Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Yeah, that's what we said last year.......and the year before........and the year before that.

I suppose you could say that about any WCHA team floating in the 4-7 spot the last few years.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Hey all a team has to do this season is get top 6 to get home ice and then anything can happen.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

It's about 50-50, which is what one would expect in H2H meetings between two powerful programs over a long period of time.

FTR, my preference is to see both teams be good simultaneously as it leads to far more memorable matchups - whether or not they turn out well for MN. While any idiot can laugh at a rival when their team is terrible or mediocre, it's difficult to care quite as much about the games when you know the opponent is putting a steaming pile of crap on the ice.
It's fine for a year or two when your rival sucks. But, yeah, the games are much more entertaining and fun when both are legitimate national title contenders year in and year out.

USHL ALUMNI VOICES: DANNY KRISTO

What is your off-ice training like?
DK: Most of my teammates here at North Dakota are dedicated to off-ice training, so we pretty much have our whole team up here for the summer. We lift weights twice a week – legs twice a week and upper body twice a week – and one day of agility and sprints to work on speed and quickness. I mean, it would obviously be nice to be home for the summer, but if you are a committed athlete, there's no better place to work out than at your school. We have a great weight room and great facilities, so I live up here for the summer and make the most of it.

So what's next for you? What are your career goals?
DK: Well, a lot of people have been asking me that lately, but basically, I want to focus day by day. We only lost two seniors last year [at UND] and we're all looking forward to next season. We're also pre-ranked #1 in the country, and we all want to win a national championship next year – bring the title to my home now in North Dakota. We just want to get better every day and live life to the fullest.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

That's not the point and you knew that before you said it. :)

Legitimately, and without sandbagging, where do you see MN finishing this season?

Granted, most fans of MN, UND, DU and Wisconsin would never be satisfied with a 6th place finish. On the other hand, some years we all just have to expect it's not going to our year and all we're looking for is a puncher's chance, which in this case means home ice for the 1st round.

Me, I think UMD will win the regular season, followed closely by UND and SCSU. But after that I think MN will be in the mix with DU and Wis.

I see MN finishing between 4th and 6th, depending primarily upon Kangas and the contribution of some of the freshmen.

I seem them finishing anywhere between 3rd and 8th. I don't think I can narrow it down as fine as you have. I agree with your list but I think one of those top 3 will fall and I think UNO will surprise and make it to at least home ice and maybe even top 4.

8th will happen if they don't see any of the kids they've been waiting for finally emerge. There's a big list there.

3rd could happen if they see 3-4 of the kids who haven't emerged all come alive at the same time.

My biggest hope is that no team with that much talent can be that unlucky for too much longer. It's time for the worm to turn. But if the kids just stand around and wait for it to happen it'll be another long season.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Barring any more pro defections, I think the league is shaping up to be the usual meatgrinder. North Dakota looks loaded to me - fast, deep and experienced. UMD will probably be right behind UND with a top end offense. After that it gets kinda murky. I think SCSU will probably snag third with the solid balance they have, with DU, Wisconsin, Minnesota and CC battling it out in the mid pack. There really isn't a lot of difference in the mid pack. DU has a solid 'd' but lost 55% of their scoring and could be anywhere from third to seventh, depending on if their new goaltending can hold them in low scoring games. The Gophers have seven seniors who will lift them up from last year's mediocrity to a better level of play - how much remains to be seen. UW is somewhat gutted but well coached with some good players returning. CC may not have a ton of high end players, but they've got a lot of respectable WCHA performers who know the league and the grind - they are a darkhorse that could also finish anywhere from 3rd- 7th. Next I see Bemidji, UNO and MSUM fighting for respectability. The Beavers and UNO are new to the WCHA grind, and they will likely be worn down in the second half. UAA and MTU will likely slug it out at the bottom - they both lost a lot of their better guys..

USA leading Finland 4-1.
The 4th USA goal was a PPG scored by Brock Nelson, assisted by Derek Forbort. :)

EDIT: Forbort with another assist, USA now leading 5-2. Forbort and Nelson are now tied (with 3 others) for team points lead.

Quote from Mark MacMillan: "... the biggest thing for me is adding weight and strength... I think going to North Dakota is a great opportunity to to do that"

Check out http://twitter.com/RyanPinder (Penticton's PBP guy) for more quotes from his interview with MacMillan.

Gopher seniors (e.g. Barriball, Kangas, Fairchild, Hoeffel, Cepis, Wehrs?) will most likely determine the pace and outcome of the season not the freshman.

Quick, UND fans! Where in Grand Forks should I go eat tonight? I have the company card, so I don't have to pay, and I want a good, expensive meal. :D

The Toasted Frog has the best food in GF, period. Try the filet and cheesy pickles for an app if you are disappointed with the meal it's because you are a low taster. ;)

Really Dirty, Sanders? Top $ does not equal quality, I would rather eat at the Bronze Boot than Sanders with the exception of Thursday night sushi.

the biggest guy to watch on that list is Barriball. Can he bounce back and have a good season?

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

I thought his primary goal was to spend as much money as possible, so I gave him the proper answer.:p
