USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

I've been searching for a show I want to see while I'm in MN and just found out a buddy of mine already bought us tickets to see Gang of Four at the Fine Line the 2nd night I'm home. I also discovered that Parliament Funkadelic is playing on the 22nd at The Uptown but I think I'm going to be in Lutsen or Grand Rapids.

One of my auto playlists has been on fire so far:

IDLES – When the Lights Come On
The Afghan Whigs – Parked Outside
Kaiser Chiefs – Modern Way
The Doors – Alabama Song
Jarvis Cocker – Angela
The Beatles – Golden Slumbers
The Church – Antenna
Johnny Winter – Be Careful with a Fool
Stars – Ageless Beauty
Radiohead – Karma Police
The Flaming Lips – Race for the Prize
*Nada Surf – Enjoy the Silence
David Bowie – Valentine’s Day
Chris Cornell – Seasons
Adia Victoria – Stuck in the South
John Lee Hooker – Boggie Chillin’
CSNY – Almost Cut My Hair

*I really love this version
Good video "The Crazy History Behind the Alabama Song" that is worth watching. Sorry I don't have the wits to link, Slap.

I really enjoy watching accomplished professional (but not necessarily ‘famous’) musicians talk music theory as well as break down songs, or genres, instruments, or other artists. In this case the legendary Leland Sklar talking bass along with Nicole Srow (Panic at the Disco) along with the two hosts. In this they breakdown Taxman as well as the brilliant Thundercat song Them Changes.

Digging into the Skin Yard back catalog today, a band I have long thought of as the textbook definition of what a lot of Sub Pop-era "grunge" sounded like before Nirvana and Pearl Jam blew up. I would perhaps briefly summarize them as, "If early Soundgarden had a less talented copycat singer." Take those same de-tuned Sabbath by-way-of the Butthole Surfers riffs from Screaming Life/Fopp and Ultramega OK, set them to some lunkhead lyrics, and there you have it. Which is unfortunate, because even though Jack Endino is better known as a grunge producer, he actually showed off some pretty good lead guitar skills in this band. They're most likely best known as a footnote in the early careers of multiple future drummers, including Soundgarden/Temple of the Dog/Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, Mother Love Bone's Greg Gilmore, POTUSA's Jason Finn, and Screaming Trees/Mad Season's Barrett Martin. The latter joined Skin Yard for their last two albums before they broke up in 1992, giving them the best rythym section they had during their run and resulting in their most "approachable" material (just like after he joined the Trees). Singer Ben McMillian went on to grunge-metal also rans Gruntruck with former drummer Scott McCullum, and bass player Daniel House retired from touring music to run seminal indie label C/Z Records full-time until it went bankrupt.
