UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

If Union manages 20 wins this year and goes, say 20 - 16, Coach Bennett will have amased over 100 wins with a winning percentage of .70. That will make him #1 winning percenatge among all active NCAA DI Coaches and in the top 4 of alltime, alltime. If a Jerry York or a Jeff Jackson were then to retire ....
I think you have a 40% chance.

My how times and expectations have changed with the departure of one man.

Boston College-Union Frozen Four Preview
By Christopher Mason, CBS Boston
April 9, 2014 2:43 PM

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2014/04/09/boston-college-union-frozen-four-preview/

"The Dutchmen are a remarkably well-rounded team, as they are among the top in the nation in team offensive, defensive and goaltending categories. However, their statistics may be a bit inflated due to playing inferior competition as a part of the ECAC Conference."

"With this inferior competition comes a lack of adversity. Union has been able to coast through its season given the talent on the roster, and they haven’t had to play a team of Boston College’s caliber."

Yes, we had to play many teams of Boston College's caliber, including Brown (who tied BC) and Dartmouth (year end), and BC will continue to see what the ECAC is capable of next year when Denver and BC play Brown and Dartmouth in the Ledyard Bank Classic in Hanover in January. This article is typical of the narrow focus, errors and omissions and heavily bias reporting of the Boston Media when it comes to College Hockey. Here is hoping the ECAC brings it home again next year!!!!

2014 NCAA Frozen Four Preview: Boston College vs. Union

Overall, the ECAC is far different than the conference that was much-maligned for more than a decade as an easy out in the NCAAs. League members Colgate, Cornell, Quinnipiac, RPI, and Yale have combined with Union to go 14-8 in the tournament over the past four seasons, with four Frozen Four appearances and a national championship (Yale, 2013).

And what sucks the most is that they had to include the club team known as RPI in the equation. Not only have they not won a game in close to 30 years in the ncaa tournament, they have not scored a single goal in close to 30 years. Almost 30 years........

Congrats to Phil Cohn and good luck. Send U some of those blue chippers! Phil Cohn has been named the fifth recipient of the USA Hockey Brendan Burke Internship. Cohn spent the past five seasons at Union, working as the hockey operations coordinator, student manager and video coordinator in that time.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Rosters have to be cut from 25 to 23 players in September, so he hasn't technically made the team yet, but hopefully this is a good sign.

It seems pretty official. The NJ Titans sent out a release announcing he made Sioux City and College Hockey Inc. also has him there now.

He has made the team as far as the tournament in Russia goes, but the Titans are also mostly looking at it from the PR view. Making the 25-man roster is definitely a big deal and his odds of sticking on the team I would think are very good, but there will be a roster reduction to 23 before the season starts (see link http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/jun...-30-man-protected-rosters-and-affiliate-lists) Sometimes the 2 cuts happen by themselves due to injury or a player just deciding to go elsewhere, but players are cut who would otherwise want to play. This happened with a U recruit 4-5 years ago (Jeff Vallecca - ended up going to Merrimack) who made the 25-man for Cedar Rapids and got cut in September. I'm hoping that Walker was not one of the last picks for the 25-man and that his position is secure - is possible he's been told this verbally and maybe that is why the Titan's announcement is so rosy.

"Snively, Kurker and Walker were the most productive line at the camp,” said Varady
"Kurker and Walker are a pair of 6-foot-3, 210-pounders"
"The 17-year-old Walker scored 76 points (29, 47) last season for the North American Prospects Hockey League’s New Jersey Jr. Titans"

God, he looks great !!!! What am I missing?

Heisenberg has Walker listed as 5'10" 170#. In any event, I've been hearing very good things about him.

..and doesn't hurt that SC coach Jay Varady is a U alum too! Like Wholin, everything I've heard about Walker is he's a high skill kid.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

Top 4 ECAC Tournament Teams by point totals - These are the point spreads of the top teams (1-4) that got a ECAC Team into a first round bye
================
2007/2008 25-33
2008/2009 26-32
2009/2010 26-32
2010/2011 24-36
2011/2012 23-32
2012/2013 26-37
2013/2014 26-37

We would need 13 wins or some combination of wins and ties to get to 26. Possible. The one thing we have is playoff experience .... if we can get make it to lake Placid.

Re: UNION Hockey National Champion's Off Season-U Believe it?

So how competitive is the ECAC?
Here are the point spreads between #1 and #12, between #2 and #11 and between #3 and #10 (the middle eight teams)

2007/2008 20/14/11
2008/2009 22/16/11
2009/2010 21/15/11
2010/2011 25/22/11
2011/2012 18/14/8
2012/2013 23/12/6
2013/2014 29/13/12

The last column shows how few points separted the middle 8 ECAC teams. This is an extremely competitive league and has been for a while. In 2012/2013 six points separated the middle eight teams. You can't get much more competitive than that. Next year will be no different, especially if no one pulls away.
