University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Good game, and a good win for them. Boija looked really locked in. Nice to get that losing spell out of the way.

That was a nice win and a very valuable three points. I didn’t think Maine was necessarily the better team, honestly thought it was pretty even, but Maine hung in there and took their chances at the end of the second. I don’t think northeastern would have been happy with either of those goals, you obviously can’t leave guys wide open in front of the net like that.

Is it?

i’m watching on TV…saw 27 out there, could not remember who wears 27…then I saw 38 and tried to remember who’s 38….oh yeah, Oskar the Finn/Russian, but 27….can’t be a defenseman….hmmmm, then the announcers say his name…ooops.

the announcers mentioned Makar is the younger brother of a Hobey winner, and then I wondered which team has had the most you ger brothers of Hobey winners (and I’m gonna guess Maine—-with 4?)

Breen’s given Maine four great years and I would have him out there over someone like Fowler. It could be more of a load management thing so perhaps isn’t a slight on his ability.

Great Win. Another game Makar looking like he’s tapping into all that potential. Russell, Freel, and Scott with great games. Good job by Barr, lineup switches looked good.

Ice seems crappy??

Ice was soft. Puddles in spots. Puck carriers would leave puck behind because of it. Happened both ways.

Russell looked very fast on a few shifts tonight, did very well entering the zone with speed and making things happen.

Fowler seems snake bitten a bit. Had some chances, one a wide open net and Whitehead dives back in and gets fortunate the Fowler shot upstairs hits Whitehead square in the face mask.

It might be my last game at Matthew’s, so it is nice to watch a win.

We shall see if Maine is elite/strong enough to get another road win Saturday!

Didn't see the game but there's something I don't understand from the box score.
17:32 NU pulls goalie
17:38 NU called for hooking and re-insert goalie.
So either NU was getting called for a penalty when they pulled their goalie or they got called just after pulling the goalie. Or I'm completely missing something. I don't understand. Help me out here.

Yes, they pulled the goalie. Then after a different NU player hooked Maine guy which made NU put their goalie back in on the next face off. That Maine power play didn’t last long as I recall because they called Maine for a penalty not long after.

Good to see Maine getting guys camped out in front of net. Boija played well. Fowler got robbed. Not sure I like the way game ended, little sloppy, stupid penalty on Fowler but seems like a hard glove to the face should have been called on that exchange also? Another win tonight would be great :)

The penalty call on Fowler was garbage. I felt bad for him. I think he's going to be a great pickup.

He has alot of upside, still on the recovery path and getting the rust out from his injury that kept him off the ice last year. He should only get better as the year progresses. Barr speaks highly of him.

Yep that was the trash Fowler call that I said during the game...absolutely terrible game management call there.

Maine nowhere near played their best game and won. If they play their best game tonight they will sweep but I do expect some NU push back tonight and maybe some more luck for the Maine traitor Williams (I'm joking)

I thought it was clear that Keefes plan to start the game was to rough up Maine. Saw some cute after the play slashes too only one cheap one called with the trip. Last year it would have got under Maines skin and they may have retaliated this year they play composed.

Just tossing the idea around…….
I’m curious to see if Barr puts that top line back together tonight. Will it be “message received” by Breen and Nadeau and they have an impact game after being “demoted”?
If so, just make it a one last chance tonight and if that fails, back to last nights lines for Merrimack…
We’ve all seen coaching tools like this used to send the message with a good result. Hurt pride can be a great motivator.

Pretty sure Breens benching in the Quinnipiac game for OT was for the penalty he took at the end of the game. So I do wonder if that was carry over as well.

Lyndon Breen is a fantastic hockey player. 3 years ago he was great with Poisson and Houle, 2 years ago with Freel and Houle (toward the end of the season). Those guys are grinders. I think Fowler will be a good fit for him (pretty similar player to Freel).

Are you talking about the seasons when Maine won 7 and 15 games respectively?
