While I totally agree that Neil Diamond is now a schlockmeister of the highest degree, he wasn't always this way. Hot August Night is a pretty **** good album for the most part.

The reverberations from Sublime are still being felt.

I got nothing against Neil Diamond and own several (early) albums - just don't wanna hear it for an hour or more in a bar. :)

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

One of my favorite jukebox stories was when a couple of my friends were out at a bar one night and one of them came back to the table and said, "Guys, we need to get the **** out of here. NOW." Puzzled looks all around. "I just dropped $10 worth of Free Bird in the jukebox."

:D

That would be fun, but the barkeep would eventually just reset it.

Did that one night with Song B-19
Asked for a refund when the bartender reset the jukebox. Told him we've been kicked out of better places.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Well, you can probably say this same about the 80's, which I think was the best decade, but to me, the 90's seemed to be a lot of one-hit wonders sandwiched in around a few bands that actually were able to carve out fairly successful long term careers, Pearl Jam probably being the most prominent.

Trying to figure out the equivalencies here - assume we're talking about what would be considered "alternative" bands for each era? Ones that had staying power?

The 80s - U2, REM (are they still active?), The Cure

The 90s - Pearl Jam, Green Day, Radiohead, Weezer

And then non-active bands or ones that broke up early that are still revered or at least well thought of by more than just the hardcore and probably would have lasted long-term...

The 80s - Replacements, Smiths, INXS

The 90s - Nirvana, Jane's, Sublime

I agree with Rufus on his take on the 80s for the most part, although I'd hedge that a lot of the obscure bands were obscure for a reason and listening to them now, they don't hold up. They sound dated. They sound 80s.

I enjoyed them back in the day and watched 120 minutes each week and went to the cool record stores to grab their albums - still have many of them.

Now they're mostly good for farming a nostalgic playlist - which is exactly what the 90s one that I just finished listening to was/is.

Nothing wrong with that. Nostalgia can bring a smile... a big grin, even. Can also offer perspective (as SS alluded) as to how we got to where we are.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

As with any decade, some was, some wasn't. Remember Bobby Goldsboro or Paul Anka and Engelbert Humperdinck? Creed, Seven Mary Three, Boyz II Men and Celine Dion?

I think there's always a tendency, and most prominent among those who never really lived through the time period in question, to dismiss all the crap that existed, and just think about the good stuff. There was a ton of dreadful music released in the 60's as well.

Stuff like this.

Speaking of Creed. Scott Stapp is playing the Leinie's Lodge Bandshell at the MN State Fair. Is it bad that I'm looking forward to it in an oddly humorous way? I want to laugh at the horrible bad Creed songs being sung by the actual lead singer at a free stage at a state fair. :D

No. That bandshell is fantastic for watching free terrible 90s music. Boyz II Men and Hanson have played there in recent years.

REM retired either last year or in 2012, I forget which. It was a mutual decision the band made, not a giant blow up and break up.

I thought maybe that was the case, but they certainly qualify as a band that had staying power and would still if they chose to be active.

Shuffling the iPod today while working from home. Some recent plays were Weezer, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, Haim, Young the Giant, Prince, Love & Rockets, Arcade Fire, Gary Clark Jr and The Beatles.

Gary Clark Jr btw is outstanding and I recommend to anyone with a soul.
