University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

This LeBron and Mahome’s effect on these kids taking dives and turning every sport into soccer is unbecoming. The 3rd overall seed, 2nd in Hockey East (which had 6 teams in top 11) and Hockey East tourney winner had to play AT the team that finished 5th in the big 10 and was the last at-large spot…all because they petitioned for a bid to host 4/5 years ago. No other sport season in college or pro turns out like that. Fatal flaw in NCAA to cover costs and bake in attendance while totally throwing out fair, competitive advantage. Maine deserved better.

Not to blame any one thing, but they came out with a lot of energy - likely to combat the crowd. The strategy seemed to be: punish the fast team with physical play, but they got 3 penalties, 2 PP goals. Outshot 16-8. And their legs seemed to never to be the same after. It was one of their worst games of the year night 2 vs @ BC and game 1 vs @ UMass bad. Also both road games.

...Someone write a six figure NIL check to a 1st round pick...
This is already starting to corrode college sports, IMHO. Especially football and hoops. Hockey not far behind. Yes, I know it's reality.

Even the best of teams (and Maine is one of them) have bad nights. This was one of those nights.

Glad I never got caught up in sports wagering.

Penn State has been a different animal since January. They were in the 30s and climbed up to #13 in the Pairwise. They may have been a #4 seed, but they were #13 in the country. That's never going to be an easy game. Their record since Jan 1st is 14-4-4. They are just hot. Good teams go home the first night of the NCAAs. It's always been that way.

Glad I fell asleep. One thing I was concerned about was the big homecoming after the HE title. I don't remember that during Shawns era?? HE title is a goal for sure but it isn't THE goal . Sucks the team didn't show up for the biggest game of the year and the biggest game in many years.

No doubt lots to be proud of, good season for sure but huge disappointment in the end. Hopefully that leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the returning players.
same here went to bed after 2nd period..didnt want to watch anymore of this Fucking disaster.of a night

Total bummer to end a very successful and fun year. I was in the building and it was a hostile atmosphere for sure. Felt like Allentown coordinated with PSU to give them every home ice advantage they could (student section on the side the home team is supposed to shoot twice, Maine in the upper corner of the far balcony, playing their home goal songs after a goal)

Penn state was the better team last night and took it to Maine. That wasn’t the team we saw last week in Boston which is extremely unfortunate.

Super proud of where the program is and hopefully are heading. Next season is a mystery with some of the key pieces and leadership they’ll be losing but fully trust the staff to put something exciting on the ice.

It's going to take more than having a bad taste in their mouth. Maine scored 1 goal last year against Cornell at Springfield and only one goal this year. This team struggled to score in a lot of games this past season. Boija was the main reason for many wins. They are a hard working fore checking team that relies on getting pucks to the net front and battling. They really need a couple of skilled players. Penn State had speed, fore checking, skill and were peaking at the right time after starting the season 0-9. Great accomplishment winning Hockey East!

Well when you are the host team you get to coordinate things. Maine should try to bid to host in Portland.

Agreed. And there are many available from the CHL. It appears the coaching staff prefers the under the radar types and don’t prefer the high skill kids for fear they will have bad attitudes and affect the culture of the locker room. The problem is that the margin for error erodes when you play against the top competition. Maine finished 7-8-4 against teams in the field of the NCAA tournament. So they were consistently good against lesser competition but that margin erroded against better opponents. Need some higher skill in the top 6 forwards. Right now Nadeau is a crafty playmaker without crafty/skilled guys to finish off plays. I hope the coaching staff learns from the showing in NCAA playoff games the last two years and gets some higher skilled guys from the many ‘04 available from major junior.

how many draft picks does maine have...NONE..your point proven not much for skill or finess on this team

I thought Manchester would be good for Maine to host as well but after seeing that Manchester has no idea how to make ice that idea makes no sense anymore. Portland has more seats than Scheels arena in Fargo which seems to host often. The problem is that in the east there are arenas with bigger capacities that bid such as Albany, Worcester, Bridgeport, Springfield and Providence. Out west there are fewer options close to teams that are not home rinks.

As for the game it may not have made a difference but that charging that knocked down Boija should have been contested for a major even at the risk of losing a penalty for the challenge. I was very surprised there wasn't at least a minor called as it is almost always called when there is no contact beforehand. There was clear contact to the head with the torso and that led to his head hitting the pipes.

I've been saying all season long they lack offense. Bradly had it and was gone. Team had lacked skilled snipers types for many years. Probably back to 2012 or so.

Ugh, disappointing for sure. Cant win if you dont score. Glad I didnt make the trek up north to watch that live. Not a fun experience to be at if you are a Maine fan. Not sure what is in store for next season, lot of leadership leaving. PSU looks pretty good, be interesting to see if UConn can give them a game. I kind of doubt it, but we'll see.

This was the same performance we’ve seen a handful of times in the second half. Coach has stressed all year that with this group everyone has to be on or else the results are not good. The margin for error is razor thin. Said it again last night in the press conference.

Watching all the regional games this year I thought to myself wasn’t seeing anything that was particularly “scary” that would give Maine fits until last night. Penn St. played the fastest game of anyone in the tournament by a wide margin. They were smooth out of the zone and up the ice, tape to tape through the neutral zone, and made Maine look flat out silly. Looks like Maine had lead in their skates in any foot race, Penn caught up and passed everyone. I wouldn’t want to be playing them right now.

Just a q...IF UNH had been at Manchester yesterday and had won..would the 'home team' advantage been viewed the same? We were talking about this yesterday at the Manchester Regional.

Since Manchester isn't on the host list (at least not in the foreseeable future) what would stop Maine from hosting there if you couldn't get Portland? You guys would fill the place. I'm not so sure UNH would (at first glance)...

Anyway sorry for the loss...unfortunately a hot team hit and that was that. You have lots to be proud of but know you wanted more...See ya in Oct!
