Five Union College students arrested after hockey game

Glenville PD, NYS Police, Niskayuna PD, Rotterdam PD, Scotia PD, and the Schenectady County Sheriff's Department were called in as mutual aid to calm the crowd of students. Police say that five people, all Union College students, were arrested on Saturday night.

The college released a statement on Sunday afternoon regarding the arrests:

"We are very proud of the way the majority of our students and fans celebrated our first national championship. Unfortunately, a handful of fans chose to behave inappropriately. As a result, they will now have to face the consequences for their actions."

Congrats Union and thanks for making this week (especially) and the upcoming year tolerable around USCHO.

Congrats! Quite a wild game. Obviously, college hockey parity is alive and well. What impresses me the most about you guys (and no disrespect), last week I went over your roster and I had not heard of any of your players or coaches. I believe I counted the players are from 16 different provinces and states. Then, a MN fan replied to me that you don't give schollies either! Impressive. Soak it in. I've been through all of our 6 national championships; never gets old.

Hey congratulations Union fans! What an impressive team. They were fun to watch.
They did everything well and just overwhelmed everyone they played.
Talk about a great way to finish the year. 1 loss in how many games? 22?
Amazing. Anyway congrats again!

I think you hit on many of the things that have made this accomplishment all that more satisfying and remarkable. Our coaches have done a phenomenal job in finding, securing and developing talent that often slips under the radar. Ghost is a case in point. He was an undersized raw talent still 18 y.o. when he stepped on campus, but by no means a complete player. Look at him now. The scholarship issue is a touchy one, because there are undoubtedly kids who get financial aid, on a need basis, and in many cases a substantial amount, to help them meet the $60K plus a year tab. We hear all kinds of stories about "games' that may be or may not be played, some of which is no doubt sour grapes, but it is still a major impediment and we have lost recruiting battles over it. On the other hand, there are a number of kids whose families have made a huge financial sacrifice to get their kids to Union. It's all very humbling.

He was a joy to watch. I'm struggling to remember an individual player that took over a game in a FF the way that he did. Man amongst boys and I believe that his obvious confidence rubbed off on his mates.

Congratulations to the Union fans and your very impressive hockey club.

Union left no doubt which team was the best in the land.

Enjoy your victory and off-season!

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Is this real? Yes, things have changed at Union and college hockey. However, nothing has changed at my work .

When the Blackhawks win the Cup I'm only happy for a day. However, Saturday will keep me smiling for days.

I watched the game Saturday at home. I could have gone to Philly, wanted to, but like a lot of fans I'm superstitious(Union once lost 9 straight times when I attended the game) so I couldn't chance it. Excellent job by ESPN, plenty of Union praise by Buccigross and Melrose, and Matt DuBrey on WPTR with his "that seals the deal", well...priceless! Loved all the fan support in the Wells Fargo. It seemed like there were 10,000 Union shirts! Next year's opener, with the "raising of the banner" is going to be a tough ticket. Love it... I think we're going to need a bigger rink!

We need to get Matts "Seals the Deal" from Saturday night online so I can play it over and over!

Congrats, Union fans. Well-earned championship for your team, enjoy it! For selfish reasons, I hope all your underclassmen jump to the pros. :p

Matt DuBrey is what we like to call in the business . . . . Good fondue!

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

I wish there was an official count of Union fans in Philly. I'm not talking about the BC/ND fans who were rooting for Union, but rather the actual fans who were wearing Union gear. I was shocked (and proud) at the incredible turnout.

Details emerge on the Frozen Holiday Classic, which Union will play in next season -

Bridgeport is becoming home away from home for the Dutchmen.

Those radio calls are golden. DuBrey and Unger are better than a lot of guys doing that kind of work for pro teams.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

About the only thing against him being NHL-ready is his size. A good d-man in the NHL should be bigger than 165 pounds, but if the Flyers think he's ready, then I'm sure he'll get plenty of monetary reasons to jump.

He's not getting any bigger. If his size works against them signing him that's permanent, and I just can't imagine that.
Size hasn't worked against this guy so far in the NHL.
