USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

I tried private label.. I'll try Jif, then I'll try Skippy. I just don't want "natural" peanut butter, because oil separation is a thing.
My favorite is grind it yourself honey nut from Whole Foods (not sure if you have one convenient).
I get skippy natural super chunk. Never really had separation issues.
Best PB I’ve found on the market when you balance cost, flavor, availability, and quality. Then again, I haven’t done an exhaustive search lol.
I’ve just found all of the “artisan” PBs I’ve tried are crap. Like Justin’s. Might be the most overrated food item I’ve ever bought.
Justin's is terrible. All of their products are. Even American's Test Kitchen agreed.

Lol! What did they say?
(Yes, I googled it. Couldn’t find anything.)
I'll have to rewatch the episode to get a direct quote, but they were tasting almond butters and it was basically, "they don't add anything to the butter to improve the taste or texture, so if you want that, great, but all of our tasters thought it was terrible compared with the other options which added salt" (and a few other ingredients). Also, Justin's doesn't remove the skin on the almonds leading to a weird texture. It was on the Ultimate Sticky Buns episode, which has been my favorite by far of the post-Christ Kimball era. The girls go nuts for the buns and devolve into downright munchies...it's fantastic.

Whole Foods in West Michigan? Hawwwwwww! :D

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if one popped up in Grand Rapids in the near future. I'm sure Bezos has his eye on expansion, with all the backing Amazon can now provide.

Smucker's Natural is really good, but a touch overpriced for PB (it's usually $3.5-4 for a 12? oz. jar - maybe 16 oz., but it's always seemed a bit smaller to me). I've actually taken a liking to the Trader Joe's brand. Chunky, of course, like everyone else who stopped riding training wheels ages ago. $2.29 and it's 16 oz.

Target sells a store brand natural PB, but I don't recall if it's a copy of the Skippy or Jif naturals. In fact, it's so close to one or the other that I can't tell the difference. I'm willing to bet that Target simply has a contract with them to make the store brand.

I ate at a Dutch restaurant yesterday and they served mayo with the fries. I got a good laugh out of that.

Mayo Update: 6-3-2018

We were served mayo with our fries in Belgium. Our host colleague says he loves to make homemade mayo. It goes great with fries.

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

I think quite a few people who say mayo sucks, have never had real mayo. The bland, industrialized goop that comes out of a jar here in America is fine as a base for a doctored up dressing or sauce, but is a poor substitute for the fresh, homemade stuff.

I've never tried Duke's, but everyone in the South swears by it. They say it's tangier. Supposedly, you'll never see a jar of Kraft or Hellmans' in a home kitchen down there.

I had mayo with fries when I was in The Netherlands several years ago, and agree that is nothing like the super market mayo we get here.

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

The only supermarket stuff I like is Hellman's. The best is definitely the homemade stuff, we have a pretty good recipe that we make with a couple egg yolks, mustard, seasonings, and drizzling olive oil in with our stick blender.

Please to list here. I need a great recipe because I can't abide any of the store bought stuff but I've had homemade at parties that has been out of this world.

Also: I have no idea what a stick blender is. It sounds like a paint stirrer.

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

If anyone wants a nice stick blender and is in the Twin Cities, my wife just dropped hers off at Goodwill in Blaine, MN because it was just taking up space and she used it only once in the last about 4 years.

I am on my second one. I LOVE mine. Use it for whipping cream, making smoothies, shakes, making salad dressings and marinades, and... and... and...

We've made this a bunch of times with various additions, but even the base mayo is delicious: Serious Eats
This is the stick/immersion blender I have: Cuisinart

Dear GOD!

I just had the best bacon I’ve ever had. Hilton La Defense in Paris.
