USCHO Poster's Poll: '17-'18

Re: USCHO Poster's Poll: '17-'18

USCHO has RMU in tenth and I’m ok with it for now. They probably need to sweep their next two series against Lindenwood and RIT to stay ranked and that’s fair, assuming those vying for a ranking don’t also have losses. I justify their current ranking by asking who I might put ahead of them right now? I don’t think there is anyone below them with a better record. UNH has the same record as RMU, so maybe you could argue UNH should be there instead of RMU. If UNH won both its games this past weekend at home they probably would be ranked, and RMU out. The poll tends to be a bit sticky though up and down, so RMU might be getting the benefit of the doubt this week. Additionally the ties and loss were on the road, another thing voters might consider.

I know strength of schedule is a thing, but I respect a team that just goes out and gets W’s pretty consistently, like RMU did last year and is trying to do this year. If we too often have to justify losses, at some point it’s like are these guys really good? And that’s tough, because a lot of times the answer is “yes, but...explanation of loss.” Northeastern seems to be paying a price for that right now. Eventually Minnesota will, if they don’t start winning consistently. My Lakers, yea I I think they are good, but they have to WIN. RMU does that, or at least didn’t lose on the road this week, to a team that’s gaining respect.

So for now, I like RMU at ten right now. If they make a habit of losing though, they need to go. I look forward to seeing them more in the CHA. So far the CHA has challenged them more than their non conference schedule. We’ll see if that continues.

Re: USCHO Poster's Poll: '17-'18

1. Wisconsin - Nobody else seems to want it, so...
2. bc - They'd be powerless without Watts.
3. OSU - Being idle is better than slipping up like some of their competitors
4. Clarkson - Kinda that old school ABC Wide World of Sports thing in reverse.
5. Colgate - Looked good until they crapped the bed Saturday.
6. Minnesota - Just not very good right now and the WCHA kinda sucks as well.
7. UNH - Wait...What?
8. Providence - Either they're pretty good or Northeastern isn't any good.
9. Cornell - Cheel nightmare maybe exposed them?
10. St Lawrence - Kinda similar to Minnesota except that the ECAC doesn't suck.

....the WCHA kinda sucks as well.....except that the ECAC doesn't suck.

The WCHA has historically been the strongest conference in D1 women's hockey. I don't think anyone is dumb enough to argue that, but do you think the power is now slowly and steadily shifting east? With Clarkson taking 2 of the last 3 national championships maybe the eastern teams are starting to believe the WCHA isn't unbeatable anymore. I'd say any mystique the Gophers used to have has gone right out the window so far this season unless they can somehow return to form, but maybe even they don't believe their own hype anymore. Once that kind of self-belief is broken it's very hard to recapture. Similarly, once other teams start believing they can beat the Gophers, the Badgers, etc, that new-found belief is sometimes just enough to make it happen.

Re: USCHO Poster's Poll: '17-'18

I think that the ECAC has caught up to the WCHA. This year, the ECAC is stronger, in part because there are 6 WCHA players centralized and only one from the ECAC. I expect the WCHA to be more competitive with the ECAC next year.

I think the ECAC has always been 2nd to the WCHA, with Hockey East 3rd in line, and the CHA always being dead last by quite a margin. It's nice to see the WCHA not being as dominant as they have been in the past. It gets boring to see the same teams winning all the time. Same applies to the D3 level too. I like seeing different teams challenging and beating the perennial favorites otherwise it gets extremely boring to follow all season long when it's always so predictable.
