University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

I don't think it will be that difficult to change once the decision is made...

And don't tell me the FAA moves quickly...:p yes, I do know what you were getting at

yeah, they want to violate you, believe me, you'll get that letter uber quick. That being said, I don't see that callsign going away anytime soon.

So, I gather most Sioux fans are super-optimistic about the upcoming season. Is there anyone here that sees a weakness or something that will cause this team to not do what we want it to do?

Subpar defense. Two SCSU fans on Facebook taught me that UND doesn't have a good defense.

Sure. I think there are any number of factors that should cause us not to engage in excessive exuberance or hubris until the final outcome is known.

First, with respect to the team itself, there are 3 things to look for, imho:

1. Team Health. How does Genoway respond to his injury and his year off, and can he stay healthy for the entire year? Can we avoid any major or long term injuries, especially to key players?

2. How does the team replace the lost strength up the middle due to the departure of Zajac and VandeVelde? The center position is a key one, especially for crucial faceoffs in your own zone, and those guys were our go-to guys last year.

3. Will the goaltending be enough? Brad continues to improve, but he must do so this year as well. He's gotten better in the big games, but I think he really needs to show that as the games get more important, his performance elevates.

I think a couple of other factors include these. The last few years there have been very high expectations placed on any number of teams, who, on paper, appeared at the beginning of the season to be destined for special things. You can go back to the MN team of 2003-04, a couple of the Sioux teams after 2005, DU and Miami last year, etc... They never lived up to the hype. I've always preferred to come in a little under the radar rather than like Michigan in 1996-97 or the Sioux teams the three seasons after that, with a target on your back all year.

Finally, there are some really, really good hockey teams this year. BC, Miami and Michigan should all be outstanding, and their coaches have shown they know how to prepare their talented teams.

If the Sioux are to reach their ultimate goal this year, it's going to take a lot of hard work, and probably more luck.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

good post SJ --- all of that is true...

but #1- every team deals with the what ifs on health... so that is really a mute point.

# 2 i think will be the biggest concern -- faces offs are a huge part of the game ( just look at TOEWS in the playoffs and in canadas gold medal run), that being said I think knight and mario setup nicely and hopefully nelson can come right in and hold his own, and we know malone is just a horse out there.

# 3 Eidness will not have to be super brickwall this season the team in front of him is loaded, and sure he will have to stepup ever now and then but with the talent in front of him, i do believe that he wont have to.

and now for # 4 drop the frickin puck already!!!

LETS GO SIOUX!!!!!!

#1. Yes, teams deal with health issues, but you can argue that losing Genoway was more significant then the Gophers losing Leddy, for example. It all depends. You lose MacWilliam, not necessarily a huge derailment. You lose Marto...

#2. Faceoffs are significant, and there are some teams that are very good at faceoffs (CC and Wisco come to mind). This will be very important.

#3. Eids will still have to be big this year. As I've always said with him, he needs to make saves that he's not supposed to make. Saves like Lammy gave us in the 2007 semi game against BC. He still wanders a little bit too much for my liking. That being said, I have seen him come up huge in some big games (against DU in the Final Five last year) and I think if he's successful, the Sioux will be as well.

#4. The parity in college hockey is closing rapidly. And like Schloss said, the one-and-done format is crucial. Run into one hot goalie (2004??) and you can watch your season go away just like that. While I think that teams can carve their own destiny (Minnesota 2003, BU 2009), luck does factor into play, especially later in the season. This UND team is extremely capable of doing great things, but a lot of other teams are as well.

1) The patented UND slow start.
2) Boston College.
3) The injuries sustained from side splitting laughter after the UND v UMN series.
4) Frattin's landscaping business.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Wow according to all you SUE fans UND will be unbeatable this year...Genogay better start growing his playoff beard now if we wants to have some peach fuzz by April. Maybe he can get some tips from Duncan or Bina on how to grow facial hair when you are trapped in a 12 yr olds body.

Seriously though, everyone knows you will get bounced by a 3 or 4 seed in round 1 of the playoffs, just like you do every year since Hak has been coach!

Go FlickerTails!

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Should be a piece of cake. Right now they're debating in the Eagles thread whether the team will average 6.5 or 7 goals per game this year.
I'll bet its 8 goals per game with a 0.02 GAA ;)

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Captains for this year were announced.

Genoway - C
Marto - A
LaPoint - A

I wonder how many other teams have all defensemen as their captains? Anyone doubt where the strength of this team lies?

Kristo to sit out the first game for a violation of team rules. According to the Herald he got a ticket for underage drinking.

Was he throwing lawnmowers while underage drinking? If so they should understand it's all part of the strength and conditioning program at UND and let him walk.

Re: University of North Dakota, version 2.0

Pretty stupid. Sloe Gin asked earlier what types of things can derail a team. Stupid behavior is one. Let's hope Danny learned his lesson.
