University of New England 2015-16

Re: University of New England 2015-16

As a long time watcher of UNE Hockey, this season was a great ride! It was great to watch the team mature as the season progressed. There are lots of young components to this tam that should continue to contribute positively in the next couple of years, as well as some "seasoned veterans" who will continue to improve. I will, honestly, miss the great competition that came to the Alfond, teams like Norwich, UMass Boston, Babson, Castleton, they provided some memorable moments over the years. Next year will be interesting, to say the least. Ultimately, the teams of the CCC will each get better (I hope), and schools like Nichols, Endicott and Salve, (all good teams now) should provide some more memorable moments at the Alfond.

Congratulations to Coach Swallow and the entire team, and a HUGE thanks for making winter seem a whole lot shorter!

I hope Norwich and UNE can find themselves on each other's schedules in the near future for non-conference games.

So do I. I think the very first ECAC game UNE played was against Norwich back in the Old Biddeford Ice Arena, Norwich won, I think it was 4-2 with NU scoring an empty netter late. If it wasn't UNE's first game it was among the first. The games in Maine have been great to watch and this year, they had two nail-biters. It has been a great run in the ECAC and NEHC, Here's hoping the CCC will bring just as much excitement and fun.

How? You Norwich has 1 free game each season (0 if we go to a 24 game season), unless they ditch the non tournament games vs. Platty and Midd.

Joe,

You don't know everything about Division III hockey. Stop inserting yourself into every thread just to do it.

They'd make a great addition to the Primelink and or Northfield Savings Tournament....

I hope this isn't going against your DIII Selection Committee Rules either :o back to the smokey filled room you go for your timeout lol

Boys, boys, boys! Can we at least agree that the games, for the most part, were fun to watch? And, it could become even better as UNE grows and continues their commitment to the program, and to all of their athletic programs. Hey, maybe, in a couple of years, UNE and Norwich could face off on the gridiron (I know that was a mixed metaphor!)

I was actually being serious, I'd like to see UNE in the Primelink for a year. Then again the last time I tried getting a team into the Primelink, it wasn't received very well by certain coaches.

Re: University of New England 2015-16

I know this is not the forum for it, but I want to wish the UNE Women's Hockey Team the best of luck up in Northfields this weekend. They have dons a wonderful job this year to make hockey, both Men's and Women's hockey on the map. It has been a great winter in Biddeford this year!

Oh,and the Women's Basketball is hosting the first round of the NCAA National Championship on Campus!

Thanks so much to all for the great dialogue and best wishes for UNE WHok in the NEHC Semis. We are UNE!

Now it is time for some post-season discussion. Record breaking season with a team not his own which is testimony to Coach and his staff. My first post season observation is that UNE supporters should give thanks that Red was extended two years in Orono or Coach might have been moving North!

That was my thought, exactly!!! Coach Swallow, and his staff, did an amazing job this year. I did get to attend quite a few games at the Alfond, and it was refreshing to see the team make in-game adjustments. I also hear, but please know these are only whispers and not based on any first-hand knowledge, that the locker room was a much better place, as well. I did hear from a few of the referees (granted, they can't be trusted!!! just kidding!) that the team had a whole different personality this year. They did not let the little things get in the way of doing their job!

So, you better believe I was happy to hear that Red got an extension. Now, I hope that Bowdoin doesn't come calling!

Re: University of New England 2015-16

I have to believe that Coach Swallow is looking to make the step to a D1 program next. That said, Maine will next be looking for a young coach who has demonstrated the ability to build a struggling program into a winner. A side step to Bowdoin, a program that doesn't need rebuilding, is hardly a good career move in my judgement. Tough shoes to fill and continued success will only be seen as an extension of the success they have had for decades. BTW, look for the current Bowdoin assistant, Jamie Dumont, to get serious consideration filling that vacancy.

Re: University of New England 2015-16

Guys the D3 job at Bowdoin is probably one of the top D3 jobs in the country. Top 1-3 rinks in NE and school can offer outstanding need based financial aid. NESCAC also offers great competition. Who wouldn't want the job?

I have to agree with you, Bowdoin is a great job. 34 years ago, when Sid was stepping down, who would have thought his replacement would last 33 years and create his own legacy!

Most NESCAC schools are great places to work, and, if you have the idea, as any young coach may, that you'd like to try D-1, not a bad place to step from. Just ask Norm Bazin at UML.

Coach Swallow is one of the good, young coaches who has been successful at two different schools. His resume is building, and, did I mention he is young!

Saying all of this, I hope Coach Swallow stays to develop UNE into a program of distinction that also demonstrates success on the ice!

Re: University of New England 2015-16

Congratulations to UMB on a great season and representing the NEHC with distinction. That must have been some game last night! Looking at the box score, giving up 6 goals in the second period and still finding the strength to come back in the 3rd. Also, how tough is it to give up a goal with 7/10 of a second left in the period! That is the stuff that gives coaches ulcers and gray hair!

I am going to miss not seeing them cone to the Alfond next year. I always love to see good hockey played, even if it's not for my team! Enjoy your summer.

Re: University of New England 2015-16

I am beginning to see some school publish their schedules for next season already, and I am really interested to see what the schedule looks like for next season at the Alfond. I know that it is going be be different, and it will not include some of the great young rivalries that were starting to establish themselves, especially in the last couple of years.

In the young history of the re-start of the program on the Biddeford Campus, there were some great games against Norwich and Babson, at least in Biddeford, and lots of excitement against St. Mikes, NEC, Castleton, St A's and UMass Boston. It's going to be hard to capture the same kind of excitement against Becker, WNE and Suffolk, not that they aren't good teams, it's just the history of the NEHC teams is considerably more significant with some great traditions.

I am assuming that the games with USM will remain on the schedule, I hope I'm not assuming too much.

Haven't started the countdown to next season yet, but I ma looking forward to a new chapter in UNE Hockey History. Enjoy the summer!

Re: University of New England 2015-16

Just look at Salem State and the start of the MASCAC.

Instead of having Norwich or Middlebury come to our barn, we got the likes of Fitchburg State and Framingham State. Ohhh the thrill.

After a while you get used to it. The Athletic Department likes it because the MASCAC rivalries should extend across all sports. And there were no overnight trips, so they saved money. Ok, I could see that. Money at a State school is tight.

On the bright side, your chances for an NCAA bid went up dramatically
