Utica College 2010-11

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Hobson's choice

1.Thanks;I was pretty sure you'd come through on that one...Though I gather that it's more accurately a "Morton's fork".

2.And,yes,my mistake,EC has wrapped up the league title regardless of tonight's result.(USCHO updated the standings with uncharacteristic alacrity last night, which threw me off.)UC will go to Aston next week no matter what.

3.Crap!

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Fishman'81, ncaacdn is correct. This week's action was just to determine where the next games were to be played. Utica will play Neumann and Hobart will play Manhattanville (in the "early" game). Now we know where (Neumann and Hobart).

There is still hope for a playoff game in Utica, however. Should Utica beat Neumann next week and should Elmira lose next week against the Hobart/M'ville winner of the opening round game, the championship game would be Utica hosting either Hobart or M'ville.

Edit: started this before your latest post, Fishman'81

Oy... A tie!!??! Well, I can't say for sure, but I have a feeling this what was probably best for BOTH teams.

Tough game. The final score was certainly indicative of the match. Let's see how the numbers shake-out now.

Utica - awesome venue. Despite my tendancy to be "Loud and obnoxious at hockey games", we sat amoungst some good people. Also, a sincere pleasure to put a face to the handle 'XCTiger'. Good to catch-up with PSUChamps2001 again as well.

Cheers!!!

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Awesome comeback by the Pioneers tonight for the draw in front of 3966. I have absolutely no voice left. The tie should not hurt their NCAA chances which should remain strong as long as they don't get smoked @ NU next week. Oh yeah, I hope Zappia is all right, looked like a leg injury.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

I think Utica should have a 1 minute rule...no selling beer until 1 min after the period ends and stop selling 1 minute before the period starts. Good game tho. UC's offense is a sight, their defense could be a tad better. Good emotional win. Physical game for sure! Now onto the weather...

Nice idea, but will one minute be enough?I figure that perpetually confused people will trundle down to the beer stands whenever they want to,anyway, and stand in line until the green light comes on,wondering about the delay.

Maybe they should just sell 12-packs at the door on the way in,to cut down on drunken fan movement during live play?(Tell 'em to bring their own own Lil' Playmate, and a urinal.)Seriously, though,The Aud is full of "fans" that know/care nothing about hockey, and it's a pretty frustrating place to watch a game, many nights.

Really nice comeback for UC.

EC is fast, they have hands, and being 3 down to that kind of team looks hopeless,as a general rule...But UC established themselves in the 2nd and made a good showing.Had a couple of great chances to get the win, too.

Utica graduates but two guys.Watch out for them next year,if not this one.

I wasn't going to say it but since you did...

The first time I was at a Utica game at the Aud was against Leb Valley or some ECACNE team...so I thought playing Elmira the crowd would be electric...far from it. The guy behind be made a comment the he missed 4 or the 6 goals scores and spent more time talking about Lockhead Martin. The folks in front were discussing their cruise in Mexico the whole second period and when Chalanda scored they asked "what just happened". The folks next to me asked me how long half time was and wanted to know if Elmira was a good team and why UC doesn't play Cornell...really? They do have a few decent sections, but for 4,000 people against a rival....doesn't hold water to an OSU/PSU game...even the Stafford Funeral Home is louder. Its too bad.

I had two major hockey thoughts on the night

A) Chalanda is a beast. Not the most graceful but is where he needs to be. The whole UC offensive attack is top notch.

B) However their defense was like watching the Buffalo Bills play in a superbowl. You just knew they were going to get beat. Give some credit to Elmira forwards, but the UC D got beat way too many times. Way too many turnovers. Smith is spot on.

The Prez-Meter was not very high there either. Maybe a 4 out of 10...very friendly place to watch a game, but way too much like a semi pro atmosphere and not college. But they still get bonus points for allowing bells and horns!!!

Re: Utica College 2010-11

1, I agree about the fans, just like First Arena, most have no idea about hockey. Guy in front of us went nuts because an EC player used his hand to "pass" the puck to his teammate while behind the EC net? Perfectly legal idiot!
2, EC showed the effect that the game the previous night took on them, ran out of gass in the third, I thought we were lucky to hang in there for the tie.
3, Drive home better than the drive up,
4, Killabrew has awesome wings, love those " everything sauce" wings. 5 stars!

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Sounds like a little attendance envy, to me. ;)

Ok, lets not count the 2,000 there last night who might have never been to a college hockey game before, (I had to let to folks behind be that after a 5 minute OT, the game ends in a tie.), or were there just because it is the place and the event to go to and perhaps don't understand hockey. What do you have left? 200 more than an average house at Plattsburgh! The fact was, that in the scope of the ECAC-W, last night's game had little meaning, so I as surprised that the UC attendance mark was pretty much shattered last night. (Some of us know the important meaning that the outcome had for NCAA selection, however.) I had season tickets at Wisconsin during my grad school days, I know what an electric environment it is when everybody in the joint is hanging on every pass and every hit, where the pep band keeps the crowd involved and are, at times, a bit naughty. I know that Utica lacks that, and I miss the excitement that was at the old UW barn, where there were over 8000 season tickets holders on Friday and a different 8000 season ticket holders on Saturday. But the fact is that last night almost 4,000 people attended a D-III hockey game (for a college that has about 2500 students) and that has to be a good thing.

By the way, the person who won chuck-a-puck was Todd Hutton, the President of Utica College. He is having a bad year at chuck-a-puck, this was the first one he won.

Far from envy, more like disappointing. We've had the 3,500+ attendance and it was a million times more electric. Ill take 2000 loud fans then 4000 who are mostly there to drink beer...

3,500? How many times this year?

Still, did you miss the wink? ;)

I, too, wish for a louder, more appreciative crowd. One that knows that when you kill off 2 minutes of 5 on 3 every one should be on their feet yelling. PSU has a long, successful history in hockey at this level. Good for them. They also had a poster here a few weeks ago thinking (well, more like b*tch*ng) he had wasted his ticket money because PSU had lost a game or two and he was owed something better. Hopefully, each year UC and the fans at the AUD will get better. Remember that Manhattanville, Neumann, and UC all started about the same time, 10-12 years ago. Of the three, only Utica has built any kind of fan base.

Sorry if you were personally disappointed at the evening. If you thought it was disappointing for us, don't lose any sleep about it. UC plays off campus at a county owned facility that has many other events. The College wants the games to be community events, that are affordable and family friendly. Could it be better? You bet. Could it be worse? Certainly, UC almost signed a contract with the Whitestown Rec. Center for our home ice 10 years ago, or we could have gone the way of LVC.

Right now, I'm hoping for the possible chance of more UC hockey at the AUD this year. Hey, maybe your team will be there. :D

Re: Utica College 2010-11

I prefer atmosphere over size any day... My travels this yr have been limited to Oswego, Elmira, Plattsburgh and Manhattanville.... M'ville @ Playland is the worst...tween birthday parties, lousy site lines from bleachers four or five rows high...they need a rink they can call their own that isn't a half hour away from campus during rush hour...enough has been written about the Domes being 14 miles off campus in the middle of nowhere...when your capacity is twice the student enrollment you can figure out why they do what they do.... I think of Stafford as a traditional, old school barn with charm - I was surprised to see virtually no students in a surprisingly small student section in attendance, but i think their break schedule might have had more to do with it...Campus Center is growing on me (Romney in the 70's was a blast)....I have to say the student section, some 1500 strong, is awesome and the location smack in the middle of campus creates a buzz that every college should aspire to.....

Re: Utica College 2010-11

Hey Remy, what did you think of EC's play last night? I always like to hear the perspective of a neutral observer!

Hey Remy, what did you think of EC's play last night? I always like to hear the perspective of a neutral observer!

I thought they looked fast and forchecked the Utica D forcing several turnovers. They got up by 3 and then went into cruise control. Defensively I thought Elmira did well. McDonald couldn't really be faulted on any of the goals. That 3rd (?) Elmira goal (the 3 on 1) from the knees was just amazing. It almost looked as if Elmira ran out of gas. I still think you can put a blanket over 6 or 7 teams in the east this year they are so even. Utica showed great composure but I'm not sold that they are a title contender. However, an Elmira/Oswego match up would be a great one. Having seen Elmira in their first game, mid season, and now end of the season massive improvements. Had they played this way all season I wouldn't have an issue putting them #1 in the East.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

OK Guys(and gals)...From a D1 guy who goes to Utica occaisonally. I passed up going to Gate-Harvard(sacriledge if Gate was better)
Place was packed...absolutely no cheering...Crowd should have been a major factor, wasn't. I agree with other posters, people are there for something to do(drink I guess) but beers are five bucks, you wonder where some people get thirty dollars for a round. Anyhoo.

Elmira looked way bigger than the skinny UC players. Halfway thru the second at 3-0 wife wanted to leave and I said one more goal then decide. 3-1 after two and I said if Elmira scores the next we'll go. Third period UC started hitting and tied it and it turned into a great game. Coffman by far is their best player. UC goaltending is very good. I was totally surprised after 3-0 that we came back. Still hoping for an NCAA game at the Aud.

Re: Utica College 2010-11

I'll agree with all of you about the fans and whatnot.

i'm in charge of the organized chants behind the penalty box region(when mr. sallustio isin't around) and i try, but there's only so much even i can do. and why?

because a majority of the aud crowd is facetimers. i tried to get a wave going. told all the people in the corner sections what i wanted and when. time came and nobody moved. i keep telling people more needs to be done, and they're content to sit on their hands. we try to get chants going and when only 10 people join in in a crowd of 3,900 nothing is going to happen. and we're starting to get upset about it too.

and saying anything about it during a game is tough because you've gotta worry about A. getting pummeled by some drunk, or B. getting taken away by security because they think you're drunk when in all reality you're trying to enhance the atmosphere.

the other thing that's killing us is the fact that this isint an on-campus venue. it's all adults down where i sit, and the lack of interested kids makes it tough to get anything going. the old rats don't want to listen to a couple of 19 year old kids and it irks the hell out of us.

turning this around now is a lost cause for the year whether we get another game or not. but, assuming i remain in utica next year(I'm an MV Student), i'm going to see what i can do about getting the pioneer posse to be an official student organization of the college again so that we can get the word out to on-campus kids, make sure they get down and back ok(i know that shuttle is a problem) and enhance the college hockey experience in utica for everyone.

it's an uphill battle, but we're willing to work on it.

drop me a line if you have any suggestions.

This sounds a lot like Oswego was right before I got there and in the early days of the CC.

Keep working at it. They'll learn eventually. The Oswego student section is almost there. Just gotta get everyone to stand for the game and then we'll be there.
