He is a good player and I wouldn't be suprised if he decided on UND. My guess is he wants to get a way from home. Sometimes that is a problem for the Gophers.

UND picked to win the WCHA by both the coaches and the media:

Media Poll

Genoway got some love for POTY in both polls, with Gregoire and Trupp also mentioned in the media poll. Forbort was 2nd for ROTY votes in the media poll.
I'm surprised there was no mention of Kristo or Nelson.

Schmaltz, a highly-recruited defenseman from Verona, Wis., verbally committed to UND, choosing the Sioux over Boston College, Colorado College, Denver, Minnesota, Miami and Notre Dame.

“I just feel like North Dakota is the place for me,” Schmaltz said. “Obviously, the rink is the best in the country, maybe in the world. I really like the coaching staff, the campus and everything.”

Also an association with the Air Force would strenthen our ties to aviation.

That and the schools FAA callsign is "Sioux," which the NCAA can't touch, and would take a mess of bureaucratic paperwork to officially change.
