US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

So, the (first, I think) US goal where the shooter waited and waited moving to Sabados' left until Szabados committed and then released just as the door was about to close...I thought was J-Lam but reading some of the posts here leads me to believe it was M-Lam. So which one was it?

And nice ceremony before the game for the Lams.

Also noticed that Duggan was unusually aggressive last night. She was chirping quite a bit at Irwin who I think was pushing all the right buttons. She was also quite physically aggressive through the game (not that that's a negative...just an observation).

I think it's a case of two teams playing each other too many times with too little at stake all in preparation for extremely high stakes. I understand why they schedule these games, both in terms of selling tickets and in terms of getting ready for the Olympics. However, I think it might be better if they didn't do it and were meeting fresh in Sochi.

Good point. Or as I mentioned in the Sochi thread, another two consistently competitive teams with these two would serve as great tune up competitors (all four for each other) and with the added variety it would probably dramatically reduce, if not, eliminate the problem you mentioned.
Then again, that was easy enough to say but the big potential logistics problem then would be travel expenses.

I don't see the down side in these 2 teams playing this much..IMHO it is creating quite an interest in these 2 teams.

Yes. For the foreseeable women's Olympic hockey future, no games between these two after mid-November, say, and then a two-out-of-three series for the gold. (Just dreamin . . .)

There's certainly a high degree of interest in these two teams but my point was just that the bad blood between the two probably wouldn't be as bad if it was thinned out with regular competition from two more equally competitive teams.

Assuming that that is correct then, I guess, the argument would be whether or not the general public's interest level was still as high and if it wasn't then you wrestle with the dilemma of "giving the customer what he wants" as much marketing wisdom would advise in order to grow your market or you "**** the torpedoes" and continue down your chosen path because part of that goal was to provide somewhat of an alternative to the product (men's hockey with the fighting) that is already available to the public.

So, ultimately, it seems to me, that the dilemma is as Hux was pointing out earlier...do you welcome more interest in the game for the "wrong" reason or do you try to eliminate that reason and with it, quite likely, the added interest that was attracted to the game because of it?

Re: US National Teams: U30s & Mrs. Potter, U22s, U18s Part II

Small chance anyone drawn to the sport or coerced to watch due to the melee(s) and associated publicity morph into long term fans...would be my speculation. Expect the vast majority of those not previously fans of the game that tune in merely because of the fights and only watching per hopes of seeing more of the same would just be disappointed in the absence of donnybrook repeats thus not converted to true, long term fans.

If there be current fans of the game who want to see more rows and the plays that often precipitate them for it's potential of calling attention to the sport, I'm not among them.

I understand it's going to happen once in awhile. Also understand the broadcast media will jump on it in hopes of viewers and ratings. Just not what the sport should be promoted by.

Say a bunch more, new fans tune into Olympic women's ice hockey due to the scuffles and related publicity. Are they likely to stick around or return in the future if they aren't treated to repeats? I'm not real optimistic. Will / would it increase the fan base among Canadians? How was attendance in 2010? It's probably the typical US sports fan I'm channeling here with my belief that publicity of this nature would not produce a long term expansion of the dedicated fan base.

I saw on the USA Hockey website that the U-18 selection camp/winter festival begins this week on December 26 in Blaine, MN. Any thoughts out there as to what the team will look like heading to Hungary in March?

According to the USA Hockey site the festival begins on the 27th, not the 26th: http://u18womensworlds.usahockey.com/news_article/show/318758?referrer_id=804107

Curious because at least six of these girls from Minnesota would otherwise be involved in very competitive high school Holiday Tournaments that begin on the 26th. Would they play with their high school team for that one day, or would they be wise to rest up so they're at their best for the Festival?

more proof that the Church "resignation" was a ruse. The truth is that they were worried that the team was peaking too early. You don't want that and can't have your players hold back.

solution?

change coaches to create disarray and lose a few games

team will be eager for redemption in Sochi

don't believe it? I suppose you believe Team USA actually was "trampling on the Canadian flag" before the gold medal game and Oswald didn't shoot Kennedy

So Canada cuts speed and youth, preferring to rely on age and experience, the most senior of whom has not been game ready consistently for a while. Let's see how that works out.

I'm not complaining, since I add Blue to my red and white, but with the success the USA has had even missing arguably an impactful forward, while TC has had Wick and Poulin on the DL. Will they be that much of a game changer should they get / remain healthy? There's not a lot of time to work with if you're talking about reintegrating two players into a line up and under a new head coach.

There is a lot of discussion about this very subject on the Ontario board. It is a bit slanted as most posters on that board are parents of Bantam, Midget and College aged players.
