Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

Read that Radiohead will be recording their ninth studio album. Wonder if they'll continue the electronic "King of Limbs" phase they're in, or will it be more like "The Bends" or "OK Computer?"

Given most of Thom Yorke's work away from the band is of the electronica mold, I'm not hopeful they'll fully return to their older style. I've liked some of their later works, but it all seems to run together for me.

Yep. I like all of their stuff, but holy crap do I crank up paranoid android when it comes on.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

I missed it, but Steel Panther put a new album out in April. "Pussywhipped" has whiffs of black album Metallica. The bad sex humor highlights are undoubtedly "Gloryhole", "Gangbang at the Old Folks Home", and the alternate acoustic version of "She's on the Rag" which kind of sounds like all the hair bands that tried to go country/grunge in 1993 or so (plus better lyrics, and the album version has too much of a modern sound). The hooks on this one, to my ear, are weaker and less consistent than Balls Out, but they nailed a Def Leppard style parody called "The Burden of Being Wonderful", which helps make up for that.

That said, on first pass, this was a letdown. Nothing on the level of "Community Property", "The Shocker", "Just Like Tiger Woods", or "I Like Drugs".

Runnin' Down A Dream - documentary on Tom Petty et al. One of my favorites. An early quote in was, "Great show of 2.5 hours and you can sing along with every song".

Reminds of seeing Pearl Jam open for him a few years back. Pearl Jam put on a great show in which the crowd was really into it from start to finish. It was a younger looking crowd and I was curious to see what would happen once Tom Petty came on stage. Not only did every single person in that place stick around but just as a quote said every word of every song was sang with huge enthusiasm.

That was a great night and my friends and I commented that it was an old school classic rock and roll show.

On my (now) once or twice a year Dead kick. Usually materializes during the summer as certain music just goes with summer drives and time on the deck. Those summer drives used to end at a Dead show. If I could go back in time and do (repeat) anything again, a Dead show would be right near the top of the list - nothing else like it.

Have done maybe 9 or 10 shows in the past week or so from 1987 - 1991.

Currently hearing 9/25/91.

Jenny Lewis released a new album yesterday, The Voyager. She called it a very personal album, having written a song for her recently departed father and tossing in references to a wedding coming up in May. (The wedding mentions might just be a nothing, though.) While I like much of it, especially Late Bloomer, the whole thing is over produced. A number of those songs would benefit from a rawer feel. I liked her 2005 Acid Tongue release much better.

The Cure - 11/16/84 Washington DC

Touring in support of The Top.

Soundboard recording that I just got and am amazed at the sound quality. The performance is outstanding too.

This show came towards the end of my favorite era of The Cure although it could be argued that the first era ended with Pornography and the second ended with Kiss Me x3. Long and short is that I didn't like anything after Kiss Me x3 as much as I liked everything up to that point.

This show sounds (almost) as good as my audio rip of In Orange. What a score!

I just learned of this new kid out there called Benjamin Booker, his first CD release is set for August 19. I've heard a couple of his songs, watching the videos on YouTube, I didn't know the younger guys were looking to make rock n' roll laced with a hint of the blues. From those first two songs I heard, this kid is going to be right up my alley.

Went to the McCartney concert this weekend. That guy can still effing sing. (He was actually playing the instruments and singing as well.). Just incredible.

The prize for the best band name I've heard in a while goes to the Finnish band Steve'n'Seagulls.

ETA: I should add, they're a bluegrass band that does covers of rock hits. This one is a cover of a AC/DC's Thunderstruck.

Instruments used are an accordian, spoons, an anvil (struck with a box wrench), a very basic drum set, a stand-up bass, a banjo, and a madolin-ukelele thing.

While I've been exposed to some cool new genres, I'd been longing for some decent indie/alternative music here south of the equator. Couple of great bands popped up - the now-defunct Legiao Urbana and the still-active Los Hermanos have filled the void. Huge influences from the Smiths, the Cure, etc, with serious Brazilian overtones. Cool stuff. Enjoy.

Another show I recently grabbed...

Ozzy - 7/6/84 from Tokyo

Nice soundboard recording.

Gotta find me a show or two with Randy...

Doug Seegers. Very bluesy, and not really country at all. I recommend people check it out. This guy was a homeless street musician in Nashville and through some fortunate events he wound up singing for record company people and ended up with a record deal.

Re: USCHO Music Thread 2: Rock On, Amigo.

New U2 Album (and tour) finally coming?

My kid has been bugging me about this and insists that I take him. He took my Joshua Tree tour poster from my tube of old posters and put it in his room.

I'm actually really looking forward to a new album and a chance to see them in person again. Last time I saw them was 1997.
