Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

wasn't Dillon Pieri (Goalie) supposed to be coming this fall?

I think you are correct. Heis still shows him as a commit, but with all due respect I think he was looked at as strictly a practice, third goalie type of player. If we are patient I think we will see something on goalie situation fairly soon.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Heard today that Colin Stevens will be attending Union this fall. Don't see him getting much to any playing time this year but could turn out to be a great year for him to work on things and get bigger, he definitely has a lot of potential and could easily be a number one in a few years.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

And now Heisenberg is showing Stevens coming this Fall, so that is probably the answer.. In the long run I think this is a good move, as it avoids a bit of a messy situation with potentially 4 goalies in '12 if someone else is brought in now. However, I think it makes for an iffy situation for this upcoming season.

Grosenick is probably the main man and there really is very little to judge him on so far. I thought he looked solid in the couple outings he had last season but is hard to tell how he will do consistently in higher pressure games. Also, he had only a 90% save percent in the USHL (on a good team too) and typically there is a 1-2% drop when moving to college. Even if he stays at 90%, that would be below average goaltending in the ECAC and could be a big problem against the heavyweights on the non-conf schedule.

As for Stevens, he was excellent last season in the EJHL but he is young (just turned 18 a couple weeks ago) and needs to develop more physically (was listed at 6-2 162#). The EJ is also not the most competitive league out there either. IMO would have been nice for him to have a year in the USHL.. but the future is now and if Grosenick struggles I would expect to see Stevens get a shot.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

I wouldn't be surprised if we get a late commitment there are goalies out there that could be a starter at Union or any other school but are looking for a school that they could go to and play right away and right now Union offers that chance, not a bad recruiting deal when you can tell a goalie that is above average that if they come in they could be the starter.

Interesting, Heisenberg now shows LaPlante heading to Providence in the fall....

LOL:p.. the surreal offseason continues, though its probably the least that Leaman could do.. I really hope the team comes back this fall with a seriously P.O.ed "we'll show em" attitude after all this b.s. Sounds like Zajac and Jooris did very well in their NHL prospects camps.. there is plenty of talent returning.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

..and next year's freshmen are finally announced. Confirms that Stevens and Gostisbehere are coming.

While I'm disappointed that Brown and LaPlante are not part of the class, this is still a solid class. Novak is reportedly very fast and could be another John Simpson (though Bennett compares him to Wayne, which is not shabby either). Mingoia and Ciampini should help offensively, though I'm not sold yet on Ciampini's skating. I'm expecting Sam Coatta to earn a regular spot on the "energy line" as the next Andrew Buote - he is reportedly fast and is a gritty "in your face" player. Fulton is also worth keeping an eye on, as he put up huge numbers in Minnesota HS a couple seasons ago and could have more offensive potential than he showed in the USHL last season.

On the blueline, Gostisbehere is a little undersized but has outstanding offensive potential, and Vasaturo is one big tough dude. Stevens also has outstanding potential in goal - which obviously is the KEY position next season.

IMO this class does a good job of complementing the returning players and should have U in the running again for a successful season.

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Not true. Since he didn't lace up the skates for the Dutchmen, he doesn't have to sit.

I believe the sitting for a year does not have to deal with lacing up for the Dutchmen, but rather for the earlier discussion regarding his previous play in other leagues. See post #296.

Correct 'Dude, that is what I was referring to. BTW, rumor has it that our former coach is burning all bridges. LaPlante's departure was not a defection, however, he was shown the door.

I knew that Union had just lost their goalie. But, somehow, I had forgotten his name in the past week. D'oh.

Yeah, it's apparent that Nate is having no problems adjusting to the high ethical and academic standards at Providence ..

As for LaPlante, it really was a no brainer for the coaches. In order to have him still come they would have either had 5 goalies in '12 or tell Stevens "sorry but you can't come"..

ADK, I may be overlooking something but I'm not sure I see where there would have been 5 goalies. Doesn't Stevens bring the number to 3?

Re: Union Hockey 2011 Off Season Thread-"Union, We've Paid Our Dues"

Wow - that took all of about 2 1/2 months for the faithful to turn Nate into public enemy #1...:p Gotta be some kind of a record!
Not sure I really want to resurrect the whole Nate thing, but what the heck, it's the dog days of summer. My statement had to do with other recruiting issues of which I have become aware and not involving LaPlante. I think Nate has put himself into a highly pressurized situation where he is being paid big money and results will be expected to improve maybe not this season, but very soon and very significantly. By contrast he left a low pressure environment where expectations and pressure to win are far lower.

If LaPlante had come as expected there would have been 4 goalies in '12. So if Bennett wanted to "stockpile" LaPlante for a year he would have had to bring in another goalie for this season, which would make 5 goalies in '12.. which is insane.

Care to elaborate on these "issues"?

I can't be too specific because of my sources (I know that sounds very cryptic but I want to share as much with everyone as I am at liberty to do) but I can say that I've been told that Nate has not had a "handsoff" policy with regard to announced recruits. I realize this is double hearsay, but I would not post it if I wasn't confident of its accuracy.
