USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

Fair.

Clapton is ungodly overrated. I will tear out my own eardrums if I have to listen to "Wonderful Tonight" one more time.

As for the rest, you know what they say - never meet your heroes. I feel like that's probably all the more true for rockstars.
The Black Keys were doing some form of presenting/introducing Steve Miller for his induction into the Rock N Roll HoF. As I recall, ā€œHe was just a complete assā€ the entire time they were with him.

My favorite story involving the Black Keys is when Jack White commended them for being really good at making his music.

I really like Jack White, but he can certainly be a douche. At least his politics don’t get in the way. Plus there will always be this - Look out, man!

On the flip side…I’ve met Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth drummer), Kev’n Kinney (drivin’ and cryin’), Mates of State, Syl Sylvain, and the rhythm section for Fugazi (in their new band The Messthetics) and Jon Wurster (drums for Bob Mould, Mountain Goats and previously Superchunk) and they were all total sweethearts.

My old band opened for The White Stripes in about 1998 or 1999 at Cactus a club in Milwaukee. I didn’t interact with either Jack or Meg that night but can tell you this…Milwaukee was the first city The White Stripes ever played outside Michigan and Jack retains a soft spot for our town.

On at least 2 occasions Jack has donated serious money to some VERY important local causes (one for a woman’s medical
Bills and one to help Cactus Club complete City mandated renovations).

Is there a more depressing song, in retrospect, than Rush's New World Man? It was released in 1982 so it is about my cohort: 60s birth year, internationalist STEMmies.

He's a rebel and a runner
He's a signal turning green
He's a restless, young romantic
Wants to run the big machine
He's got a problem with his poisons
But you know he'll find a cure
He's cleaning up his systems
To keep his nature pure

[Pre-Chorus]
Learning to match the beat of the Old World Man
Learning to catch the heat of the Third World Man

[Chorus 1]
He's got to make his own mistakes
And learn to mend the mess he makes
He's old enough to know what's right
But young enough not to choose it
He's noble enough to win the world
But weak enough to lose it
He's a New World Man

[Verse 2]
He's a radio receiver
Tuned to factories and farms
He's a writer and a ranger
And a young boy bearing arms
He's got a problem with his power
With weapons on patrol
He's got to walk a fine line
And keep his self-control

[Pre-Chorus]
Trying to save the day for the Old World Man
Trying to pave the way for the Third World Man

[Chorus 2]
He's not concerned with yesterday
He knows constant change is here today
He's noble enough to know what's right
But weak enough not to choose it
He's wise enough to win the world
But fool enough to lose it
He's a New World Man

God, knowing what we know now...

Going to the AMC theater tomorrow night to watch a concert film of my favorite band, The Warning. Can't wait. I'll bet it will be more fun for me then the concert. Standing for 6 hours and being behind people who are taller than me, etc. at the Live Show was not very fun at my age.

The year was 1991
