Yeah... that was the one I really got into them over.

We've talked about this in here before, but for me, tied to my first serious girlfriend.

Album has been done for me since.

Not that's there's any lingering feelings or disdain for her. Just too much of a period piece in my life and I can't find context for it anymore.

Not even in nostalgia.

Just blank now.

I can understand that. There are certain songs overall that are forever tied to certain people. Sometimes I can listen to them, sometimes I can't.

Like I said... doesn't bring me pain or anger. It's just so tied to her that it seems used up somehow.


I remember dancing with her and some other girls from the resort I was working at summer of 88 to Just like Heaven in a townie bar up north in black jeans and black high tops (or maybe my combat boots).

I SO should have gotten my arse kicked that night. :D

But I didn't. :cool:


The song that makes me nostalgic for that relationship or time in my life is the Kid Rock one, All Summer Long.

Cheesy for that to be the case, but it paints the right picture.

All Summer Long DEFINITELY makes me nostalgic. There was a campground just outside of the metro (well, now it's not) that my friends always went to for all the major summer holidays. And yes, I'd like to see that girl again, just to catch up and such. We ended on good terms.

Fridays also had Rich Hall and Larry David. Still remember the Kaufman episode, That Darn Reagan, Dick, Battle Boy...

This could have easily gone in the TV thread but my recollection of We Didn't Start the Fire is pretty different from Adam Goldberg's. I was a big fan of Piano Man and Glass Houses but I could have sworn that song despite it's being played a lot was pretty widely panned.

We Didn't Start The Fire was panned, unfortunately. I think it was a very good song, even though (*sigh*) it did pale to his greatest hits.

The Railway Children - Recurrence


Had their first two on vinyl.

Was drawn to the jangly guitar work.

Vocalist is pretty bland.

REM - Reckoning

Parents finally relented and allowed me to join BMG coz it was a lesser commitment than Columbia House and this was one of the 4 I got.

Have never liked another REM album nearly as much although Life's Rich Pageant was the other one that I loved.

Fables of the Reconstruction is great. I've never heard anything else by REM that didn't make me want to strangle Michael Stipe with his own self-regard.

Asked for and received a book for Xmas.


Guy Pratt - My Bass and Other Animals

Bassist for Floyd and Gilmour since 1987 and he's also been a session musician and toured with a few other decently famous outfits.


Supposed to be pretty entertaining and am looking forward to it.

I've seen him in interviews and he's funny.

Actually does standup around this material and people love his act.



Will have to wait as I'm reading Killing Bono for the second time.

Honestly can't recommend this book any more highly if you are (or were) a U2 fan (even if you hate them now) or if you were into punk and post punk back in the late 70s/early 80s.

Written by Neil McCormick who grew up with the members of U2 and who is now the rock critic for The Guardian.



The book is actually about Neil's quest for rock stardom while he watches his old mates achieve it for themselves.

Listening to Fables now and didn't recall ever really being into this album yet I know all of the songs so far.

Must have listened to it a whole lot more than I remember and more than just the two singles.

Very sure that I haven't laid ears on this since about 1990.


Out of Time was my exit door for REM and I've not heard a new album since and only listen to them at all every few years and that's usually Reckoning, LRP or Document.


Was checking something out on WIKI and see that Buren Fowler played rhythm with them 86-87. Had no idea.

He went on to be in Drivin' 'n' Cryin' and I was a fan for a bit and the one time I saw them live in 91, I was on the rail. Had been there through a few crappy openers and just as they take the stage this gorilla of a d-bag meathead forces his way with his GF to the rail right next to me.

I don't give up my space as he expected and we spend the show jostling back and forth – the people on the other side gave him room.

At the end of the show, Buren flicks his guitar pick right to me – makes eye contact, so was intended for me - and I snag it right before gorilla d-bag can react and try to steal it.

He was ****ed and I smirked. :D

I don't care about guitar picks and all that, but was glad that assmunch didn't get it.

Great show, btw.

Was sore from head banging. :D



PS - Did have that pick for many years though and kept it in my CD of Mystery Road. Not sure if I still have it as the CD went away with the rest of my discs about 5-10 years ago.

You really should give Automatic for the People a listen. I doubt there's a fan that made it at least that far that wouldn't put it into their Top 5 of REM releases. New Adventures in Hi-Fi has some great tracks and had them continuing with experimentation without I think completely leaving behind what made REM great, and Accelerate is the only album past 1996 worth a ****. I can't listen to Out of Time anymore which is weird because I enjoyed it when first released even if Shiny Happy People made me want to vomit.

SS - I've tried. Within the past few years even.

Couldn't get through Auto.



I actually liked Out of Time to a decent degree back then.

I didn't mind Shinny Happy or at least loved the riff enough to forgive.

I just moved in a different direction in the music I was listening to at that time in my life and have never recaptured any major like for REM.

That's cause it's their best album.

At Record Store Day a few years ago, I got Mike Mills to sign my copy.
