University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Gillanders is out for the season with a knee injury. She is allowed to red shirt this season though, so she can come back next year.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Brooke Amerman undressed a UMD defenceman (didn't see who it was) and skated in alone and tried to roof it but luckily for UMD she missed the net.

Packer with a hat trick...of penalties, so far. Interestingly, the first penalty of the game didn't occur until well into the second period.

UMD's power play is still looking like there's nowhere to go but up.

The 'Dawgs are not looking like an unranked team playing the #2 ranked team in the country.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Huertes with a nice top shelf backhander on the first shot in the shootout which was enough for the win. Black with a nice save on Turnbull on UW's last shot in the shoot out.

Packer with 4 penalties and a goal in the game.

The 'Dogs' falling asleep to start the third period was what cost them the regulation time win...even though it was only for 1:01. They played one minute shy of a full 60 minutes...I guess there is something to that saying.

If they can ever get their power play functioning UMD could gain some decent ground in the standings.

Don't think it was Brooke.

Don't think it was Brooke.
And now I'm going to have flashbacks, because Brittany's big sister did undress plenty of D in her day, and she usually didn't miss the net. :(

Looks like you are correct. I checked the UW roster after the game and saw that only Brittany is on the team. I made the mistake of assuming Hansen should know...he mentioned 'Brooke" several times during the game...and I kept thinking how many years does this tandem get to play for UW?...seems to me like it's been five or six already. Guess I should have known better than to think that he should know. I just got side tracked from there and forgot to get back over here to correct the error. Thanks.

I think I've been won over to ARM's opinion of his professional skills.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

He is kind of entertaining though. Tonight toward the end of the game when UMD was called for icing, he said something along the lines of, "Now they aren't going to let UMD change. This is ridiculous." How many years has that rule been in place? And then before the shootout, he replays an interview from a month ago with a player not likely to be involved in the shootout in any way. Priceless.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

'Dogs come up just short in tonight's game. Somewhat controversial location for the last face off of the game with 2.5 seconds left and UMD's goaltender out for the extra attacker with the previous action having taken place in front of the UW net. That placement, whatever the reason for it was, effectively killed UMD's last potential gasp to tie the game although if the face off had been in the UW zone it certainly would have had to have worked out perfectly for UMD to be able to score.

They've shown that they can play with some of the top teams...scoring output and, in particular, their power play has been their downfall in these close games as of late.

Substantially better job of calling the game tonight by Tom Hansen. He focused on the game instead of letting his mind wander as he is wont to do.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Team Russia 5 - UMD 2 with a Russian empty netter

Grapp and Carlstrom each played half a game.

6 games in 11 days for the 'Dogs and coming off an important series vs UW but similar schedule for Team Russia in the last 8 days.

Hopefully, it's not going to be costly in that Hickel went down at center ice with approx. 2:40 left in the first period and was down and being attended to for a very long time...so much so, that they called it a period and sent the teams to their dressing rooms. She didn't return.

Then Crossman went into the glass at the end of the Russian bench in the third period and she didn't return.

Hopefully, they recover and can play this weekend vs BU.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Shoot out at the OK Corral today in Boston. BU 6 - UMD 5.

Black had one of her meltdown games which is unfortunate since she had been looking consistently solid recently. She (mercifully) got the hook at 16:09 of the third period for Carlstrom. (Don't know what happened when the wheels started to fall off for her...she went cross crease to prevent a very slow feeble looking attempt at a wrap around and the next thing...she was on her back and the puck was in the net). Unfortunately there was no instant replay in today's game.

It was 2-1 UMD after one...3-2 BU after two...and then another six goals scored in the third!

UMD collapsed in the first couple minutes of the third allowing two quick goals to put BU up 5-2. UMD finally scored one to seemingly muster some momentum but then BU scored on a breakaway to go up 6-3. Less than a minute later UMD scored and added another shortly afterwards to shake up BU with Desrochers calling a time out. With a face off in the BU zone with 1:59 remaining UMD pulled Carlstrom for the extra attacker...but it was not to be.

Let another one slip away...they were in control until early in the second. The good news is that both Hickel and Crossman were playing today after sustaining their injuries last weekend.

So, I guess they are making up for their games this time last year when no one seemed to want to score...with the second game, I believe it was, ending in a scoreless tie.

Very nice looking arena.

Anyone know why there was only a Canadian flag hanging at one end of the arena and no American flag to be found at the other end or anywhere else?

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Don't worry Blackbeard, they have an American flag at Walter Brown Arena that's just as big as the Canadian flag. Both flags are located down the same end of the ice - each one is pretty close to being over a faceoff dot.

Check out photo #2 in this gallery from a year ago: http://www.goterriers.com/view.gal?id=127456

BU's uniforms may be commie red but they still salute the Red, White, and Blue like the rest of us.

Thanks.

It looked from the camera angle that the Canadian flag was over the goal so I figured that the American flag would be in the same position at the other end of the rink but there was nothing there. And then, thinking that they must be side by side, it couldn't be seen when the action moved to the near corner where the Canadian flag was...so, it struck me as being odd...really odd.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Another season, another first half has gone by.

Pretty promising crop of Freshman. Stalder-- Whoa. Morin- Solid but some dumb mistakes late in first half of season I wouldn't expect her making based on how she's played first half. She's fresh, she gets a break. Brykaliuk - could be dangerous if her linemates would help her. Huertas (not really a freshman but go with me on this)... holy cow. She can score. Again, and issue of linemates. Crossman seems lost (Transition to D1? ) , but willing to work. McGovern I've seen little of but like her commitment to the shift. Have yet to see the Austrian take a shift.... not to mention, the Delabre girl from Germany.

Typical ho-hum from the class that is now the juniors. McParland, yawn. Feels like the player that a major league spends big bucks on and doesn't end up doing jack. Hickle.. looked promising first half but all I see her do is skate frantically and do some fancy puck-handeling and then... nothing. Finish it, would you?

Kenyon is a god-****ed work horse. Her occasional errors pale in comparison to others because somedays she seems to be dragging people off that pine to get after it. But she can't do it alone. Solo senior if Gillanders is truly out... Saw her on crutches at the BSU series at home. Is she rehabbing to come back in the second half?

Tea Villa looking strong for the most part. Stauber gained some serious wheels but haven't seen her play too much lately. Where are we with Laquette, is she coming back from Team Canada next semester? Bram, hmmm. Has lots of potential, move your feet and watch the miracles happen.

We have goaltending problems. Hey, here's a question: How do you have three tenders all the same class?

What happened to the Gallap girl from Grand Rapids?

What WILLLLLLLL the second half bring? Please let it bet better than this. Let's hope the academic portion of their carrers is up to par and not like grade issues some hot-shots had last year.

Agree with respect to Stalder, Brykaliuk, Huertas, Kenyon's work ethic and Villila. McParland can be a game changer when she is really on but is not really on often enough...inconsistent.

Goaltenders all the same class and from what I've seen pretty much equal ability which I don't think is quite strong enough to help move this team higher. Black can be solid which is good but more than solid is required to anchor a top level team. And she is prone to meltdowns. Which makes me wonder why Carlstrom or Grapp haven't been given a lot more ice time...maybe one of them would be more consistent.

Miller will be having to recruit more goaltenders soon in order to get that rotation back in sync.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

UMD 2 - UND 0 after one with only 6 SOG's each.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

UMD 3 - UND 2 after two with the 'Dogs giving up a 3 goal lead which at the time was on 12 shots on goal.

Power play late in the period netted the 'Dogs exactly 0 shots on goal!...we'll see what the third period brings.
