Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

All around great effort tonight in all aspects of the game with the possible exception of the PP. Even strength scoring, once a concern has solidified. The team is quietly building on offense and has now scored in 10 consecutive periods going back to the third period of the Cornell loss. Troy was outstanding with a bunch of spectacular and breakaway saves. We went into the third up 2-1 just like last game against Dartmouth but this time no letdown. In fact this one was reminiscent of last season where,a lead into the third was as just about assured to be a win. Elimination games are the toughest and Dartmouth lost last Friday and came storming back. Plenty of work yet to do, but I liked what' I saw tonight (except for the whining Gaudet and Sikura's thuggish headshot to Dan Carr).

You pretty much hit the nail on the head, can't add anything to what you said.

Not sure who ****ed in Gaudet's cornflakes this morning, but he was even more whiny than usual. I can't believe he didn't pick up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty tonight. Would love to put the sweep on them tomorrow night and send that clown (and Sikura) home for the season.

Let's go U!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Totally agree with Wholin's comments. Nice to see the tone set right from the first drop of the puck and the smothering 3rd period to "seal the deal". Really need to finish things off tonight and not have any letup. This is where U was 2 seasons ago against Colgate and let it slip away, so will need an even better effort tonight. Do NOT want to see a game on Sunday.

And catching up on an older post..
I can't read the Simpson article for some reason, but I didn't see that he played any different than he had been. He did score the even-strength goal against SLU, but it looked to me that while he was hustling and doing everything he could, he was still missing some good scoring chances. Am I off-base on that?
The big difference with Simpson's game is the amount of jam he's showing. He actually threw several relatively effective body checks in the Clarkson/SLU series and played solid defense. His problem is when he plays too passively, waits for the puck to come to him, and gets too fancy trying to create a scoring opportunity. He's definitely simplified things and being a little more physical. He'll never be a big banger like Welsh, but good things will happen if he finishes checks and plays within the defensive system. Zajac was not a big player but was tough as nails and paid the price when he had to.. Wayne seems to be figuring this out.

I really thought Gaudet was going to pick up a bench minor, considering how much he was going at the ref....all for a potential player in the crease. My question...is that really reviewable?

I believe Dartmouth had a goal called off for that exact reason against Harvard when a goal was originally called on the play.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Pretty sportsmanlike comments by Daniel Carr last night that hockey is a physical and emotional game and that he didn't take the shot to his head "personally". I expect a lot more jump from Dartmouth from the outset tonight, I thought they looked sluggish early on last night or maybe it was Union's intensity out of the gate. I thought we owned the neutral zone and if we do the same tonight good things are possible. Dartmouth will be playing their fifth game in nine nights so we need to take advantage of any fatigue that may cause.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Dartmouth has come back from being down one in Quarterfinals four times since 2003 but they were all at home. They are great at Thompson Arena. Removing the two away wins against Brown in November, Dartmouth has won exactly one away game this year, against St.Lawrence. Union is now 7-0-1 in its past 8 home games scoring 3.75 (vs 2.96 season) and giving up 1.0 (vs 2.30 season).

Does all this matter? Nope.

What matters is that there are three periods of hockey standing in way of the Dutchmen and Atlantic City.

DOWN 0-1? NO PROBLEM!
Coming back to beat Harvard in three games was a bit of déjà vu for Big Green fans. In 2011, the Crimson took a 1-0 lead in the quarterfinals only to see Dartmouth come back and take the series in three. In all, four times since the 2003 postseason have the Green dropped the series opener to come back and take the final two. Each of those instancs have come at Thompson Arena. Dartmouth is 4-5 overall when losing the series’ first match-up.
2003 Quarterfinals vs. Colgate
L, 4-3 (4OT) / W, 3-1 / W, 5-2
2004 Quarterfinals vs. Rensselaer
L, 3-1 / W, 6-0 / W, 1-0
2011 Quarterfinals vs. Harvard
L, 3-2 / W, 2-1 (OT) / W, 4-3
2013 First Round vs. Harvard
L, 2-1 / W, 4-1 / W, 6-3

Dartmouth game 2 lines -

Up front:

Matt Lindblad - Tyler Sikura - Dustin Walsh
Connor Dempsey - Nick Bligh - Eric Neiley
Jesse Beamish - Charlie Mosey - Tim O'Brien
Brad Schierhorn - Alex Goodship - Eric Robinson

No extra forward tonight - Dartmouth head coach Gaudet going back to 6 defensemen with D Andy Simpson rejoining the lineup. Brett Patterson was the extra forward last night. Patterson is sitting this one out.

On defense:

Mike Keenan - Ryan Bullock
Geoff Ferguson - Taylor Boldt
Rick Pinkston - Simpson

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

This was a complete, 60-minute effort by the Dutchmen. Outside of two bad turnovers (Jooris & Ghost), this team did everything right in all phases of the game.

On to AC! I don't know if I'll be going, but I like this team's chances now...especially the way they've played their past 4 games.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

A great way to end the season at Messa and congratulations to the players & coaches for making it to AC! Sullivan had a whale of a game, nice to see him rewarded with a couple goals. The team seems to be peaking at just the right time and hopefully can do some damage next weekend.

Also want to note the very classy comments by Gaudet after the game (not to mention the poking fun at Ken ;)). He is definitely very emotional during the games, but some coaches are like that and mostly I don't begrudge any coach some gamesmanship when it comes to the refs, etc. It was definitely a frustrating weekend for Dartmouth, but was good that things didn't get out of hand at the end. They are a good young team and should make some noise again next season.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Postgame blog can be found here.

It was a pretty impressive weekend. Union didn't trail in either game and really reminded me of the kind of team we saw the last few years. This is now four games in a row with excellent performances and they really seem to be peaking at the right time. Whoever gets them on Friday will have a tough task.

These quarterfinal wins are always kind of bittersweet for me, though. Glad Union advances, but the idea of almost 7 months without a game at Messa is a downer. This regular season went by faster than even last years did.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 - Unfinished Business

Union draws Yale in the semi-finals at Atlantic City. Would've rather have went against Brown, but I think the boys match up favorably with Yale.

How many posters plan on going to Atlantic City? I'll be there for sure. It's a pretty bad trip, but it was worth every mile to see the team win last year.
