Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Don't mean to be presumptuous at all ... but the ECAC Frozen Four in Lake Placid is 3/20/2015 and 3/21/2015. At the same weekend on the other rink in Lake Placid, there is a big, kids tournament (looks like the same one that was there last year). If you want to be cautious, I would give some thought on making some reservations now, that you can cancel if we don't make it. Some of the hotels are already filling up for those dates. Some of the major chains, like the Marriott, let you cancel up to three days in advanced, so if we don't make it, you will have time to cancel at NC. The other possibility is to get a group and rent a house. Only Cornell (and BU) have won 4 ECAC titles in a row .... back in the 1960's. I don't even think we will make it back but if we do, and you make reservations now, you wouldn't have to spent half a day trying to find a place, if you come from afar.

Dartmouth Men's Hockey 2013-14 Season in Review
http://www.dartmouthsports.com/View...28&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=209529206&DB_OEM_ID=11600

After just three wins through January, the Big Green managed to rattle off five in the month of February alone (5-1-1) and entered the postseason tournament as one of the hottest teams in the league.

No other team in college hockey brings back more scoring than Dartmouth will in 2014-15 as 98.6 percent of point production returns (Penn State returns all scoring, but had no senior class this year). Look for a healthy Tyler Sikura to make a bigger impact next season after being sidelined for much of the year with a knee issue. Eric Robinson, Dartmouth’s big, hulking power forward, missed all but two games last year and is back next winter for a fifth campaign, adding to the depth of talented players back in the green and white sweaters this coming fall.

A core of 18 upperclassmen return with another solid group of incoming players and returning second-year skaters creating a mix of youth and leadership that should make waves.
It now is in the hands of those returning players to keep that late-season momentum rolling into next fall. They’ve seen what they are capable of doing in one of the best — if not the best — conference in college hockey. If they can continue to display the talent, heart and determination they did from February on, there is no telling the heights they can reach in the coming years.

I think Dartmouth has a new assistant coach that might also add a great deal to their prospects. They need to come up with and practice some set plays. I think we face them Nov. 1? They are big and physical. These are always nail-biters. I hate playing them.:(

Dartmouth always looks formidable and they do play us tough. On the other hand few ECAC teams underachieve as regularly. This year could be different, but they will need to prove it on the ice.

Love these pre-season predictions for last year. Not a very high opinion of Union Colege Hockey by Jeff Cox

Bodie and Carr only made ECAC honorable mention. Off a little, wouldn't you say ;)

I'll admit I didn't have Union as high as I should have but to be truthful this past season was first time I seriously covered ECAC in addition to Hockey East. If you look back to around the RPI series I was very favorable of Union, capital district rivalry and Gostisbehere. I also defended Bennett and Union in an article following the TUC incident.

Jeff: My appologies ..... I didn't make the connection

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

I wonder if strength and conditioning hasn't been one of our secret weapons .... and I wonder if the weight room isn't as important or more important as the modern rink in success. In Juniors and the Pros there is not the time for a full year round strength program that can add 20 lbs of lean muscle mass. When you look at Carr and Sullivan and Hatch how they were able to develop ... and how they were able to contibute in the playoffs ... could stand toe to toe with any 6'2" 220lbs and do battle in front of the net. In the playoffs, when we did lose battles, it was often to bigger, stronger .... and strength and conditiong is also about explosiveness and speed.

Union announced its incoming class today. There are two surprises -- both Foo and Brassard are coming this year, not next. The other six as expected.

One of Nate Leaman's innovations was to bring in Dan Gableman, the strength and conditioning coach. Union was one of the last D1 programs to go that route. He is well regarded by the players and the coaching staff. Of course with limited funding, he does not work exclusively with men's hockey, but does do a lot with them. I think most D1 teams pay a lot of attention to conditioning programs so if you don't you aren't "keeping up with the Joneses". I see it more or less as a neutral, but that's just a guess.

College spotlight: the Union Dutchmen by Cam Hasbrouck

http://frozenfutures.com/2014/07/21/college-spotlight-union-dutchmen/

The Road Ahead
The road ahead for the Union Dutchmen should be interesting. With Bennett as head coach, the Dutchmen have developed an excellent system that takes the ability of the team as a whole and puts it to use, focusing on a team-first mentality. At the same time, Union will be saying good-bye to several star players, including Shayne Gostisbehere, the only drafted player on the team. To be honest, I’m not sure what to expect from Union this season. On one hand, they could continue their excellent play due to their system, and lead the ECAC once again. However, on the other hand, it’ll be a much different team stepping onto the ice at Messa Rink in Schenectady this fall. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

So I think this is what we are looking at for next year, and assumes everyone returns. Placement in lines is totally arbitrary. Good solid team. Somewhere in the top half of the ECAC.
