USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

So I'm by the bonfire enjoying some cocktails and watching a U2 show (on my laptop) that is going on right now on something called Periscope - a phone app that allows you to broadcast to the world whatever you are recording on your phone. In real time.

The kids think nothing of this, but as I stop to contemplate it and remember 1987 when I saw my first U2 show and how much has changed in how we consume this stuff since then...

I'm amazed.
That hit me when bbdl was in Sweden, and he/me/another friend (local) were finalizing plans to meet in Traverse City MI, in real time. We're all half a world away, conversing with each other, like we were in the same room, talking about a meeting that was 11 hours away from the closest person in the convo.

Sounds like their current tour is pretty cool with them going "back in time" as the night progresses from the stage setup to the way the music is played.

Start the show with washing machines etc on stage, progress to lasers...

Apparently end the show with songs off the first couple albums on a stripped down stage.

Wonder if they both rock the double neck guitars and if Geddy plays the old organ/keyboard thingy.

Yikes - wonder if they sport the feathered hair and the lame-*** bass Geddy had during the later 80s.

Wish is was closer than Chicago. :(

I've been heavy on Rush the past week or so. We have tickets to the Boston show. Looking forward to it. The reviews have been good so far.

If I wasn't already going to several Chicago shows this summer, I'd seriously consider it. I'm tapped out though.

Have fun.

Popular songs r 4 dum peepl

A new study is claiming that over the past 10 years, song lyrics have become ... dumber!

If you're surprised (or, more likely, not) by this info, here's how it was calculated: Andrew Powell-Morse of ticket marketplace Seat Smart selected 225 songs between 2005 and 2014 that topped Billboard’s Pop, Country, Rock and Hip-hop charts for three weeks. Then he plugged them into an online Readability calculator.

The result? An average reading level equivalent to that of a third-grader. And when you break it down by artist, things get even more interesting.

...

Now, the online Readability calculator used in this study can’t judge a song’s metaphors or hidden meanings, which would explain why Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” received a lower reading level than Rihanna’s “Diamonds."

Amy Winehouse- "Frank"

Her debut, and definitely the theme was "drunk girl telling her experiences to the world." I think Amy did it better than Florence, though.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Yep, between Amy Winehouse, Florence + The Machine, The National, Motion City Soundtrack, etc, alcohol-soaked lyrics will be the theme of my music selection today.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I've seen that before, and it's not at all surprising. It's like the Axis of Awesome - 4 Chord Song where they put some 20 songs together that all use - take a guess - all the same four chords.

Related to this, Tom Bernard has been going off lately about new songs that all just riffs on old music. Every time a bass line or anything matches up with an older song, he just starts going off about song writers running out of ideas. He's really gone off the deep end with it.

For Tommy B, it's ratings. I mean, punk uses three chords, but they don't try to be anything they are not. Other music (rock, country, pop, whatever) have the same formula, but they try and pretend they don't. It's maddening. I know there's a Nickelback comparison out there (which, IMO, is the Godwin's Law of all music sounding the same). It's the pretense of "hey, we're different!" No, you're not.

Fun with Ticketmaster. Online trying to get Dead tix. It's a bloodbath I tell ya.

Didn't get any tickets that day.

They released some more tickets today and I scored 2 for the 7/3 show. At least I'm getting to one of the shows. :)

Set me back $440.

Oh well... it's only food. I can go without...

New album by Peace.

7 songs in and 4 were excellent and the other 3 were meh although not bad.

Overall liking it quite a bit.

Edit: definitely better than the first album although that one is good too.

Listened to the full new A$AP Rocky (:p) album today a couple of times and really liked it.

"High Violet." I listen to this a lot before big races. "Conversation 16" puts me in the mood to race.
