Unrest in Egypt

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Anti-Mubarak protesters take those three vehicles now. Pro-Mubarak forces have taken up positions on the roof tops and are throwing rocks and furniture 100 feet down onto the crowd. The large insurance company building off the square is on fire. There is tear gas in the crowd, not sure from whom.

Wait, what? Al-Jazeera is getting lazy if they've resorted to airing footage of East Lansing.

Oddly, all the people on those rooftops look like 15-25 year old males. It looks like a College Park dorm, but browner.

The UN Sec General suggests that the violence is being orchestrated by Mubarak to demonstrate to the west that he's a bulwark against instability.

Gee. Ya think?
yeah, I dont think that's going to turn out well for Mubarak. He's only going to be able to call out the shock troops so much, and this is just going to make the protestors dig their heels in deeper. He just left them alone to peacefully protest, AJE sooner or later would get bored with the protest, along with the protestors themselves.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

The longer this goes...the more danger the situation represents. People will get tired, hungry, angry and things could spiral downhill.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Saudis: OK, when only people were getting hurt that was one thing. But this is serious.

Syrians: see you on the streets Friday? Maybe not so much:

The main Syrian protest page on Facebook is urging people to protest in Damascus on Feb. 4 and 5 for “a day of rage.” It says the goal is to “end the state of emergency in Syria and end corruption.” The number of people who have joined Facebook and Twitter pages calling for protests on Friday and Saturday is still relatively small, and some are believed to live outside the country.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

It's oscillating back and forth. In all the disaster scenarios, once you tip into violence people start acting like animals and everything descends into chaos. What we've seen a few times today is the start of a potentially nasty situation being defused by a few people with level heads. For example, we just saw a man surrounded by about 8 other men, obviously animated and likely very angry, some of whom seemed to be trying to strike him. Two men in the circle confronted the violent ones and either talked them down or drove them away. So what could have been a lynching was brought back under control by members of the same crowd. Not at all what we would expect. It could be the membership of these crowds is more rational than the typical man in the street, or it could be we aren't quite as as doomed a species as it sometimes seems.

The one thing I keep thinking is it helps a lot that these people aren't drinking.

Twitter
Any doctors close to Al Tahrir square, please step in if willing to save our young men and women.
former prisons ministr namd interior minister prisoners escape #mubarak thugs attack democracy NO coincidence
plz spread! pics of the assualt on protesters carried on by "pro mubarak" thugs #25jan #egypt http://bit.ly/gRM8jo
This is precisely why Mubarak can't be trusted to stay another day, let alone the rest of his "term"
A report from AFP says that at least 500 people have been injured in today's clashes according to a medic in Cairo.

People linking arms, in rows 3-4 thick, have secured all but one of the entrances to Tahrir Square. They're getting charged by thugs

State TV just announced that they are going to "clear the square"
That doesn't sound good.

Edit:
LPC with Egyptian Journalist Jano Charbel confirming army firing to disperse 'thugs'

The Violent Struggle for Cairo's Tahrir Square: An Eyewitness Account

The battle with Mubarak is no longer political, it is now a battle in defense of civilization
At Kasr El Nile bridge, we have taken complete control Gaza style with just rocks against gun fire
When protesters capture thugs who r KILLING them, they protect them from being beaten all the way till they hand them to the military
State TV showing urgent banner warning everyone in Tahrir square to evacuate immediately.

Edit:
#Mubarak thugs targeted journalists, to keep us from covering his crackdown. Hmph. Makes us all the more determined.
Al-Arabiya TV reporting that one of their correspondents went missing after being attacked by pro-Mubarak "protesters"
Overheard army officer off Tahrir square. They have no strategy to deal with situation. they are watching passively.

Re: Unrest in Egypt

Who the hell still attacks people on camels?

If everybody else is on foot, a camel is probably pretty daunting.

When the people revolt against the Saudis, the police will attack them with Ferrari 599 GTB Fioranos.

And then there's this:

Police are coming to confiscate journalists' cameras at Semiramis, says journo friend in downtown Cairo.

Tienanmen 2.
