University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Regardless of Hanson's mentioning her name tonight a couple of times in the play by play, thereby implying that she was on the ice, such was not the case.

Gillanders played Friday, but not Saturday

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I can say this . . . UMD certainly looks leaps and bounds better than last season's team. There were many chances that were "just" misses . . . that is, lack of execution as the culprit rather than clear lack of talent (as was the case last season). And, that they clearly performed better in the second game is also reason for optimism for UMD fans. I thought the pressure UMD was able to put on the U's O coming out of the zone was impressive. "McP" has shown a determination on that end that I haven't seen in either of her other seasons . . . her efforts will not go unrewarded . . . against lesser teams and with the same Defensive effort UMD is certain to generate more easy scoring opportunities with that kind of pressrue.

On the other hand, The Goofs clearly had the better, faster talent. Hopefully, the younger players on this UMD squad will have a couple of take-aways:

1.) You must play hard and fast the whole game to compete at the highest level of D-1.
2.) You must shoot with confidence and authority.

GO DOGS!!!!!

Anyone know why we haven't seen the Austrian girl play yet?

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

UMD 3 - MSU 1 final, in a canoe tipper.

Morin scored for the 'Dogs from the point with 2:56 remaining in the game to pull ahead 2-1. Then about 30 seconds later Villila draws a charging penalty. MSU pulled Butters with about a minute left for a 6 on 4 but (an errant pass?) from the UMD zone lands on Kenyon's stick as she comes off the bench...and skates in for the empty netter.

Very good play by play I thought.

Best game I've ever seen MSU play...very competitive.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

I fully expect UMD to continue their winning ways this series . . . this is a Bulldog team on the rise . . .

Congrats to Morin for WCHA rookie of the week!!

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Big potential upset in the making!

The winless as of yet SCSU 4 - The imploding UMD 0 after 2.

4 unanswered goals by SCSU in the 2nd period on 19 shots so far in the game.

Two goals scored by Amy Olsen, a junior and the captain for SCSU, are her first two ever, apparently.

UMD defense put the puck right on the SCSU player's stick who was all alone right in front of Black.

Black got the hook for Grapp. What's happened to Carlstrom?

SCSU 4 - UMD 1 final!

SOG 53 - 28 for UMD. UMD only had 22 SOG after two...and outshot SCSU 31-9 in the 3rd period.

SCSU killed off 3 consecutive penalties in the 3rd. UMD power play was not impressive.

UMD was without Villila (to the Four Nations Cup)and Gillanders (still, to injury)...but that's certainly no excuse for the loss.

The win looks good on SCSU.

Miller wasn't impressed with her team's performance either...

Link didn't work for me, but I found this Miller quote on UMD's women's hockey website:

"The story title should read 'Halloween Horror Show,'" Bulldog head coach Shannon Miller said, clearly disappointed in her team's performance. "The way our team showed up tonight was disrespectful to the tradition of this program, to our opponent and to our fans."

Not sure if I understand why the Huskies should feel "disrespected." Sounds like her team ran into a hot goalie (Julie Friend stopped 52 of 53 shots), and the Huskies made the most of their opportunities.

Some might say every day in Bulldog land is a "Halloween Horror Show." --just sayin' ;)

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

SCSU 0 - UMD 0 after one...just like last night. SOG 12 - 7 for UMD. Seems like UMD can't buy a goal...several opportunities.

Fitzgerald in goal for SCSU. She's a very capable goaltender from what I recall from last year but it seems rather odd that Friend is not starting after her performance last night...unless there's some other reason.

UMD power play unimpressive again, on their first opportunity of the game in the first minute of play...recorded 1 shot on goal!

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

SCSU 0 - UMD - 1 after two. SOG 26 - 14 for UMD.

'Dogs finally scored on a power play.

Missed it but Krause got ejected.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

SCSU scores with 22.8 seconds left in the game with an extra attacker! Then McParland hits the crossbar with 7 seconds left. UMD hit lots of crossbars and posts tonight. Too many unconverted opportunities today for UMD.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

UMD 2 -0 in the shootout.

Huertes with a beautiful backhander top shelf and then McParland copied her for the win.

Some serious new shooters for UMD this year. The team generally needs to play more like it wants it.

This was a pretty uneventful game until the last minute of regulation time. Shouldn't be that way.

Very solid goaltending for SCSU again tonight...and at the same time UMD needs to work on the accuracy of their shots...missed a ton of opportunities tonight.

With the eventual return of Lacquette it strikes me that the 'Dogs are maybe two impact players away from moving up substantially, well into the top ten rankings. There's a decent amount of talent on the team that at times causes them to look well in control of their execution and yet, at other times, somewhat less so. Not dripping with talent like a few years ago but close to that line the crossing of which, it seems to me, would result in substantially more success.

Re: University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Women's Hockey 2013-14 Season

Strange ending to tonight's game vs BSU but a better game than last night.

UMD really needs to get back to basics with respect to shooting drills. It's not too often that you score when you shoot straight into the goaltender's midsection which they seem to do a lot. I've heard it said by some players at this level that at this level they're supposed to know how to shoot so they don't do shooting drills. One might be forgiven for assuming that "how to shoot" necessarily implies "where to shoot" but first hand accounts, at least by these eyes, forces me to conclude that the two are too often mutually exclusive with the 'Dogs.

It strikes me that one is never so good at something that practising it is no longer required...ever. As a matter of fact it's just the opposite. Endless, continual practising at anything, no matter what that thing is, is the surest way to increase your odds of success at that particular thing and, conversely, the failure to practice is the surest guarantee of quickly accumulating rust and corrosion with the accompanying relegation into the ranks of the also rans.

So, I don't buy the "no practice required' thesis.

They don't call it the "five hole" for nothing...that's because there are four other holes. But you often wouldn't know it by watching how this team shoots.

As successful as Miller's teams have been in the past I think that she has missed the boat on this point attention to which could have brought her teams even more success. I've been saying this of this team for the last few years but I think it bears repeating. And for what it's worth, I certainly wouldn't think that the 'Dogs are alone in this regard.

Notwithstanding the above, Manitoba goaltender Mowat appears to have been a very positive acquisition for BSU.
