Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Skin Yard - 1000 Smiling Knuckles

They were one of the formative 'grunge' groups (all of the bands on the Deep Six compilation LP were essentially the 'Original 6' of the sound), but I'm just now getting around to this particular group. Since the title track is hipster-licious, I figured why not start with their whole 1991 disc.

They sound almost exactly like Ultramega OK-era Soundgarden from 3 years earlier (albeit a touch more polished). But since they both started around '85, the eternal question is - who copied whom? ;)

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Can you listen to this and not hear the guitar from "Hells Bells" kick in?

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

In the car, I have "Automatic for the People" by R.E.M on repeat. Every time "Nightswimming" comes on, I turn it up and sing along at the top of my lungs.

On the stereo right now... "Kind Of Blue" by Miles Davis. Hearing the pure joy and exuberance come from the music is kind of cheering me up right now.

Stabbing Westward: "Darkest Days."

Takes me back to playing Duke Nukem: Time To Kill on PS1 and hearing "The Thing I Hate" as the intro video.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

My listening tends to go in phases. I'm currently in a "mountain music" phase. My father was from the hills of TN so I grew up listening to him playing a lot of bluegrass, the Carter Family, Jimmy Rogers, etc. If that's a genre that appeals to you, you need to check out The Steel Wheels. These guys are fabulous musicians with solid harmonies. Saw them recently at Bell's Brewery so it was not only a great concert but great beer as well. The link below will let you download a live album of theirs for free.

I've never been as big a fan of his solo work as I am of the Police (although more than a dozen of us snagged front row seats for Nothing Like the Sun tour at Riverfest in 1988 and it was a freaking blast), but Sting is performing live for a CD release party tonight on iHeart at 8 EST.

R.E.M- Green

Gets better every time I hear it. :)

Like I said a year or two ago, it's their best. If you don't agree now, you likely will in time. :p

Speaking of albums that improve with repeated listening, Alter Bridge - The Last Hero, dropped back in early October. It's still not as good as Fortess, but it keeps getting better with each spin.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Green is not their best, but it's very good. If I had to rank them it be something like the following clusters:

Document
Life's Rich Pageant
Green

Murmur
Reckoning
Automatic for the People

New Adventures in Hi-Fi
Fables of the Reconstruction
Chronic Town

Collapse Into Now
Out of Time
Monster

Accelerate
Up
Reveal

Around the Sun

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

The new Metallica LP is far better than I expected.

This would fit right in as the next logical step after AJFA had they continued in that direction. Sounds like they're having fun again.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

Sticky Fingers

Mentioned them in here once before. Really couldn't recommend them any higher.

Aussie band that probably falls in the "alternative" bucket.

Had tickets to go to their show last month in Chicago with the boy and they cancelled/rescheduled for spring. Bummed but still going and the boy likes them as much as I do.

Have been going to some shows with my son and it's been fun. Saw Ziggy Marley a couple months ago and then Stick Figure (NOT Sticky Fingers) and The Movement - Cali-type "reggae" - a couple weeks ago.

He really liked Ziggy and I was happy to expose him to that. He LOVED Stick Figure/The Movement and a couple of his buddies were also there.

Cool and surreal to see your kid on the floor of a club like you were many, many years before. :)

Taking him to Roger Waters next summer. Have tix to both nights in Chicago. One night with him and one with the wife.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

For all the Christmas music I've heard this year, at least I haven't heard "Christmas Shoes." That has to be the worst Christmas song ever, and I thought "Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney made me vomit.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

I recently stumbled across The Beta Band thanks to my iHeart mix although they disbanded in 2004. If you're a fan of any of the following I recommend: Mercury Rev, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals, Spiritualized, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Beck, Spoon, Doves or Gomez. That's a wide spectrum but so is their sound. :)

"I will now sell 5 copies of The 3 EP's by The Beta Band".

"Do it!"

Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

The new Stones covers lp is FANTASTIC. Best release by them in 30 years
