Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season
Strange ending to tonight's game vs BSU but a better game than last night.
UMD really needs to get back to basics with respect to shooting drills. It's not too often that you score when you shoot straight into the goaltender's midsection which they seem to do a lot. I've heard it said by some players at this level that at this level they're supposed to know how to shoot so they don't do shooting drills. One might be forgiven for assuming that "how to shoot" necessarily implies "where to shoot" but first hand accounts, at least by these eyes, forces me to conclude that the two are too often mutually exclusive with the 'Dogs.
It strikes me that one is never so good at something that practising it is no longer required...ever. As a matter of fact it's just the opposite. Endless, continual practising at anything, no matter what that thing is, is the surest way to increase your odds of success at that particular thing and, conversely, the failure to practice is the surest guarantee of quickly accumulating rust and corrosion with the accompanying relegation into the ranks of the also rans.
So, I don't buy the "no practice required' thesis.
They don't call it the "five hole" for nothing...that's because there are four other holes. But you often wouldn't know it by watching how this team shoots.
As successful as Miller's teams have been in the past I think that she has missed the boat on this point attention to which could have brought her teams even more success. I've been saying this of this team for the last few years but I think it bears repeating. And for what it's worth, I certainly wouldn't think that the 'Dogs are alone in this regard.
Notwithstanding the above, Manitoba goaltender Mowat appears to have been a very positive acquisition for BSU.
