Silversun Pickups - Panic Switch
Snow Patrol - Get Balsamic Vinegar...Quick You Fool
Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Circle
Blues Traveler - 100 Years

The Silversun Pickups video had a link to a Smashing Pumpkins live performance that had been recorded within the last couple years - didn't see the exact date.

Billy Corgan's (or however his name's spelled) lyrics and voice really don't fit his appearance. He looks like an old man, singing a young person's complaint song.

ETA: You know, complaint isn't the right word. Emotional distress at how the world doesn't quite work for him, maybe that would be a more concise way of putting it.

:)

I always thought of it as white suburban teenage angst.

He's my age and grew up in a similar suburb of Chicago. First 3 or 4 albums nailed my teenaged childhood in so many ways.

I saw Corgan being interviewed recently (by recently it might have been 2 years ago my memory sucks) with his at the time new Pumpkins ensemble and irrc they were all female 20-somethings. It looked really forced if not creepy.

Somewhat unrelated but funny enough to reference: Donald Trump's Speeches As An Early 2000s Emo Song

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Steel Panther #4, Lower the Bar dropped last week. The last one, All You Can Eat, grew on me a fair bit after some initially lukewarm thoughts.

Overall, a bit of a departure from their usual over-the-top lyrics. The first 5 tracks are what you expect, plus the cover of "She's Tight" is solid and right up their alley, and "Pu55y Ain't Free" is an instantly relatable fan favorite for their male base :p. However, I'm left scratching my head at "Now the Fun Starts" and "Momentary Epiphany" - are these supposed to be sarcastic jabs at cautionary drug songs (like "18 and Life" or "Wasted Time"), or are they really trying to get serious now? Neither of these songs is anything like the comedic and awesome "I Like Drugs" from Balls Out.

Rewatched some of Hip Hop Evolution on Netflix tonight. Still mesmerized by it. Such an amazing doc.

In the car, I've been playing Neil Diamond and Elton John. Really evokes memories of sitting with my mom, listening to this stuff, having a good time with her. At Mom's funeral in 2010, I missed a golden opportunity to honor her with "Done Too Soon" by Neil Diamond.

Fastball: All The Pain Money Can Buy
Better Than Ezra: Deluxe

Found them at Goodwill for $3 each. And listening to the Fastball CD... they were pretty good.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

I bought that Fastball cd purely because I loved, loved, loved Fire Escape. It was a total surprise to me how good that whole thing was, way better than it had any right to be. Just a lovely bit of power pop.

I still loathe The Way, though.

I bought it for "Out of My Head," but "Better Than It Was" stuck out at me. And listening to the lyrics of that song, given that I got a better job and got out of a dilapidated house... it really is better than it was for me.

Sarah McLachlan: Surfacing

The song "Angel" has helped me through difficult times....

Oasis: Be Here Now

Whoever told me that they wrote this album while high on cocaine.... you were right.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Never a wrong time for Sinatra.

Those arrangements, though. Waffle House serves up less syrup and lard.

Ol' Blue Eyes had a wonderful voice, but on many of his pieces it's overlayed with so many strings and so much schmaltz it's unlistenable. Not his fault, but it's dreck.

The brass usually gets to me.

I love hearing him for about 4 or 5 songs and then I just have to shut it off.

Ska would be so great if it didn't beat me over the head with horns...

See, as a (former) trumpet player I don't care. We're better than you, and we're the loudest, most arrogant pr!cks of the group because we know it. :D

The brass is never the problem with 50s crooner music. It's partly syrupy strings and partly maudlin singers. Frank's voice is beautiful but he has his share of godawful Catskills gunk. Dude never said no to a paycheck, so he wound up with a mountain of garbage to go with an admittedly sizable hillock of great songs.

It actually bothers me a lot more with Frank because he was such a great performer (when he wanted to be) and really knew what he was doing (when he cared). He was just very, very lazy -- he spent the last 30 years of his career with feet up and mind in neutral. But if Gary Cullen had had a work ethic he would have won Hobey Baker.
