UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Union has a very good class coming in, including two promising defensemen. The pipeline isn't dry.

Roman Ammirato, Center, Amarillo Bulls (NAHL) 17 G, 30 A
Kevin Shier, Forward, Toronto Lakeshore Patriots (OJHL) 21 G, 33 A
Ryan Scarfo, Left Wing, Powell River Kings (BCHL) 17 G, 31 A
Tyler, Hynes, Right Wing, Fargo Force (USHL) 12 G, 7 A
Nick Desimone, Defenseman Buffalo Jr. Sabres (OJHL) 13 G, 38 A
Connor Light, Defenseman, Omaha Lancers (USHL) 3 G, 7 A

Seems like a solid class, I know Scarfo was getting NHL looks earlier in the year. I also like how most of these guys have 30+ assists.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Someone is going to pick up Carr and I bet we lose Colin Stevens. Alex looked very good in his last two starts ......

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Stevens wasn't his best during the frozen four, maybe the pressure got to him a little. I expect to see Stevens back next year, a one year sample size is too small in my opinion.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

I don't see Stevens going anywhere. I would be shocked if Daniel Carr isn't signed. Edmonton could be a great fit being his home town.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Congrats to Shayne. Losing Bodie and Shayne will be very tough to overcome.
Lately it seems we say that every year, and every year we bounce back. That's the way it is with good programs. When Stevens leaves, whether it be now or after graduation, I have a feeling that Alex will step up as another top Union goalie.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Well, I agree Colgate being a top ECAC team. But Brown and Dartmouth next?? I said I thought Brown would be better but not that much better!!
Can someone find SB Nation's predictions from last year at this time?

Union above Dartmouth...also Brown will have two very, very legit scoring lines next winter. Check out how Dartmouth finished and who they bring back. Dealt with a lot of injuries this past season.

1. Colgate
2. Brown
3. Union
4. Dartmouth
5. Quinnipiac
6. Harvard
7. Yale
8. Clarkson
9. RPI
10. Cornell
11. St. Lawrence
12. Princeton

Early predictions

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

I'll admit in my preseason rankings from last fall I had the wrong Capital District team winning the ECAC. I had RPI, QU, Union, Yale as my preseason top 4.
Pretty close to my selections, not sure what meds I was taking with regard to my RPI pick.

TV ratings for this year's FF were way up. I guess that's not surprising since the bar was set pretty low in previous years. http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-releases/2014/04/frozenfour/

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

chances of Brown finishing second is zero...

more like 5th

Pre-Parade 2014-15 Lineup Prediction :D

Ciampini---Vecchione---Scarfo
Wilkins---Lichtenwald---Pontarelli
Cruice---Novak---Shier
Coatta---Ammirato---Bennett

Taylor---Desimone
Gingras---Light
Vasaturo---Henry

Stevens
Alex
Pieri

2014-15 Recruits:

Connor Light, 6'5'' Defenseman: "He has quick feet and good skill for a guy that big," says his prep coach, a former player at Yale University. The size is what caught most scouts' attention immediately, but upon further review there is more to Light's game than just his size. He'll play the body, but he's a smart player who knows the intricacies of the game. "He has tremendous gap control and a heavy shot."

Nick Desimone, 6'1'' Defenseman: "DeSimone’s offensive game has been outstanding this year and his ability to contribute offensively is very likely one of the biggest reasons Union stepped up its recruiting efforts. Not only is he the second leading scorer for the Junior Sabres with 8 goals & 19 assists for 27 points in 24 games, but DeSimone currently ranks first overall in scoring amongst all OJHL defenseman despite being in his first year in the league."
More info on Nick: http://wnyhockeyprospects.com/?p=3534

Ryan Scarfo, 6'0'' Forward: "He can become a high-end guy who scores and defends against the opposition's top lines. Union has a steal; he's someone who will help lead them to many more Frozen Four appearances."
More info on Ryan: http://unionhockeyblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/eyewitness-report-ryan-scarfo.html

Roman Ammirato, 5'7'' Center: “Roman brings an element to the power play and on the offensive side of the puck,” he said. “Defensively he is also very sound. To place expectations on a player at this point would not be fair, however I feel he will add great depth to our offensive punch, and be a contributor night-in and night-out. Now The one thing I do expect from Roman like all our players is to be a great teammate and a leader."

Kevin Shier, 6'0'' Forward: "Kevin is a gifted offensive player with a quick and accurate shot," Fortier said. "He has quick hands and is an amazing team first player. Look for Kevin to bring a smile to the rink everyday and bring an ability to score big goals."
More info on Kevin: http://unionhockeyblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/shier-commits-to-dutchmen-for-next.html

Tyler Hynes, 5'11'' Forward: "He can be a great second or third line player," said Kaufman, who played Division I hockey at Miami (Ohio) from 2005-2009. "He'll play in front of the net on a power play, he's very good on the penalty kill, and he'll be a great energy guy. He'll finish checks, block shots, and do a lot of things not a lot of people are willing to do." Local product from Guilderland, also played with Jeff Taylor prior to Union.

Who is going to be the Captain? Captains(s)?

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Congrats on a great season. I have seen you guys play Merrimack the last few years and have been very impressed with the program.

I expect Tyler Hynes will be a factor next year as well. Remember, the USHL is substantially stronger than other junior leagues available to college players (only Tier 1 league in US). USHL players seem able to step right in. See Taylor and Lichtenwald.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Congratulations on a championship year! For all the people who've been remembered in the thread in the last week, I believe Charlie Morrison would have enjoyed this moment.
