USCHO Music: From Queen to The Beatles to Lady Gaga

This is an interesting cover of Fire and Ice for what it shows about Benatar's voice. This vocalist is great, and her voice is powerful and has the range, but even so she needs the guitar to come in and give body to her high tenuto notes. Now listen to Benatar again, and she blows away the guitar, even though it much more amplified, and less muddy.

tldr: B-tch could sing.

Not An Addict by K's Choice (Belgium) played randomly on a playlist today and I decided to check them out more when I got home. I know I bought their first album but the mid-90's was littered with good music and I probably wrote them off as a one-hit wonder without more attention given.

When I looked them up on Spotify the stock photo was of 2 men only and I thought the lead singer was fired or quit. Turns out Sarah Bettens became Sam Bettens as of 2019 and in comparing then to now the latest song is very good even 25-plus years into their existence.

Normally I have no real use for the so-called tribute bands out there but I recently saw Brit Floyd and damm, they are worth the $$$.

And on the same subject, Burton Cummings is so po'd at the current "Guess Who" that he terminated the rights agreements on most of his songs in order to stop them from being played. It's going to end up costing him $$$ but he hopes it will stop what he calls "the fake band" from playing those hits

Bought the new Pearl Jam LP “Dark Matter” yesterday along with Budgie’s “Bandolier” on vinyl.

I have to say PJ completely surprised me. Dark Matter is a great rock record! I’d argue it’s in their top 3 overall.

while I still favor Soundgarden, Nirvana and AIC over PJ generally, I do admire PJ’s energy and sincerity and with Matt Cameron on drums you can’t go wrong!

PJ is also my least favorite of those four. I put it on this morning and I enjoy parts of it. The title track could have been a late period Soundgarden song.

Wife was not a big fan - said it was too "easy listening" and they all sound like tired old men. :-D

I don’t give a shit about Taylor swift and will not be listening to her new album.

but find it sad that some publications have had to hide who wrote their review because the swifties threaten death and go after anyone who utters anything negative about their queen.

absolutely unhinged people

Dave Matthews Band is in the Rock HOF.

"Really? How I feel when I'm drunk is correct?"
"Yes. Except the Dave Matthews Band doesn't rock."

She penned a giant middle finger to those unhinged fans. It's a shame they're too obtuse to understand it and instead look like the meme from Always Sunny trying to connect lines that don't connect.

She was surprisingly candid throughout the album, which I guess will happen when the opening lines of the first track are:
I was supposed to be sent away
But they forgot to come and get me
I was a functioning alcoholic
'Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic

She also touches on millenial coping, masking, depression, and such. One song especially was written directly about the Eras Tour:
'Cause I'm a real tough kid, I can handle my sh*t
They said, baby, gotta fake it 'til you make it and I did
Lights, camera, b*tch smile, even when you wanna die
He said he'd love me all his life
But that life was too short
Breaking down, I hit the floor
All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting, "More"
I was grinning like I'm winning, I was hitting my marks
'Cause I can do it with a broken heart

That song in particular give some "Pumped Up Kicks" / "BlackHole Sun" / "Semi-Charmed Life" in that the depressing lyrics shouldn't be that much of a bop.

Overall it's a mid 6 to low 7 out of 10. It's done well, it's "safe" sounding but has zero party bangers that pop fans will want to add to their Spotify Playlist.

It is the closure for a lot of chapters in her life and IMO I could see her using it as a capstone and dipping out for a few years when the Eras Tour is over.

This reminds me of the Sub Pop documentary where the studio engineer strums a diabetes-inducing Beach Boys chord, then drops the middle note by a half-step and says "that's grunge."

From Hype, which is a great doc that holds up well in most aspects, except the prediction that there would be "some great rock n' roll coming down the line."

There was, in fact, not much great rock n' roll to come. Not much of national prominence, anyway.
