city is located in Bavaria. There is a castle in Landshut, but it is known as the Trausnitz Castle. I had to look this up because I've been to Bernkastle, and couldn't recall the existence of an ice area - it's mostly known for its wine.

An American college travels to Germany to play hockey and the game winning goal was by a player from Japan!

There is a Norwich, VT but it is not near Norwich College, GPS beware ;)

3-0 this year in Europe so far...should be another exciting season like last season! :D

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

UC Pioneers finish their European Trip 4-0 with a 2-1 win over Kaufbeuren in Germany. I would guess they will just have to hang out there until flights resume to the east coast. (They flew out of Philadelphia, Friday the 21st, after connecting from Laguardia.)

hey just curious, did the incoming freshman/transfers make this trip, and/or did the seniors from last yr play in this???

From what the box score shows .....no.....

There were no freshman or transfers either.

Mind you Utica only had two sr's of which combined for only 27 games played and 6 points in 2011.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

incoming freshman and transfers are not eligible to go on these kinds of trips if they happen during the summer.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

I have seen Utica play a couple of times and Kudos to them they are good!!...On the contrary how sad are these professional teams losing to a Div 3 hockey program. Sounds more like glorified mens league hockey rather than Professional caliber hockey.

I don't know if they are or not, but they certainly could be men's league teams.

The Norwich men's soccer team took a trip to Spain at the beginning of this month and two of their games were against a men's league team.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

Guys go 4-0 on the Euro trip, scoring with 15 seconds left in the third period defeating ESV Kaufbeuren 2-1.

Lookin like a good season ahead for the men, hopefully another strong one like last season.

Now if only we can figure out how to beat Elmira ;)

No No...keep that monkey on your back.

As long as Adam Dekker doesn't come out of the woodwork with a fifth year of eligibility....;)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

haha i just hope Elmira doesn't become the only team in the divison who we cant come close to beating again like in the past :o

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2011-2012

All this buzz, anticipation, and european success is motivating me to actually get the site going again after a long. boring, newsless summer off....and hopefully the forums too.

however i don't know how much extra excitement i can take until this season gets started. We're t-minus 51 days(maybe 52 depending on how you look at it) until the puck drops for the RMC exhibition, and although it's the first day of class, there's a lot of students here, and i've talked to a few, who are very, very excited for this season to get underway because it's going to be special, there's no doubt about that. I mean just look at the returning depth at every position on the ice. the forward group is pretty much intact, the defense has another year under their belt after a rough time 2 years ago(although many of them didn't return), and Evan Smith has one of the best catching gloves i've seen since the inaugural season. And therrien is going to get plenty of solid minutes as well.

As for our friends(?) in Oswego, you're on notice. Both games of the season series are going to end tied or a one goal victory for either side. At this juncture, i can't see either team being a clear favorite, although having Beckwith back for another season certainly will help your cause. Looks like the vast majority of the lakers are back, really. Fill me in if there's any defections from that roster. But certainly, a great 2 game set up ahead and a great season are on the horizon. :)

10-4 on the 1 goal games with OZZ, should be fun, and I believe they meet early in the yr as well
