Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Just in ... Dartmouth is going to "roll right on through us" on their way to Atlantic City. Here is the quote: "Although Dartmouth is only is 7-10-3 since beating No. 2 New Hampshire in late December and climbing as high as No. 8 in the national polls, the Big Green now has some momentum. Patterson said he thinks his squad can roll right on through Union and into the conference tournament semifinals in Atlantic City, N.J. http://www.vnews.com/home/5051441-95/dartmouth-green-harvard-game Well, I guess there is no point in playing if we are certain to loose. Somebody is counting their chickens ......

This just in. Inflammatory local reporter uses inflammatory language to improve the story. Details at 5.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I can't read the Simpson article for some reason, but I didn't see that he played any different than he had been. He did score the even-strength goal against SLU, but it looked to me that while he was hustling and doing everything he could, he was still missing some good scoring chances. Am I off-base on that?

No matter how this series goes, I love this time of year. The pressure of the playoffs is always exciting and intense. About the only thing I don't want to happen is OT on Saturday night (I have late night work to do...sucks being in IT sometimes). Here's hoping we have some good, exciting hockey in the Capital District this weekend.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

After all the head scratching this season, the playoffs begin. To know Rick Bennett is to like the Dutchmen in this environment, particularly at Achilles. Should be quite a weekend!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

If Bowling Green knocks off Notre Dame tonight it could boost their RPI to over .500 and make them a TUC. Union was 2-0 against them earlier in the season. Another thing to cheer for tonight.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

It's playoff time and my standard line / cliche is goaltending will be key. If Troy is on top of his game (I assume he will be starting), then we should will have an edge. I think Dartmouth's size up front poses some very real matchup problems for us but not insurmountable ones. Just hoping for a top notch effort and let the chips fall where they may. 8 wins to go! ;)

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

In addition to goaltending, the team that played two weeks ago needs to be the one who shows up this weekend and plays 120 consecutive minutes of good hockey. If the other team shows up, then I'm afraid that's it for the season.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

I just hope Union isn't slow out of the gate tonight. They haven't played in two weeks while Dartmouth went through a tough three game series last weekend. You can practice hard but there's no substituting for game action. Definitely want to set the tone early and keep it.

I think it's pretty safe to say that both teams are playing for their season this weekend. Union is currently 16th in the PWR and Dartmouth is 19th. I really don't see the loser of this series playing in the NCAAs.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Dartmouth is huge and has lots of great young talent, especially up front. Definitely a favorite for ECAC champ going forward especially as their freshman develop. Union has struggled with big strong teams (Cornell especially) in the past. Union is giving away 2-3" and 15-20 lbs / man.

Last year Bowling Green went from 11th seed to win the CCHA and that was in a more predictable league than the ECAC. I know that anything can happen and a random number generator may be a more accurate way to pick tonight's winner.

However, Dartmouth has only won three away games this year and two were in November against Brown. Union is 6-0-1 in the last 7 home games scoring 3.2+ and giving up less than a goal. Still, this has to be discounted.

A lot of the members of this Dutchman team played in Atlantic City last year. I know that experience was a very happy one for them. I recalled seeing a lot of happy Union players. Union and Atlantic City go together. The possibility of returning there has got to be a happy though. :)

There is a point, I think, where a team "smells blood", where they see something they want and they go after it with a vengeance. Where acid forms in the pit of their belly causing burning and severe pain. Where adrenaline drives away exhaustion and increases strength and endurance and focus.

In the end it really does not matter who they are playing tonight. There are two wins standing in the way of the Dutchman making it back to Atlantic City. I hope that is first and foremost on their mind.

Go Dutchman

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it up to Schenectady for the games this weekend, but I already booked everything for Atlantic City. Really hoping the Dutchmen can get the job done this weekend against Dartmouth, continue on to AC and then the National Tourney!

Go U!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Other than for injury, I would have been surprised not to see Troy in goal. Don't want to see any of those first shot goals, there have been a few of those, he needs to have his head in the game from the outset and I think he will. Although you look for your best leaders to carry the mail, I'd love to see a Roy or Ikkala type pitch in with an unexpected goal. That can provide a huge lift.
