USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

Done baking cookies. Total just under 2,000 (the most I've done), given out to 21 different places (two hockey teams, 3 charitable organizations, and 16 family/friends). 26 different kinds, although I tossed out 2 things (nougat and some Andes cookies I threw together with leftover stuff). Most of the new types I tried were meh - good but not great.

New rule - no more cookies coated in powdered sugar. Too messy when packaging.

Pistachio wreaths were very pretty and festive, but I could probably offer a million dollars to anyone that receives one intact, and not have to pay out. Not sure they were a good idea to send.
The peppermint palmiers turned out, although I didn't think they were exceptionally tasty.
The nougat hardened too quickly (maybe my butter was too cold) and was inedible - solidified to the mixer bowl.

Kinds I made at Zingerman's - cocoa caramel snowballs, cardamom snowflake puffs (made with puff pastry - didn't keep well and broke easily, had to toss them), Viennese rum punch (amazing chocolate-raspberry rum filling), and pistachio cherry slices (more like quick bread, but really tasty).

Added Chocolate Cherry Pistachio pinwheels after the Zimsterne disaster.

Didn't do the eggnog mini cakes (no. more. baking), and didn't make the nuts and Nutella gifts yet. Also put together some speculaas dough for making later, since they were received very well at Thanksgiving. And because I am cookie-d out.

Jesus Christ.

Marry me?

Would Dr mrs have to say something about this?

Starting the journey of prepping for open house. Feel inadequate after looking at what jen has accomplished already. Keilbasa soup is made. Now on to multiple cookie doughs etc. Don't have a solid list yet.

I made about 30 cookies for coworkers yesterday. They were my famous dark chocolate cherry oatmeal cookies so I only got to eat one before they were gone.

Then Jen comes on here and says “I baked 2,000.” :-\

My gf and I made about 150 cookies last night. They were simple things, nothing intricate like Jen made. I'd rather not think of the pain of orchestrating something like that in my kitchen.

You don't even want to know what my kitchen has looked like for the past 2+ weeks. I tend not to do very complicated cookies, due to the overall time involved (it's rare for me to do cutouts, sandwich cookies, or anything frosted).

There's one place I donate where I can leave them on plates, so I bake prettier cookies for them. Otherwise, everything gets put in a bag or box and needs to withstand a little jostling. Lots of drop cookies or slice and bake.

I try to do mine earlier because I can't take a lot of time off in December, and I want to get them out before people get sick of holiday treats.

you'd be better off buying cookies ;)

I did better whenI was working (what I do now doesn't qualify as work when compared to before.

Made Roasted butternut squash, spinach and caramelized onion lasagne today. Says it takes 1 h 35 min. I call BS. It took alomst 4 hours. Arg. Still haven't baked a cookie,

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

Smoked sea salt. My goodness why didn't I discover this before?

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

I also made Confetti biscotti with Christmas snowflake sprinkles. This one was really good, and may repeat... although I have several good biscotti/mandelbrot recipes. And I should've put "Blizzard Biscotti" on the labels - much cuter.

Made chocolate treasures, jumbles and then the dough for sugar, lace, pepparakor, spritz and some chicken broth. Shockingly I can find my kitchen. Back at it tomorrow.

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

Was looking at Zingerman's Bake classes (as that might go on the Christmas list). Found the pizza class I think jen mentioned. They have one on Valentine's Day, I may have convinced the husband this will be a fun and different Valentine's date. We will come home with lots of pizza with both of us taking the class.

The one on Valentine's Day doesn't do Detroit pizza - that one was called Detroit Classics.

It took weeks for my Mom to do her batches of cookies also. Most of hers were cutouts, decorated, frosted or filled. it was a labor of love, everyone that knew us, and that was many with 4 boys and a Dad at UMaine came begging around this time of year. I don't think she got hers done this early. She did round shortbread with christmas trees on them. The trees were done with green food coloring and a toothpick. Now that I think about it its a wonder she ever got all those done as their were many dozens of just those, easily the crowd favorite. Like to see a picture of what you made, make everyone on here drool :)

THank you. Solved my problem for one of my cookies. I made almond cookies and was trying to figure out what I could do to make them look festive. The Christmas tree thing sounds interesting.
Hopefully this works...

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

Just made what might be my final batch of chili for a longtime since I have the elimination diet starting January. Love the ground bison, mix of peppers and lots of beans. I’m really gonna miss peppers and beans and really hope legumes and nightshades aren’t my issue

Nightshades are a real common issue

Re: USCHO Cooks: Maybe We Can Beat Bobby Flay

I have discovered the brand of molasses really matters :( bought store brand to make the pepparkakor and it was a disaster.
