Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

The roster is set on FightingSioux.com for this upcoming season.
Some notables, courtesy of Brad:

UND posted the team roster to the website today. There are no major surprises, but there are notable items.

At the top of the list: Joe Gleason and Ryan Hill are listed as forwards/defensemen. UND has great depth on the blue line and this could be a way to bolster the forward unit and get the sophomores in the lineup more frequent.

This is not to say it's a definite move to forward for these guys. A couple of months ago when I asked coach Dave Hakstol about the possibility of moving a defenseman up front, he indicated that the team may have to adjust on the fly this season. But now we know the two guys who are most likely to move.

Other items:

* Taylor Holst isn't listed on the roster. It's likely that he's not through the Clearninghouse or admissions process yet. That process is sometimes more difficult for international players and Holst grew up in Austria. If he doesn't get through, it will be interesting to see if the Sioux add a different recruited walk-on.
* The freshmen have their number assignments: Derek Forbort will wear 4, Derek Rodwell will wear 11, Dillon Simpson will wear 18 and Brock Nelson will wear 29. Simpson's father, Craig, wore No. 18 in the NHL. Numbers 6, 14 and 16 will remain vacant for a second straight year.
* Tate Maris has earned a roster spot as the third goalie. This is not easy to do for an on-campus pickup. One player told me that the team really liked Maris. He has obviously putting in the work as well.
* Brent Davidson is back to forward, as expected.

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

Does this mean we might actually see Hill get some ice time this season?

I would doubt it, unless there are lots of injuries.
We all know about the great depth on the dman side, but we still have these guys for forwards:

Kristo, Cichy, Lamoureux, Knight, Rodwell, Bruneteau, Gregoire, Trupp, Frattin, Malone, Hextall, Rowney, and Nelson.

That's 13 forwards prior to adding Davidson, Gleason, Holst, and Hill.
From that list, Hill would probably be the 17th forward vying for 12 lineup spots.

The "tale of the tape" on these guys looks pretty good.

Blood comes in as a 212 lb nasty freshman. He's now 235, having added 15 lbs. MacWilliam +7. LaPoint +10. Even Trupper managed to get bigger. If they sat around eating cheese doodles all summer, and their weight gain is similar to the one I usually see, could be a long winter. On the other hand, if the offseason workouts went as indicated by Hak, I like it.

NHL HOCKEY in Winnipeg.

Defending Champs the Chicago Blackhawks Lead by Captain Serious Jonathan Toews, in their preseason opener, take on the T.B. Lightning Sept. 22nd in Winnipeg, MB.

Hopefully there will be a lot of Sioux sweaters in the crowd.:)

Re: University of North Dakota - Offseason Thread 2010

New commitment for UND for this fall, possibly to replace Holst (who might not have made it through the NCAA Clearinghouse...grew up in Austria):

The MVP of the MJHL has committed to play at UND this fall.

Taylor Dickin, 21, had 40 goals, 52 assists and 92 points with Selkirk last season. Dickin has good size at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds. He participated in the Toronto Maple Leafs' prospect camp as an undrafted player.

For more on Dickin, see the MJHL release.

I have no confirmation yet on what this means for Holst, but this certainly makes it appear like he did not make it through admissions.

From an earlier release:

Taylor Holst isn't listed on the roster. It's likely that he's not through the Clearninghouse or admissions process yet. That process is sometimes more difficult for international players and Holst grew up in Austria.
