Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

Interesting start time, too....9:00pm. Really, NCAA? Providence is on eastern time, last I checked.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

Well...

Barry Melrose butchered the names of Grosenick and Shane Gostisbehere, but we're heading to Providence to face off against the defending champs, BC. Quinnipiac and Canisius will be joining us in the regional. Hopefully there will be a HUGE Union turnout. We cannot let BC [completely] take over the building.

Can't wait!! Let's GO U!

Someone ship me a Union jersey before next weekend; I'm sitting three rows from the ice, and I can assure you I will NOT be rooting for BC.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

Well I guess I can quit checking air fares to Detroit and Cleveland, thankfully. Might as well take on the defending champs...this is not supposed to be easy.

Good luck this weekend U! Take down BC and make the ECAC proud :)

It only gets harder this time of year. :D

Boston College isn't the same mighty powerhouse they were last year and Union certainly wasn't the steady, consistent team they were last year, either. At least Union is on a nice roll going into the tournament, where BC lost in the HE semifinals. Of course, that means nothing once the puck drops.

Can't wait for Saturday!

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

One last time .... by the numbers

Since Unions Loss to Cornell on January 18 by a score of 2-3

UNION Last twelve home games (all conference numbers)
(Atlantic City is considered a home game for the Dutchman - and its been very good home for us)

Record Last twelve home games
11-0-1
Scored 3.58 vs. 3.12 av season
Gave up 1.08 vs. 2.15 av season
Three (3) shutouts

Record last 6 games
6-0
Scored 4.33 vs. 3.12 av season
Gave up 0.83 vs. 2.15 av season
Two (2) shutouts

Union Record Neutral Site this year 2013 2-0
Union Record in Atlantic City 2012-2013 4-0

Boston College is "The Champ" and the dominant force in college hockey this past decade. Think Offense ..... extremely dangerous, lethal, explosive offensively.
Offense - ranked #1 in HE scoring 3.30
Defense - ranked #7 in HE giving up 2.70
Outstanding Power Plays - scoring and defense
Outstanding Forwards - best in College Hockey
Goalie is ranked 9th in HE but last year during playoffs rose to the occasion and won the MVP.

Yale tied BC 3-3, Dartmouth lost to BC 6-3, Harvard lost to BC 4-1
Massachusetts (1-3 against ECAC) beat BC
Dartmouth beat New Hampshire
Harvard beat BU (twice)

We are exactly where we want to be. The press and BC hockey blogs are not giving us a "snowballs chance in hell" and the BC hockey community is already making reservations for Pittsburgh. I can't even print some of the stuff they are saying about us and the ECAC. Knocking off the "Champ" would be a tournament win unto itself. No pressure on us this time. Because the game is late and the T Commuter Rail stops running past 10:00pm expect lower than anticipated BC fan turnout. We might show up with more folks that BC. That would be nice. This would make for a very loud win for us, a shot heard all across College Hockey. UML (Lowell) who we beat on the way to Tampa last year is trying to warn people about us but fortunately no one is listening.

According to my recollection, Union scored in 18 consecutive periods with the streak ending in the third period of the championship game. Now that's consistency.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

I'm really really really hoping that two of Union, Q, and Yale makes it to the FF. Union needs to beat BC on Saturday. Then I'm going to sit back and watch this board explode.

Considering BC folded like a cheap suit vs. BU in the semis, they've got no business mouthing off to anyone. Here's hoping U can finish them off and send them to the practice green. Stay out of the box and play your game boys.

They are still the reigning champions and used to playing on the big stage, but if they'd like to look past this game I won't be complaining.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

So how did we (ECAC) do against the other leagues this year? (WCHA, CCHA, HE, AH ?) What are the facts? I took these numbers from USCHO. I counted each game but could be off by one or two. This is very unscientific because only a few teams from each league competed with each other so its not a random sampling. In other words it does not mean a lot.

Atlantic Hockey: We were 17 - 7 - 5 This league is not a joke anymore and we cannot look past them. Those teams that do are going to get stung.
Hockey East: We were 14 - 16 - 4 Harvard saw a lot of action against HE and UML and BC did well against us.
CCHA: We were 7 - 5 - 2 We would have looked a lot better is Union had beaten Lake Superior
WCHA: We were 7 - 8 - 1 We did not really play the top of the league.

Can't really deduce a lot from this except that the leagues are probably more evenly matched in the middle than most people think.

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

Boston College is the defending NCAA Division 1 National College Hockey Champions. For the past decade they have been the dominant college hockey team in America and Boston is a big hockey town. Since 1998, Boston College has been to the Frozen 4 10 times. They have won the national title many times and as recently in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Their hockey home, Conte Forum, seats 7884 and is always packed. They have so many banners and trophy's and professional draft picks it makes your head spin. Union's Achilles Rink seats 2200 and is small in comparison to Boston College. So is the height and weight of our players. We have got to have the smallest team in the ECAC. (when their height and weight was taken I bet they were wearing their skates and pads). Our rafters have a few banners and we are making some progress. The trophy cases are still mostly empty.

Boston College defines excellence in college hockey in their play and coaching. They are the benchmark and the gold standard for programs around the country. They will come out aiming to prove that their conference loss to BU was a fluke. They will be ready to enthusiastically defend their title. Their coach, the winningest coach in all college hockey, who has been ill, will be returning to support them. Last year, as we know, their team was in a league by itself.

We are a "free pass" to Pittsburgh, a cakewalk (something easily accomplished) and the Providence Region is referred to as BC and it "munchkins". The ECAC was 14-16-4 or 13-17-5 against the HE this year but no never you mind.

This may not be for the national championship ...... it may be better. A shot at defeating the current and defending national champs on a regional stage when you and your team and your school and your league have been totally discounted. It does not get any better that this !!!!!!!:)

This really isn't unusual. I've been following this sport for a little over 20 years and every year, the contingents of the schools that are tops in the country (PWR and polls) buy their Frozen Four tickets and make hotel/flight reservations well in advance. Then once the teams lose, FF tickets go on sale all over eBay and Hockey-L. It's like a ritual in the college hockey world.

That said, if the fans want to give Union, Quinnipiac, & Canisius zero chance to get out of the region, so be it. As Dutchman said in the most recent post, BC is the defending champion and has more than a solid chance of winning it again this year. If their fans want to feel entitled, let them. They certainly shouldn't have much to talk about since they have no championships to brag about - at least Union won their conference tournament. The game is played on the ice and I don't think Jerry York will let his team look past Union.

Along the same lines, Union has no reason to feel entitled just because they won the ECACs or because they made it to the Frozen Four a year ago. I'm sure Rick Bennett will not let the boys forget that this week.

Union will have 3 sections at The Dunk in Providence this weekend: Section 104, 105, and 106.

The Alumni Office will be having a pre-game reception at the Rí Rá Pub in Providence – 50 Exchange Street, Providence, RI - $15 pp = 7-9 pm.

If this Ri Ra's is even half as good as the one in Burlington, VT then you will all have a good time. Enjoy! :)

The one in Providence is identical to the one in Burlington, except with better musicians (when there are live bands, based on an admittedly small sample size).

Re: Union Hockey 2012-2013 Part II - See U in AC, But Ultimate Goal Still Lies Ahead

Some very helpful information from kdiff77 in the Brown thread:

The Marriott Courtyard is in the same plaza as Ri Ra; perhaps you should look into that. I don't know what their rates are like, but it's just two blocks from the Dunk and is essentially in the middle of downtown. The Hilton is a little further away from that area. I don't know what your budget is like, but the Westin is connected to the Dunk via the RI Convention Center, and the Biltmore is just a couple blocks away. Those are two of the more expensive places in the area.

I'm not sure what it'll be like this weekend, but before PC basketball games, every bar in the downtown area is PACKED and it's really fun. I'd recommend Trinity Brewhouse or the Union Station Brewery as good places to go for really good food. Bar Louie, right next to Ri Ra, is also great, but the service can be a little slow. These places are all incredibly crowded on Friars' gameday, but they should be considerably less so for this weekend, as the teams all play at different times.

If you have some down time, head up College Hill and check out Brown's campus! :) It's beautiful, and there are some good hole-in-the-wall eateries on Thayer Street if you're looking for a quick bite to eat. Loui's Family Restaurant on Brook Street is where all the Brown students go for breakfast food if that interests you. It's one of the best diners in the area, but it closes at 3:00 p.m.

Have fun! We'll be pulling for you guys.
