Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

In an effort to put a smile on my face, I'm listening to Cloud Cult today. For some reason, "Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)" always cheers me up.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Just decided, going to Boston tomorrow to see The Replacements. Hopefully, it's amazing.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I thought they were pretty amazing. Was shooting a lot of video, and then decided to stop devoting my attention to that, put the camera away, and just enjoy the show. And it was a lot more fun after doing so.

Now that said, my caveats as a 'mats fan. I'm not a huge fan of the first record, that Husker Du-punkiness doesn't really do much for me, and to me seems kind of phony, Paul trying to be what he thinks the band and the target audience want him to be. And so too much from that first record to make me go really nuts over(Takin' a Ride, Love You til Friday, I'm in Trouble, and also White and Lazy from Stink). I like it well enough, but it's not their best work. I would have dropped any one of those to have heard Left of the Dial, Little Mascara, Nevermind, Hold My Life, etc). But they also did crackin' versions of Take Me Down to the Hospital and Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out, with a little coda from Hendrix' Third Stone From the Sun tacked on. And a kicking cover of the J5's I Want You back going into Color Me Impressed. Paul let go a wry "Let's see how well they like this one" before kicking that one off.

And that was the real highlight of the show for me: Seeing these guys looking like they were actually having fun playing, laughing and joking with each other on stage, trading comments in each other's ear when away from the mic. Too many of the bands I saw looked so deadly serious, they were doing a performance, after all. The 'mats looked like they were having a ball just being able to get up on a stage and play music. The rapport between Paul and Tommy seemed so genuine and easy, it's hard to imagine the rifts which had once existed such a long time ago. They looked the best of pals. And Dave Minehan fit right in there with them. A long-time Westerberg sideman, he even looks like he fits in; same age, same disheveled, tousled look. Joking right along there with them. And while I was afraid that it would just be another Westerberg and backing band like other tours of his I had seen, Tommy's presence really did make it seem like a real Replacements show. If Chris had been there it would have been heaven.

And as opposed to those other Westerberg solo tours I had seen, he seemed really committed and energized to be there, he was really putting himself into it, whereas on his own, he affected a nonchalant, didn't really give a chit sort of demeanor. Forget the words, start and stop a song, forget it, who cares? And yeah, he forgot some lyrics, but he didn't just give up and call it and move on, Tommy jumped over to him and fed him a verse to Androgynous, but the crowd was already there, finishing it for him, and then Paul jumped right back in for the chorus. He also looked like he was into it, wasn't wearing those stupid rose-colored shades he's been affecting for years. Back to rocking.

One of the funny bits of the night happened before the band even took the stage. They had two stages going, alternating sets. This band called The 1975 played on the stage before them, they seemed ok, but kinda pretty and tween-girl appealing. So once their set ended, all the 18-20 year olds were streaming toward the back, heading away from the stage, while all the old gray-haireds like myself were heading forward to secure a good spot.

Have seen two reviews of the show, one obviously from someone younger who was impressed by the younger acts like 21 Pilots, who I actually kinda liked, even though they were so far from my thing, and The 1975, who I can't quite figure out if they were ok, or just blatantly poseurs, who wasn't too impressed

But for the college kids, who made up the majority of the audience, beach balls and Jenga proved more interesting than the final act performing on the red stage.
Which says a lot about today's college kids.

And then this one from someone who I'd guess was more old school.

The band: Minehan fits right in, and got a good hand, being a Boston boy.

This is what I mean by Paul and Tommy getting along. All show like this

Somewhere around the left-center of this picture I'm in there. I recognize a couple of the faces on the right in focus that I could see when I'd turn and look back to my left.

Looked at the video I shot on my camera, and while the pictures look good, sound is atrocious. probably had my finger covering the mic or something. Maybe it'll sound better once I upload to the computer. Hopefully I can find a video torrent of this show somewhere.

My seventh Replacements show.

Great review. Thanks!

Love hearing that they seemed to be having a ball doing it. I'd rather see that from a show like this than note for note professionalism or seriousness.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

If you're an iTunes customer, U2 has just released a new album for free download called Songs of Innocence. It's in connection to the new iPhone6 promotion they're involved in and was launched today.

Thanks for the heads up.

Guess they kept that a pretty good secret... or at least I sure as heck didn't hear about it.

Listening now.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

It broke my Music app. I can't download it.

Tangent: I hope iOS 8 has a better native Music app.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Free download to first 500 million people. Album officially released October 13th - with bonus tracks and acoustic versions.

It appears that the U2 site that I frequent (sporadically) didn't even have wind of it till this morning.

If so, that's a pretty well kept secret in this day and age.

I just checked iTunes on my phone and I've automatically purchased it without having to do anything. So anyone with an iPhone has likely already purchased it, and then it's everyone else who wants it just has to search for it using their computers.

Also, I'm waiting until I get home to download it to my iPhone, I need to update my playlist as it reverted to my old iPhone 4 playlist after my computer crashed a couple months ago.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Oh yeah, new Interpol today too. Just downloaded it and will listen a little later.

Funny that Interpol opened for U2 on the last tour. Guess U2 is taking the headliner's role again today? ;):D

I know, I know... not for our resident Interpol diehards. :p

Four songs in and I'm DIGGING it.

Of course, I'm our resident U2 diehard, so there's that... :p

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

There are Interpol diehards?

Just wait...

And based on what I'm hearing right now, the boys in U2 (or at least Edge) took a shine to Interpol. Can hear it pretty clearly at times in these new songs.

I'm not one to form impressions quickly when it comes to new albums (unless it be "meh") - even from my favorite artists. Usually have to listen a few times and am often more critical of my favorites as they are up against what they've done before. I'm also not prone to declare the most recent work as the "best evah" as many seem to be - simply coz it's new and fresh.

After one listen, I'm comfortable saying that this is easily their best since Achtung Baby.

I'll recant if necessary, but on the second listen, I'm doubtful that I'll be compelled to.

Amazing.

But I will also be getting the new U2 release - never miss one.

You probably already have it if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch.

It's on all of our devices. The little one just walked by and was playing it on his Touch. I've only downloaded it to this computer so far.
