US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

I can't believe I'm saying this, but CNN so far is doing a fantastic job. They've got a bunch of contacts on the scene and they're not doing their usual hairdo / pundit crap. Wolf is nowhere to be scene.

I thought Wolf was on earlier, but maybe I mis-identified the voice.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

The US has come out in favor of the government. :-/

It is standing US policy to not officially support a coup d'etat that overturns a democracy (even when we're the ones behind it :p ).

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Tldr:

The lower ranking parts of the military have arrested the top generals who were Erdogan surrogates. They are trying to take control of government now.

The Turkish military is charged with protecting the secular original message of the founder. They have staged coups once every 20-30 years to remove a government they deem too religious.

Based on this, and what I've heard on CNN about the government drifting towards more Islamic tendencies, it seems like the military might be the better choice, but ****, they're shooting people on the streets, and I'm sure we don't have close to enough info.

Right now there's a bimbo at the main desk and a hairdo named Mike Rogers (a Congressman). They broke away from live coverage to give their personalities air time to speculate, which is exactly why CNN sucks.

Now they have their pet military pundits on, so they've turned it to nice, safe, vacuous entertainment in record time.

Time to try MSNBC.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Sounds like the metropolitan cities are supporting the military and the rural areas less so.

There are pro-government rallies going on.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Just sent my dad an email asking him if 2016 feels like He world's 1968.

I'd be in some long-form responses from those who lived through 1968.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

CCTV (PRC via Canada) also has hairdos and bimbos.

Makes sense. Secularists in the cities, fundies in the sticks. Tale as old as time.

Hopefully its not like 1914.

Given Turkey's strategic location, and Russian implications...that makes me very nervous.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

CCTV reports Erdogan has fled and is seeking asylum, but their reporters think the government may actually be winning in which case he won't want to leave the country. The EU was apparently meeting in Slovakia on Turkey by coincidence, and they're all shut up like clams. They're kinda screwed either way.

RT's blowing their chance stuck in programming and not breaking in live. It's a studio "news" network like Fox so they may not even have the personnel to do real reporting.

France24 finally has their act together. They seem to have the most detailed reporting (for example saying Erdogan's Chief of Staff has been detained, and that it is NOT a "Colonel's Coup -- most of the generals are in on it), but who knows whether those are solid leads or guesses?

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Reddit was saying that the generals were not in on it because Erdogan had removed the secular generals and replaced them with his own surrogates.

Holy shot. We're going to watch the military kill people on live TV

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

Is this a Turkish burning of the Reichstag? He's going to have whatever power he wants now

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

No clue. We'll need to see where things lie when the dust settles over the next week or two.
