US Open 2011

Re: US Open 2011

All men's matches have been pushed to tomorrow. Ugh.

Worth noting that Roddick's only Grand Slam victory (2003 USO) came during almost this exact same scenario. They got rain Monday-Wednesday that year and only played 1-2 matches over the course of three days, IIRC. He has grabbed an early lead against Ferrer . . .

Re: US Open 2011

I think most players have been in a position where they've had to go on court not 100% confident in the court conditions. I don't mind the players saying something.

But Nadal did sound like a tool. I'm sure it was all about the money for the USTA, what with the 300 hundred people they had watching a Round of 16 match. They've got a tournament to get through, and I can't blame them for wanting to get the players out on the court and get what they could in, and not having a ton of patience for Nadal's bionic man act with his seven rolls of tape. If Nadal sticks around long enough--which I doubt he will--he would benefit anyway since he wouldn't have to play four full matches in four days.

It's not just the people in the stands, it's the four letter network that needs programming. No doubt the USTA felt pressure (real or feared) from the bean counters in Bristol who shelled out big bucks for this tournament. The folks at the Mothership aren't that thrilled to be stuck showing matches from Monday. How much are Sunday finals worth to the USTA, ESPN and the tournament sponsors vs a Monday (or Tuesday) final?

Rafa is a prima donna and lots of what he does rubs me the wrong way, but tennis players need a voice - right now they don't have one. They may very well have played in dangerous conditions before, because that's what the tournament told them to do and the players pretty much have to do whatever they are told. If you heard the little history lesson McEnroe gave after the meeting you know that things used to be much worse, but they still aren't that great.

Of course, I know from other threads here in the Cafe just how popular unions are around these parts. It's much better when the employee - whether it's some schmuck making $8.00/hour or a professional athlete making millions - just does whatever the boss tells him to do.

Re: US Open 2011

The sun is shining in Queens. Play begins momentarily.

Re: US Open 2011

Roddick/Ferrer (US standardbearer for last decade vs. No. 5 player in the world) going to court 13 to play for a quarterfinal berth. How many seats does that court have?

Re: US Open 2011

Young is out to Murray. Muller is about to be ousted by Nadal.

Everyone that was in Armstrong could have brought their 10 closest friends with them over to 13 and they would have had room for them all.

Watching the replay right now and got a laugh out of the guy seated directly behind Brooklyn with the "Internet is for porn" T-shirt. Musical theater fan or devoted pornography-lover? :)

So Isner-Murray up at noon today, followed by Roddick-Nadal.

Re: US Open 2011

Isner played a very good first set but was broken at 5-5 and lost 7-5. Murray broke him at love to open the second set.

Are the two mutually exclusive :p

Time for some Avenue Q on the iPod to finish out my workday...

Re: US Open 2011

Nadal came out like a house afire and Rooddick was never in this. He isn't at 100% either.

Isner really hung in there and fought and then played a horrid fourth-set tiebreaker.

In both cases, the better player won. There's a large gap between the top four and everyone else on tour.

Re: US Open 2011

Isner played a pretty nice match, but he was running on borrowed time having to win every set in a tiebreak. Even as great as he is in the tiebreak, it was only a matter of time before the odds caught up to him. Give credit to Murray for playing a rock solid match.

Roddick just got destroyed. I was hoping he could continue playing the way he had been, but there was nothing left in the tank.

Re: US Open 2011

Can't see Murray making it to the final. Nadal wins.
Federer-Djokovich has the possibility of being a classic. The old veteran vs the new #1.
Either the classic 5 set close match or Djokovich dominates. Can't decide.

Re: US Open 2011

Can someone explain to me why tennis sets up grand slams so 1 plays 3 and 2 plays 4 in the semis?

Nope. I also can't explain why the women play the semis tonight and finals tomorrow, while the men play their semis now but do not play the finals until Monday.

Obviously the prime time matchup is to put Wozniacki's breasts on display for a larger audience. :D

Unfortunately, they are counterbalanced by having to see the manbeast Serena on the opposite side of the court. :p
