US Open 2011

Re: US Open 2011

Can't see Murray making it to the final. Nadal wins.
Federer-Djokovich has the possibility of being a classic. The old veteran vs the new #1.
Either the classic 5 set close match or Djokovich dominates. Can't decide.
Looks like a classic matchup==Federer wins 1st set in tiebreak

Can someone explain to me why tennis sets up grand slams so 1 plays 3 and 2 plays 4 in the semis?
One side of ladder has odd numbered seeds; the other evens. Hoping for #1 vs #2 for final

It's random. There are buckets:

1 and 2 are placed in opposite halves
3 and 4 randomly get placed as semifinal opponents for #1 and #2
5-8 are quarterfinal opponents for 1-4
9-16 are round-of-16 opponents for 1-8
17-24 are round-of-32 opponents for 9-16
25-32 are round-of-32 opponents for 1-8

I think that's right . . .

Re: US Open 2011

Imagine the meltdown that would occur on this board in March if the pairwise seeded things that way. :D

They practically do, with the committee's ability to reassign teams based on geographical and attendance concerns. Technically, there are no seeds, just bands.

Shhhhhh, the seeds are ironclad and it's all a conspiracy to screw over [insert Western school name here] to placate the fans of [Hockey East/ECACHL team names here].
:p

Well, I had 1 and 2 right:o

1 and 28 playing in women's semis

sounds like buckets=bands:confused:

Re: US Open 2011

The crowd got behind Roger and gave him an almost unanimous standing ovation as he arrived at double match point at 5-3. Djokovich won the next point and raised his hands to try to pump up his supporters. Then he won the next point, then the game, then broke Federer again and just won the 5th set 7-5.

Re: US Open 2011

The Wozniacki-Williams semi will not get underway until close to 10PM. That means it will finish between 1130 and midnight (or later). And the final is at 4PM tomorrow? That's incredibly unfair considering Wozniacki is the #1 seed here and#1 ranked in the world. Whoever wins this match will be gassed for the final. TPTB really ought to move the women's final to Monday as well.

CBS is passing time until that match by replaying coverage of the Djokovich-Federer match. I looked up last year's US Open results and the exact same thing happened, except Federer had two match points on Djokovich's serve, then collapsed as Novak won 7-5 in the 5th set in the semis.

Re: US Open 2011

Serena is up 2 breaks at 5-1 in the 1st but is now wearing a wrap under her shoe because of a bum foot. We'll see if she can win seven games before Wozniacki wins 12.

Edit: And the rally begins. Caroline breaks Serena's serve.

Edit2: And Serena breaks right back. Wozniacki has been broken three service games in a row and Serena leads 19-0 on winners. Looks like Serena vs Samantha Stosur for the US Open final tomorrow at 4PM.

"It's just always something," said Williams' mother, Oracene Price. "And it seems to happen to us."

If Serena would just keep her trap shut, maybe it wouldn't happen to her.

Yes, that's right.

On the women's side, the top-half semifinal matchup would have been (1) Wozniaki vs. (4) Azarenka, but (28) Williams knocked out Azarenka in the round of 32 and kept winning.

Djokovic is a great player but he has very thin skin and has a hard time accepting it when the crowd roots against him. That forehand at 40-15 was sort of like a defiant eff you to the crowd. Maybe he'll embrace being the bad guy, as Lendl learned to do over time.

Re: US Open 2011

Djokovich is up 2 sets on Nadal in the final.

Yep. Appears Nadal's run is over already and Djokovich is going to be the man for a while. Nadal probably will still win the French but unless something changes I don't see him knocking off Djokovich any time soon.

Seems awfully soon to say that IMO. They're basically the same age and even if you assume that Djokovic will hold his big lead today, Nadal still has won more than he's lost head-to-head. 2011 has been Djokovic's year, sure, but writing off a guy as talented as Nadal (who's won four majors the last two years and been in the finals of two more) is silly.

Re: US Open 2011

Nadal broken, then breaks right back. Now on serve at 4-3 in the 3rd. Novak 12 points from the match.

Alex Morgan of the USWNT is about 5 rows behind where Nadal is standing right now.

Re: US Open 2011

Nadal looks like he's trying everything he can and Djokovic looks like he's coasting.

EDIT: There are some sick points being played.

EDIT 2: Medical Timouts are stupid.

EDIT 3: and that timeout has changed everything.

EDIT 4: Medical Timeout wins the match. Sad.
