University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

I really don't wanna be this guy, but what the hell was Eids doing coming out to play that puck....

All the guys let their guards down on this one, though. Disappointing.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Feels like a loss after the meltdown at the end of the 2nd and the 4-goal lead, but we move on.

Go Sioux, beat UAF tomorrow (today)!

It definitely feels like a loss. A lot of mistakes, especially with the d-corps which I expected to be one of the best in the country. Saying that, it WAS the first game of the year in Alaska, not necessarily the place where we play our best hockey.

We jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the 2nd, and looked very impressive in doing so. Then we lost a little (or a lot) mental focus, and let that lead slip. Turning point was the shorthanded goal towards the end of the 2nd right after we killed off an extended 5x3 powerplay and had our own PP chance. The first 1/3 to 1/2 of the third period we were lucky to keep it tied, and started to play better in the final 5 minutes but weren't able to make anything out of it. Eidsness made some big saves, including a monster in OT that at least allowed the Sioux to salvage a tie.

Overall, disappointing, but it IS the first game of the year. I'll feel much better if we can come out and destroy UAF tomorrow. Saying that, our opponent tomorrow is significantly better than who we struggled with this evening.

Wow. Even for a team that was known to blow a lead or two (IIRC), that's astounding. Not trying to rag; I'm honestly shocked.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

You're not wrong, but OTOH UAA absolutely buried their chances tonight.

4 goals. 4. That's a complete meltdown. I would think tomorrow's game should theoretically show what type of team this year's squad is. Will they beat UA_ like Ike beat Tina? Or will they rub the lotion on the skin?

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

The turning point was Shiyak calling a TO. The game kinda changed after that...;)

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Eids had his head up his arse playing that puck. The team turned it on last year when he quit playing the puck and let the game come to him, he needs to remember that. Part of me is really ticked that they blew the lead like they did, part of me is hoping this serves as a valuable teaching moment moving forward. The #2 team in the nation shouldn't let that happen, especially with a veteran d-c
orps and goalie...first game of the season or not.

Actually, they had a ton of chances to score and didn't. But yes, they came through in a team effort, big time. It was a great game with a great atmosphere.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

I don't think I've heard Hak as angry as he sounded with Tim on the radio last night after the game. You could hear the steam coming through my speakers.

Tim made some comment about it being the first game, moving on to tomorrow night, or some such thing, and Hak said no way. He was not going to let this slide. That he had sensed this laziness coming in the Manitoba game, and early in the UAA game. The team is going to pay for that laziness.

I would not want to be them this week, unless they smoke Alaska by about 10 and allow zero shots on goal. :D

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Happy's comment still applies in that case though, doesn't it? The Gophers have barely sniffed a lead this year, much less a big lead.

We were beating SD, USC, and NW and beat MTSU.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

But didn't have huge leads. This choke job was the equivalent of the Gophers choke job against Michigan.

Michigan wasn't a cupcake. it is much worse to choke on cupcakes, than on real meat.

A wee bit early in the season to think that the 1st/2nd game of the year will show what type of team UND will be. ;)

not this year

Haha. A bit early for this prediction too. :p

I said "theoretically." ;)

Comments like this translate to..."no puck practice"

I'd say they earned it.
