University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Post game press
**************

Coach Barr: https://youtu.be/uHuO_ZylE8c?si=cyVJyvQJCz6t8BPW

Says Arnott was playing for Carney in the 3rd. I’m hoping Carney isn’t injured again.

Taylor Makar: https://youtube.com/shorts/eqDnOwNsEuc?si=Iklw4T88rvIpKyG_

His first hat trick when his family is in town for senior weekend.

Nolan Renwick: https://youtube.com/shorts/Pph8nLGx4MQ?si=W47OEwjXTOgCydue

Thinks they were physical tonight which created more space for their offense.
Carney is injured. Right in front of me ankle..Couldn't put any weight on it..Likely out a while

4-1 win. Unfortunately the Mildcats couldn't maintain against Boston College so the Eagles remain 5 points clear.

ETA: Tickets for tomorrow have become available. There's quite a few in the balcony, EE and FF. $22

Pretty close to my take, but Albin has been the 1st star (IMO) in nearly every effing Maine game this season.

Frankie and Taylor both shined tonight, but this team -as hard as it plays- would be on the bubble right now without Boija, no reasonable doubt about that.
Agreed. The 2006 team comes to mind. PS FU Wisconsin

5 out of the 8 top teams in PWR from HE, unreal. Thought Maine came out flying last night. Few letdowns but it was pedal to the metal for the most part. Need that to happen again tonight. Taylor and Frank pretty good pickups for Barr :) Good to see Arnott get a goal. pretty nice pass from Neimo. Like to see a few less penalties . No doubt Boija has earned his spot in the another great goalie at UMaine list.

Yes, and I’m guessing a team signs him this offseason since he is a free agent that went undrafted. He appears to be up there on the same level as Swayman at the college level.

When you get great players thats going to happen. Assuming you are correct we were lucky to have him in Orono. Sure is fun to watch and hopefully we get to see him do that on the National stage coming right up. The guy is a stud.

Allentown Regional is changing after last night's Penn State win over Minnesota. Right now they are in and would be placed in Allentown as hosts. Best bet now is to root for another win over Minnesota tonight to get them off that 4 seed line.....and for Maine to keep winning in case BC slips and an outside shot at placement in Manchester.

This is how it looks right now to me:

BC
UConn
Denver
AHC

Michigan State
BU
Ohio State
Minnesota State

Minnesota
Providence
Michigan
ECAC

Maine
Western Michigan
UMass
Penn State

Playoffstatus.com does a really nice job laying out potential seedings. Penn state has a 30% of being a 3 seed and a 42% chance of missing the tourney.

My money is on Maine being a 1 seed and playing the winner of the ECAC tourney round 1.

This is nothing against Boija, I think he's an elite goalie at this level and I'm thrilled Maine has him, but Swayman was on a different level. In 19-20 Swayman made 1099 saves in 2,060 minutes. Boija has made 678 saves in 1,815 minutes. Looking back at the 19-20 roster I think there's less than half a dozen players that see the ice on the 24-25 team. Maine was a tournament team in 19-20 (before Covid) purely because of Swayman, I think there's 10-12 goalies this year that could swap out with Boija and Maine would still be a tournament team.

Swayman’s 19-20 season was one of the best ever IMO. No offense to the guys on that team but it was a 1 line team and the defense was not very good. Swayman turned away 40 shots a night while Boija has only seen that once this season.

With that said, I think Boija is one of the best goalies in the NCAA and will play in the NHL.

Completely agree with all of this. Swayman dragged the team to the edge of a national tournament appearance and was facing a huge amount of shots every single game. Boija has a very strong defense in front of him good at limiting shots against. But, also as you say, Boija is an elite college goaltender and I also think he will play games in the NHL.

It is very difficult to compare given they are, as you say, in different circumstances. My point is that he is a Richter finalist similar to Swayman(who won the Richter). Now, Swayman was already drafted and Bruins were fine letting him stay at Maine through junior year. With Boija, he is a free agent. So all teams will have an interest in signing him. You essentially are getting the equivalent of a 2nd or 3rd round pick(in hindsight) as a free agent. With Ostman he actually decided to not go pro even though he had the chance after his junior season when he was a Richter finalist. We know Boija is a stronger goalie. For these reasons, I think there will be a lot of teams interested in signing him.

Line up tonight:

Freel/Scott/Nadeau
Makar/Renwick/Russell
Fowler/Breen/Scholle
Niemo/Komarov/Pichette

Brazeale/Charbrier
Holt/Djuresevic
Antonacci/Nobes

Boija in net

Arnott is the extra skater

Berzins and Stewart the back up goalies.

Notes: Lesakowski, Dalton, Morse healthy scratches. Mitton, Califiore, and Carney injured.

Couple other notes on Boija before tonight’s game:

A win tonight would make him just the 10th goalie to get 20 wins in a season (last to do it was Dan Sullivan in 11/12).

It would also be his 30th career win which would move him into a tie with Al Loring for 16th on the Black Bears wins list.

If the season ended now, Boija’s 0.933 save percentage would rank 3rd for a single season behind Jimmy Howard(03/04) and Jeremy Swayman(19/20).

If the season ended now, Boija’s 1.62 gaa would rank 2nd for a single season behind Jimmy Howard(03/04).

He’s in elite company.
