Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

That's just what the doctor ordered. That's the best I've seen Union this year and I've seen them 5 times now. They seemed much more in sync offensively and their passing was generally pretty good. Carr getting going was a huge plus. A much needed win and hopefully they come back in two weeks with Hatch and Vasaturo ready to go.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Well, I can safely say that I liked THAT lineup tonight :D:D. Congrats to the players and coaches! Very nice to finally see Carr AND Jooris get some points. I think both of them had lost a little confidence, so hopefully this turns things around. Solid bounce-back game from Troy-G too.

Overall, I can live with what happened over the past 5 days and I think the coaches & players can use the 2 losses as learning experiences. The Brown game is the perfect example of what U is going to see from quite a few teams this year - namely tight checking and trapping. Hopefully the coaches can come up with some strategies to break similar types of traps.. or it could be a long season. The Yale game on the other hand was a great example of how important it is to keep gap control and not give away pucks in the neutral zone or get caught up ice. We also need to keep in mind that Yale is an excellent team and when you play an excellent team there will be some period(s) in the game when they will dominate. The key to winning is weathering those storms with minimal damage and then responding back with dominating play. U actually did respond well on Saturday, but they didn't weather the early barrage well and obviously couldn't convert their pressure into goals. Not pretty to watch, but it happens. BU did it to BC over the weekend to the tune of 5-0..

So, plenty still to work on and a little time off till the next game may be just what the team needs. The next month & a half will be highly challenging and could make or break U's PWR.. Michigan, Merrimack, Denver, & CC all are or have been in the top 5 in the country.. and the "breather" games will be Quinny, Princeton & RPI.. with no games at home. By the end of the year we will definitely know what kind of team we've got here.

Well that was much better. Troy looked sharp, as did the rest of the team. There were points where we absolutely dominated, which I was happy to see.

I'm thinking that when Hatch gets back in the lineup, Yanovitch shouldn't have a spot. I just don't see it with him.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

I was surprised by a couple of things. First how after the first 5 minutes or so, Union totally took control and conversely by how little resistance RPI put up. It was odd to see one of these rivalry games not go down to the last millisecond. Big, big win for Union. 3-2 in league vs. 2-3 would be a bitter pill to swallow during the break. Carr took a nasty slash late in the second and skated right of the ice to the locker room, he came back with his wrist bandaged and picked up where he left off.

Yano has been pretty consistent in taking a bad penalty or two.. something for which the previous coach (who shall remain nameless) had little tolerance (e.g. Boileau). I suspect the coaches may want a senior presence on the 3rd/4th lines and he does usually bring good energy.. but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Was surprised that RPI did not really put up much of a fight. I thought they would be a little more stoked after finally getting a win on Saturday, but they seemed kind of passive after U got the lead. Appert's got some work to do to get things going over there..

Carr is a tough, humble kid who works really hard and I was very glad to see him have a big night. He's been taking lots of shots so far this season but, to use the b-ball term, they have not been hitting the twine. I think being on the Zajac-Simpson line is a great fit, as they are dynamic passers and should give Daniel lots of good shooting opportunities.

I think your description of Carr is apt for the entire team. I know Coach preaches staying humble and means it.

If anyone wants to see the game from the other night, RPI TV has an HD quality stream of the game here.

Tonight's results were definitely interesting. Yale, UNH, and Brown all lost. The 3 teams Union has lost to.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Injury updates from Ken Schott -

Vasaturo (lower body) questionable this weekend.

Hatch (lower body) and M.Bennett (mono) will not make the trip.

In other news, Adam Presizniuk has been loaned to Providence of the AHL by Trenton of the ECHL. He had 10 points (3-7) in 15 games for Trenton.

And Coaches Corner returns tonight at 6 PM on 1160/1240 AM.

If only the Big 10 Network was airing the game on Sunday. A hockey game between ranked schools sure beats womens college basketball (what they're airing instead). But at least we have radio.
