University of Maine Off-season 2024: Insert Pun Here

Who is they? I think Maine massively outperformed the talent they had. Only one team is happy at the end of the year but for anyone associated with Maine to be unsatisfied is completely nuts. I doubt there is a team in college hockey who doesn’t want to get better for next year.

It’s pretty obvious that Barr wasn’t happy in his post game press conference after the loss in ncaa playoffs. I’m sure he was proud of what the team accomplished since they showed great improvement. But that doesn’t mean losing to Cornell sat well with him. He wants the team to be better so he needs to do what he can to make the roster better to start with. Then coach them and develop them to a better finish. Every indication is he isn’t happy with close, or we participated. Not sure we would want it any other way.

How can anyone out perform the talent they have?? If they won they had the talent to win.

The trio of Fowler/Russell/Makar is a solid upgrade over Trudeau/Pabich/Lindauer so already a good start to the offseason for Barr.

I have zero problem with Barr letting it be known that "just being there" isn't going to cut it, even if this team exceeded just about everyone's expectations this season.

That mindset should please everyone in this fanbase, even the most ardently cynical on here.

You can be unhappy with the result and still appreciate everything the team gave. They worked their **** off for nine months or whatever it was and everyone should appreciate that. Obviously it’s on Barr to try to bring in more talent and hopefully next year will be better but when I hear the unhappy/unsatisfied/disappointed/whatever it really irritates me given how hard they all worked.

Edit: just to clarify, everyone had a right to be disappointed in the 2003 team for example. They had tons of talent and **** the bed, this team was a completely different situation. They made the most of what they had.

Seems like you love to argue even when you agree.

There is a new transfer 5’9” 165 lbs addition from Ferris State by the coolest name of Luigi Benincasa. He has 3 years of eligibility left. He scored 23 points in 33 games, not bad for a rookie. I must admit I am a big fan of the nifty quick small forwards. But shouldn’t Maine have a Luigi on the roster?

Only if they add a Mario as well.

Or....have Breen return for his 5th season...that would sound pretty good 2..!!

I didn’t find a Mario.

So a good compromise to keep everyone happy.

Breen stays to center the Nadeaus and NB line is back.

Through the portal we get Luigi Benincasa from Ferris State and Matt Copponi from Merrimack. We add Califiore to that line to make an all Italy line.

We could call that line Mama’s meatballs.

This would give us two lines of absolute buzz saws and mayhem to run circles around opposing defenses.

Who is with me on this?

Hey you guys have been out of the loop the past few days and heard Taylor Makar is heading your way...congrats on that. Just curious is he
was coached by Ben Barr at Umass (too lazy to look). Not surprised he chose Maine with/without this connections (regardless).

Anyhoo just curious. Carry on.

(hope you all fared well during the recent snowfest..eek heard 3 feet in some parts of Maine?!)

Barr coached Cale Makar, his older brother. Ben recruited Taylor, but it probably was not difficult since Cale went to UMass. Ben left and came to Maine before Taylor started playing at UMass. I think this is a case of a change in scenery may be beneficial. Maine needs some size in the line up since they just graduated Houle and Poisson. Seems like a good match all around.

What do you guys think of this new addition to the portal?

Daimon Gardner, 6’4” 200 lbs left shot Center from Clarkson. He is a 4th round nhl draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks. He is described as net front set screen, good skills in tight, uses frame well. He played with Renwick and Fowler in Omaha. He would have played this past season with newly acquired Russell as well. He has 3 years of eligibility left.

Lots of good players to pick from and most to all schools are zeroing in the right player(s)to add...with that makes recruiting tough also as you either get a player who buys into the program or bolts a year or so down the line...you can always replace players but if this is the norm from here on in...you will see big turnovers year after year...this is truly free agency 101.....tough to keep a solid roster in place.

Any team can outperform their talent level, if the coaching staff knows how to improve the talent, individually and (especially) collectively. You guys had that with Walshy, not so much with Timmy, and not at all with Red. From a distance, Barr looks to be in the gap between Walshy and Timmy. Question will be, whether he ends up being closer to Walshy than he would to Timmy? I too think Barr got the most out of this bunch, and moved them closer to the ultimate goal. I fully expect UMaine to challenge for the HEA title next season (RS and/or tourney) and improve on 3rd place RS and coming up a game short of the HEA Finals. Again, remember who told you first ... ;-)

A couple of incoming recruits with nice games in Madison's 5-2 win over the US U17 team last night. Andrew Kuzma had a goal and Patrick Berzins picked up the win in goal stopping 25-27 shots.
