US Junior Team Part II

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Crazy, crazy TV ratings for the game in Canada:

From TSN

"It was an epic game with an epic audience to match. Tuesday night's thrilling IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game made television history for TSN.

Preliminary overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that TSN's average audience for the game was an outstanding 5.3 million viewers - an all-time record for the network and the largest audience recorded on Canadian television since 2005*. It is the sixth largest audience for any broadcast on Canadian television in records that date back to 1994.

An astounding 12.3 million viewers - or more than one in three Canadians - tuned in to some of or the entire broadcast."

That is incredible, folks.

That's about 6 times the audience for the NCAA title game on ESPN.

Especially when the population of Canada is 33,900,000. Almost have of their country watched the game. Incredible.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

One of my friends in the Albany NY area has it with Time Warner Cable.

Bull****. There may have been a program that was carried by one of the US sports networks that was fed the TSN feed, but to say that TSN is carried by Time Warner Cable in Albany is 100% INCORRECT.

This. I live right on the border and I don't get it with TW. I think NHL network may have been simulcasting TSN's feed, as they were most of the tournament.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

It can't be 'amature' if the kids in the major juniors are compensated, otherwise they could play major juniors, THEN attend and play at an American college. I think that's what the word amateur means (Dictionary.com: am⋅a⋅teur  /ˈæməˌtʃʊər, -tʃər, -tər, ˌæməˈtɜr/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [am-uh-choor, -cher, -ter, am-uh-tur] an athlete who has never competed for payment or for a monetary prize.)

You do realize that the only reason Major Junior players are deemed inelligible is because they may play with those of have signed a NHL contract. Compensation has little to do with it as they only earn stipends from their teams, as do many Tier II Junior A players.

This is considered an amature tournament, despite having a few "pros" in it like a Carlson.

The NHL network used TSN camera feeds and crew, but the USA game announcers and reporters were American (Dave Starman, JP DellaCamera and Fred Pletsch), and the broadcast was packaged by USA Hockey in the USA. Canadian TSN viewers saw their usual excellent announcing crew of Gord Miller, Pierre McGuire and Bob McKenzie.

This isn't the exact post to quote, but I'm somewhat lazy to look back and this one is related.

When I was living in Wash State right around Seattle, we got TSN in the cable package. I used to watch Sunday afternoon professional curling!

For example, Cam Fowler's "stipend" from Windsor was only $500,000 dollars.

Re: US Junior Team Part II

Almost all of the Europeans play for a professional team in their respective countries. Even so, who gives a crap what this tournament is classified as?

Re: US Junior Team Part II

IDK much about Major Juniors but is there any way that at the end of the season having the Memorial Cup winner compete against the NCAA champion? Would it be close or would the Memorial Cup winner blow even the national champion out of the water?

This has been discussed on this board IIRC.

I think the NCAA and Hockey Canada are both too politically shallow to every discuss such a game.

As for who would win... I think it would be a great game and I wouldn't be able to say for sure.

The best MJ teams are really really good, just like the best NCAA programs.

It would definitely be an entertaining game.

I'd also like to see exhibition games between MJ teams and NCAA teams. Instead of bringing in the CIS teams (filled with truly 25 year old Canadians), bring in teams like the London Knights, Red Deer Rebels, Moncton Wildcats, Halifax Mooseheads, Val de 'Ors, Rimouski, etc.

It won't happen, but it would be cool to see.

Yes, Pietrangelo has 17 games with STL over the past 2 seasons including 9 this year.

I'll take the TSN crew any day of the week. Yeah, Starman was a college hockey guy and McGuire has his own issues with bias, but after the US won, they simply let the whole thing go. They just started rambling on and on and didn't pay attention to what was going on with the awards ceremony. I mean, isn't that part of the tradition? Shouldn't we know what was going on on the ice? How hard would it have been to simply turn the mic over to the announcer in the arena? It was a serious case of diarrhea of the mouth. I also liked the fact that they had no problem taking players out of the awards ceremony (well, only US players anyways) to talk to them. I guess they enjoy perpetuating the whole "Super Bowl of Canada" nonsense.

Tough decision though.... American homers that aren't very good at it as a team or Canadian homers with bias up the yingyang.

In a one game playoff, anything could happen. A Memorial Cup team usually has about 5-8 drafted players, a NCAA Champ usually has 10-15 and sometimes more. But in a seven game series, the NCAA team would likely win because the college players are older, bigger and stronger.

Who wants a good laugh?

Rhetorical question, everyone wants a good laugh.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Some disingenuous folks have tried to downplay the US' victory by bring up the fact that Canada lost one of their best d-men in the Swiss semi-final, and that they really didn't send their best team to the event... considering guys like Kane, Del Zotto and about six others in the NHL would have been eligible had they not gone to the NHL.

I guess Team USA will just have to put an asterisk on their gold medals. :D

The USA team was in the same boat though...they didn't have Moore on the team.
