University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

I just received my issue of "The Hockey News" today - there's a page-and-a-half feature on Bradly Nadeau. It was written before he signed with Carolina, but it's a nice article focused on his season at Maine. It also touched on his time in Penticton with Josh and the resurgence of interest in Maine Hockey.

For me, it was nice to see a feature on a kid from my home province of New Brunswick. Throughout the season I was very proud to tell anyone who would listen that this years Black Bears roster included not 1, not 2, but 3 key players from NB! My wife and I were at both games against Boston College and we were impressed with the energy and excitement around Orono that weekend. We met Lynden Breen's mom in Saint John on our way back to Mississauga, and told her that interest in the Black Bears was on the rise - even outside of Maine!

Things can change quickly in college hockey as we've seen in the past few days. I'm disappointed that I won't get to see an encore season from Bradly, but hope he has success at the next level(s). I hope the real fans will continue to support and root for the Black Bears next season regardless of the roster changes we've seen and are likely to see going forward.

There is a RW, Landon Paul, from Bulls Creek, NB that plays for Fredericton of MarJHL that is an 07 birth year and is a 4.0 rated recruit according to Nuetral Zone. Fredericton closer to Orono than St. John, NB or Madawaska, NB. So I am hoping Maine is recruiting him.

Let us know if there are any other D1 prospects up there we should be tracking. We get very little news of Eastern Canadian hockey despite being surrounded by Quebec and New Bruinswick.

Back in the olden days Maine hockey was pretty much the only NCAA sport in the Maritimes thanks to games being televised on WLBZ and its signal reaching across eastern Canada.

My junior year in high school we had a tournament in Moncton and our team stayed with host families. The kid I stayed with had two posters on his wall: Wayne Gretzky (of course) and Scott Pellerin. People around the arena talked about Scott like they knew him. They were so proud that "one of our own" was doing so well.

Games aren't on WLBZ anymore, and with the explosion of the Internet anyone anywhere can watch pretty much any game, but it is nice to see Maine thriving again up there. Hopefully it continues to be a source of good Canadian players that other schools overlook.

Growing up in Southern New Brunswick, my first exposure to Maine hockey was by watching on WLBZ-TV Channel 2? from Bangor. I was captivated by the energy of the crowds and the excitement of college hockey that I got from the broadcasts. I remember Scott Pellerin well (he's about my age) and was also proud to see him shine across the border. Now I often travel to watch the Black Bears, sometimes in Orono and sometimes when they travel for OOC games. Years ago my wife and I started going to Regionals and shortly upgraded to attending the Frozen Four almost every year.

The NHL can't replicate the genuine excitement of a crowd at an NCAA game. The students, alumni, players' families, college town residents - all who have a "real" interest in the home team - are what makes the atmosphere at any NCAA game unique. I was hooked at an early age by seeing it on tv, now I choose to spend my time and money on travel to see the Black Bears rather than wasting it on NHL tickets, parking, concessions, and merchandise that's insanely overpriced. I live 20 minutes from downtown Toronto, but won't pay to see the Leafs (not a Leafs fan anyway...).

Also 08 birth year Tynan Lawrence from Fredericton, NB....played at Shattuck St. Mary's & will play in the USHL for Muskegon in 24-25.

We can only hope so. He is a Blue chipper with a 4.5 rating according to Nuetral Zone. Let’s hope we get both of these Fredericton players. I can imagine with the Shattuck connection Barr is recruiting Lawrence hard.

Hurtig to Michigan Tech.

Thanks. Jack Richard, and Daimon Gardner committed elsewhere too. Here is an updated portal wishlist…

It doesn't look like he's in the top 100 in scoring in his league.

He was a select 17 national camp invite… https://teamusa.usahockey.com/2023boys17pdc

So he’s in pretty select company for his age group.

If you go here and sort by points per game you will see he was 6th at the U18 national tournament. This is pretty good indication he can score well in select company.

He was also a late 2nd round pick in qmjhl major junior. His USHL rights are owned by Waterloo. But he might have one more year of high school to complete at Mt. St. Charles.

Word on the street is that Josh is returning next year.

That would be great!

As a side not on recruiting… I noticed a player, Trenton Penner, committed to Alaska-Fairbanks. He is from Winkler, Manitoba. He is 6’2” and 190 lbs. He got MVP of the MJHL. I imagine he is a relative of Dustin Penner(also from Winkler).

High probability of Breen returning at this point as well. Still expecting something else to happen any day.

If both of those things happen, combined with an impact transfer or two up front, we could be in good shape, and I may have to take back my previous statement that it could be a rough year next year.

That game was insane. I'm no BU fan but that was one of the worst officiated games I've ever seen.. did Denver pay off the refs
