US Open 2011

Re: US Open 2011

Very interesting match here because it's kind of a year-defining match for both players. If Woz loses, she's a great compiler that plays a lot of tourneys and gets the number 1 ranking, but can't counterpunch her way to a major victory when the best bring their best. If Kuznetsova loses, she's kind of got Monfils syndrome where she's got all the tools, but winds up in these marathon matches and never ends up going as far as she could.

Re: US Open 2011

And Caroline is yummy.

Rory is a lucky guy.

4-1, Woz up two breaks, 6 points from the match.

Edit: 5-1

Edit2: 3 match points for Wozniacki, but hasn't clinched yet.
The match is now 3 hours old

That first set, Kuznetsova tried to basically forfeit the match, and Caroline couldn't take advantage. And now, it's Caroline's show.

Re: US Open 2011

Wozniacki finally wins it on match point #5

She was down 4-1 in the second set then won 11 of 13 games. Great performance.

It's just starting to drizzle in Queens, but they're going to start the match and hope the rain stays away.

Caroline did the interview on ESPN. Have I mentioned lately that Rory is a lucky guy?

Re: US Open 2011

Roger wins the first set in 19 minutes, and 3 of those were commercial breaks.

Re: US Open 2011

Roger serves 4 aces in a row to take a 2-0 lead in the second. That game took all of 51 seconds.

Re: US Open 2011

Made my first ever trip to the Open last night. Observations:

- That thing is corporate-sponsored out the wazoo. There are logos EVERYWHERE!
- One benefit to that: free radios courtesy of American Express tuned to match commentary.
- The outdoor "concourse" area is a massive cluster**** when crowded.
- Food is expensive, drinks aren't too bad.
- Federer is still pretty darn good. After it took Wozniacki over three hours to beat Kuznetsova in three sets, Fed went up two sets on Monaco in like 35 minutes. At that point we headed for the subway because it was already like 12:45am, and when I checked the score when we got to the train he was already up 4-0 in the third set.

Those are free??? I always thought they charged for those, so I never got them! :)

Just in: Today and tonight have both been cancelled. I haven't seen the Wednesday schedule yet, but this could get a bit crazy if rain continues tomorrow.

If anything, they'll do an 11 a.m start to get matches in.

Re: US Open 2011

As soon as the prima donna is ready, tennis will begin.

Re: US Open 2011

And the prima donna is already down a break, 0-3. A-Rod is up a break. Wish DirecTV would bring back the multiple channels for today...hard to keep track of three matches at once.

Edit: And now the Isner match will go to Court 17 at 1:30. All 3 American men remaining will be in action simultaneously.

Edit2: That didn't last long. The rain has returned.

I'm not sure what they're going to do, it's going to be like this all week.

Re: US Open 2011

Nadal and Murray asked to meet with the tournament referee and Murray asked Roddick to join them. The players said they felt they were rushed onto the courts, there was standing water on the outer court and the balls got waterlogged. The courts were unplayable. Nadal says he thinks they were just trotted out to please the fans and the USTA knew they were going to have to suspend play rather quickly. Serena just tweeted her support of Rafa on this issue. The McEnroe brothers and Brad Gilbert just gave a fascinating look behind the scenes of the tennis world. I must admit, I never realized how little power the tennis pros have. Technically, the tournament referee didn't even have to listen to anything Nadal or anyone else said.

As for the weather, tournament officials hope to begin play at 4PM. We'll see.

Re: US Open 2011

I think most players have been in a position where they've had to go on court not 100% confident in the court conditions. I don't mind the players saying something.

But Nadal did sound like a tool. I'm sure it was all about the money for the USTA, what with the 300 hundred people they had watching a Round of 16 match. They've got a tournament to get through, and I can't blame them for wanting to get the players out on the court and get what they could in, and not having a ton of patience for Nadal's bionic man act with his seven rolls of tape. If Nadal sticks around long enough--which I doubt he will--he would benefit anyway since he wouldn't have to play four full matches in four days.
