UND gets to still use the nickname for another year...so better get your jersey sometime this season. :)

As for a new nickname, I think they are waiting until this one is officially retired before coming up with a new one (I haven't heard of anything at least).

Hopefully, they will let the student body have a nickname choosing contest, and then vote on one they like. that way, they will get one that a bunch of 18 year olds think is cool, and all the old people, like you, think is really stupid. something generic, that at least 1000 high schools already have.

A new nickname for UND is a problem, what with the rink and all. Not only racial but gender issues confront sports nicknames. Consider nearly all college team nicknames are masculine: Bulls, Gamecocks, Rams, Deacons, Tomcats, Trojans, Bulldogs, etc. I suggest a nifty compromise which will satisfy the women as well as the tribes, and maybe even satisfy the nickname stipulation attached to the rink.

The new nickname could be 'THE FIGHTING SUES" - and the emblem could be an angry caucasian woman weaing an apron with the name "SUE" emblazoned on the front and brandishing a rolling pin with a hockey stick blade on one end.

Okay, so it's not a perfect solution, but do you have a better one? At least it's better than "FLIPTAILS" or "CHEETAS."

Why don't we just rename the team the "Cherokee Warriors" and paint a bomber cap and pilot's headset on the Sioux head?

Actually, it's reflective of the history of the state.

From Wiki:
The Gopher mascot is a tradition as old as the state. Minnesota was tabbed the “Gopher State” in 1857 after a satirizing cartoon, depicting nine Gophers with the heads of local politicians pulling a locomotive, was published.[1] The story was over legislative action for a $5 million railroad proposal in western Minnesota. Later, the University picked up the nickname.

The “Golden” adjective has not always been a part of the Gopher nickname. During the 1930s, the Gophers wore gold jerseys and pants. Legendary KSTP radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term “Golden Gophers” in reference to the team’s all-gold attire on the field. From 1932 through 1941, Minnesota compiled an impressive record, losing only 12 games and winning seven Big Ten titles and five national championships—a true “golden” decade of Gopher football.

Should their name be changed to the Gallium Gophers to properly reflect the current state of Minnesota athletics?

I believe the Gehenna Gophers would be more appropriate as they seem to be in a hell of their own making right now.

NHL.com article on Brock Nelson at the WJC evaluation camp and his family's historic connection to Lake Placid, NY and the Olympic training center.

"The famous picture of the pile-up they had after the game, it's everywhere," Nelson told NHL.com. "It's in the (Olympic) Training Center where we're staying, it's on the front of the rink. I see it everywhere. That's pretty cool.

"It's pretty special. Not many kids my age have that in their family history. I'm lucky to have that."

"I've never been through the USA (Hockey) program, so this is a new step for me," Nelson said. "After the first day, I think the guys are great and being out here with them and being able to play, it's been pretty special."

It's also helped that he scored a couple of goals.

The next place all his new-found knowledge will be put to use is at the University of North Dakota, where he'll play this fall.

"Give him another two or three years and the size he's going to put on, he's going to be a pretty big body," Gordon said. "I don't think he's even touched the tip of the iceberg with his ability."

How about the Northern Seminoles ? The NCAA has deemed the Seminoles to be not racially offensive in thier opinion. I hate UND but they will always be the Fighting Sioux to me

I wear my UND Fighting Sioux apparel a lot in the St. Cloud area where I live. A lot of time people ask me , "What are they (UND) going to call themselves next year. My reply, "NATIONAL CHAMPIONS HAS A NICE RING TO IT.":)

Question: Are personal attacks and slurs a part of the natural aging process of former athletes who spent too much time yapping during their playing days, or is this nasty habit of gratuitous insults the result of other, unknown character flaws?

Interesting hypothesis, Sloe, but if you examine the unprovoked character assassinations on this site you will quickly discover the identity of the poster is a much better predictor of rude insults than the identity of the target. Also, the posters on this site who are the object of foul language outnumber the posters who delight in such crude exhibitionism. This speaks well of college hockey fans in general, don't you think?
