It sounds like this isn't going well for the military. This isn't good.

This is a large-scale (reverse) Syria unfolding.

Reports that a fighter shot down a helicopter -- both craft were Turkish air force. So there are military assets on both sides. The 2 national TV networks are also divided between the sides.

Erdogan 86ed the general staff a few months ago and replaced them with his own guys, so this may simply be the two factions sorting out their, uh, severance.

At the end of a coup, colonels get shot. Generals and politicians on the losing side get out with a golden parachute.

Turkish poli sci prof in Istanbul on BBC (reporting from a phone) talking as if the coup has already failed.

Re: US Foreign Policy: The Wogs Begin at Calais

CNN reporting that their offices (CNN Turk) have been taken over. They aren't sure how long the pictures will keep coming.

Erdogan was already treating as terrorists journalists and others who had any connection whatsoever (e.g. published articles critical of his government's role with IS or the Kurds) to terrorist groups or acts. If he gets through this, heads will roll.

He has to be careful, though. Ataturk was the George Washington of post Ottoman Turkey, and he did many things to ensure a secular government. Erdogan was moving away from that in large strides and suppressing free speech in order to do it.

I'll tell you one thing, though. There are some dudes in the Turkish military who have some serious stones.

Erdogan is on the ground back in Turkey.
Coup participants are being arrested.
