Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

It's been a rough couple days in Gopherland, Happy just needs to vent a little.
It's understandable.
Maybe he'll feel better after playing in the Sioux thread a while. The people in this thread have high hopes for the future, good vibes are contagious :D

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

The Sioux are going to suck this year. Happy e-mailed me reasons why and they were valid points.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Happy pointed out the the Sioux haven't done anything since 2000 and then pointed out that the Goofers have a winning record against the Sioux overall. I realized most of those victories were in the past as he declares we live in. Happy sucks so the Sioux must also. Simple math really.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

he knows all too well that the Gophers are headed to yet another lower half finish in the WCHA (is that 3 or 4 years in a row now...I forget). ;)
Actually it would only be two years in a row; in 2009, they finished 5th in the league (swept SCSU in the first round and lost the play-in to UMD). 2008 was the year they won 2 of 3 in Mankato and finished runner-up in the F5.

2010: 7th

I wonder if the Gophers might replicate what the Sioux have often done under Hakstol, losing a bunch of games during the first half, then putting things together as the younger players adjust. It would be interesting to see them go into the playoffs with some momentum and, hard as it is to say it, it would make things more like they are supposed to be between rivals.

I'd say the odds are against it. There's little proven scoring in the lineup, so unless a couple freshmen have major impacts and some of the returners have breakout seasons, the team will have to hold the opposition to two goals per game to have a realistic chance of winning enough of them to make the NCAA's.

Kangas has that potential *if* the defense plays well in front of him (think 2nd half of '08). However, if they don't, MN will give up around 2.5 per game (roughly what they'll probably end up scoring) and be somewhere around .500. The only real wild card this season is that Lucia could very well be coaching for his job. If there isn't significant improvement over last season, he could be shown the door.

Kangas is a headcase....

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

I believe you mean former rivalry. A rivalry requires two evenly matched teams.

Dang it, Dirty, we're trying to make these guys feel good. Their program is bleeding like a stuck hog and fans are starting to move over to SCSU where they can cheer for a winner. If things don't turn around soon, the gophs could end up playing their road games in Stevens Point and Oshkosh instead of Engelstead. How would that make you feel?

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

The last WJC intrasquad game was today. Team White won all three games, winning today 8-3. Team Blue had a 3-1 lead after two periods, with Campbell in net for all three Blue goals. Then Gothberg came in and didn't allow a goal the rest of the game, and Team White kicked butt in the 3rd (behind a hatty from UMN incoming recruit Bjugstad) to win 8-3.

The roster will get trimmed down tomorrow and then the remaining players will have exhibitions against Finland & Sweden.

I would imagine with their performances that all 3 Sioux recruits (Nelson/Gothberg/Forbort) in attendance will make it to the next round of cuts.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

All three UND recruits advance to play Sweden/Finland at the WJC camp.

Gothberg is having a very good camp, leading all four goalies in Save %, GA, and GAA. Houser was released.
