US Open Tennis

Jason A

We'll be back. You'll see.
It's underway, with no shockers on day one. Venus Williams almost lost last night but escaped.

The consensus on the men's side is that if Federer doesn't win then it's probably Murray or Roddick.

Re: US Open Tennis

Pretty good match right now between murray and gulbis. Most people were probably in bed but they had agassi in the booth last night and his commentary was brilliant, as good as i've ever heard when it comes to tennis. I'm predicting Nadal goes out tomorrow.

Re: US Open Tennis

Gasquet can be tough, but I'm not sure why he waited to come back at the US Open (he was serving a suspension for testing positive for cocaine). He could have played in Montreal or Cincinnati, or even in New Haven last week. He looks very rusty.

Re: US Open Tennis

Jesse Witten might be an American player to watch at this tournament. He made it through the qualifiers and then upset 29 seed Igor Andreev in the first round. He gets #58 Maximo Gonzalez in the second round, and then Djokovic in the third round if he wins.

A pretty disappointing tournament for all the young Midwest section kids. Chase Buchanan got destroyed by Tsonga. Brendan Evans lost in straight sets. Rajeev Ram lost in four sets. Timmy Smyczek didn't make it out of qualifying. Donald Young probably had the best tournament, winning three matches in the qualifier and then taking a set off Tommy Robredo.

Re: US Open Tennis

Witten looks like a short linebacker, maybe a nose tackle for a high school football team. Gonzalez took the first set but just double-faulted three times to hand Witten an early break in the second, and is now in the middle of what feels like a 10-minute bathroom break.

Re: US Open Tennis

Have had trouble getting into the Open as quickly as I did Wimbledon. Maybe this weekend will get me more involved.

I would like to see Roddick win, 2nd choice Murray. New blood.
How about the 17 year old from Georgia--Melanie Uidon(sp)?

She's for real. She made a strong run at Wimbledon too.

Witten ended up winning and is somehow in the third round of a GS.

Witten just served for a two sets to one lead but was broken, then lost the tiebreak 7-2. He is playing very well, though.

Re: US Open Tennis

There was a pretty cool moment on the Grandstand on Friday night when Taylor Dent won a tough five set match. I hadn't heard anything about Dent in forever, and just kind of assumed his fatness and laziness caught up with him and he flamed out of tennis, but apparently he had a couple back surgeries and really re-dedicated himself to the sport, and now he's in the third round. He'll probably get smoked by Murray tomorrow though.

Witten's run ended today. He actually stole the first set from Djokovic, but then lost the next three.

Re: US Open Tennis

Oudin, the 17 year old, may not be ready for the finals, but she stood her ground and won the set. Sharapova did not look sharp--what 20 double faults:eek:

Re: US Open Tennis

This second set between Zvonareva and Pennetta has been an absolute war.

Re: US Open Tennis

Pennetta saved seven match points, overcame a bad ruling by the chair, and forced a third set. This is going to be exciting.

Too bad its relegated to the Tennis Channel.

Edit: Zvonareva is off her nut. I see a retirement on the horizon with Pannetta leading 2-0, but it will be an entertaining retirement.

Edit: 6-0 Pannetta in the third. I wonder if Zvonareva paid for the stamp she used to mail that one in with rubles or dollars?

Yeah, what's with that? I watched the Hewitt/Federer match yesterday on HD (NBC, I believe). But the Tennis channel? Horrid to see. It's almost blurry. Not that I'm a big tennis guy, but I expect something better than community channel video, especially if it's on a channel dedicated to the sport.

Re: US Open Tennis

Not that gambling is legal, but how the hell is Melanie Oudin favored against Petrova?

Petrova isn't going to double fault 22 times.

That's where the money is going. It's not that she's really favored, it is just that more people are betting on her, so the sportsbooks want an equal amount of money to come in on the other side, and they adjust the line.

Line's at -115 for both now.
