Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Thanks. I think that I have gotten that wrong my entire life. Should "deserts" be pronounced as the place full of sand also?
No, still pronounced the same as "desserts," hence the confusion. The nice thing is that you never get it wrong when speaking - only when writing!

edit: see also "desevrings" (is that still a meme?)

Union lines are in: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lzx12mZl3W1qcayzi.jpg

** Grosenick, who left Saturday's game with a bad ankle, gets the start.

Compared to last Saturday's lines:

** Max Novak replaces Daniel Ciampini on the Sullivan-K.Bodie line.

** Cole Ikkala replaces Brian Yanovitch on the Bennett-Coatta line.

A little more than an hour 'til game time, and I'm stressed already.

Me too :p

I've been listening to rdf's great Messa Music playlist on Youtube to get pumped for tonight. Second straight Cleary Cup on the line, LET'S GO U!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

I know its not the end of the year if we don't repeat as regular season champs, but it would be nice and it would help validate the changing of the players and coaching guard at Union in coaching...

Although, without the pressure of maintaining the lead dog status, it might be easier to focus on playing better hockey to try to win the ECAC and ultimately win a few if not all of the NCAA games....

I probably deserve some negative rep for jinxing the team with this statement.....

However, I have been a Union fan long enough to know that not winning the big games and not protecting leads is quite common in the history of Union sports.....

There is still a lot to play for tomorrow against the 'Gate, especially with the PWR comparisons.

However, I still feel that doing well in the ECAC's and the NCAA's is far more important than seeding or a Cleary Cup.

Besides, if we meet Cornell in the Tourney, it will be in AC and the seeding won't matter, IMHO......

On a side note, I hear a lot about Union's "deceptive" NCAA banner in Messa. What exactly does the banner say? Does anyone have a pic link they can post?

Thanks.

Keith.

My guess is that it says "NCAA Championship" and then lists the years that Union participated in the tournament which crowns the NCAA champion, which could be interpreted as years that Union actually won the tournament rather than just participated.

RPI has a similar banner but it reads Mens Hockey NCAA tournament appearances

If that is the case, then I would agree that the banner would be deceptive.

However, Union has waited forever for some hockey success that they could commemorate, so I would give the AD and the team the benefit of the doubt as far as sincerity.....

The last two seasons have proven that Union belongs in both the ECAC and the NCAA D-I scenes....

As a graduate, I am biased, so take it for what it's worth...

OK, I think it could be fixed by putting something like "Regional Semis" next to the year and then they could keep putting in years and the results.

I think "Appearances" is a little better, but once the banner was OK'ed and produced, you gotta work with it.....

It's not like the banner said "Champions" on it, but I see the grey area here and the fodder for all the haters down the road on East NY Route 7, especially WaP.........

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

That was a tough loss last night. For the majority of the game, Union just didn't look good. Cornell controlled the pace of the game and Union wasn't able to generate much sustained momentum. In the Gazette recap, Bennett was quoted as saying “We didn’t have it... for whatever reason, we got pushed around.” Union failing to capitalize even once on their 6 PPs really stings. The game winning goal for Cornell is even harder to swallow - the guy that scored it had no goals on the year and got by two Union defenders. That's not something I've seen very much of this year. I don't blame Grosenick for that goal. It was a game Union had to win - not only did the loss severely damage their Cleary Cup chances, it dropped them from 7 to 11 in the PairWise. Cornell rose to a tie for 9th.

Tonight's game is big, since Colgate split with Miami earlier in the year and they themselves are a TUC........Our wins over Michigan and Merrimack are paying dividends lately since Merrimack worked over Lowell last night and Michigan got back on track for a late season run.....A win tonight could right the ship and put the Garnet in a better mood for the playoffs....Both teams played poorly last night, so we will see which team wants it more.....A regular season title is nice since it reflects a consistency of winning throughout the entire year. However, Union needs to show it can win the big games to prove it truly belongs and to help dissolve some of the hype....Besides, Cornell is effectively 10th in the PWR, so they are close by....Maybe if both Cornell and Union can stay in the top 14 and someone else upsets to win the ECAC, we can have three ECAC teams in the NCAA's....The thought of that being possible was very remote only just a few weeks ago,.....The boys have done well this year after tough 3rd period losses or ties...I hope they can use this folly from last night to motivate themselves into a win at Starr tonight.

Let's Go U!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 Season Thread "We Can See Cleary Now"

Huge win!

Cleary Cup stays in Schenectady!

I must send props to RPI for the assist.......I feel good about how RB, DrD, FD and most of the other RPI folks feel after taking it Cornell on their Senior night and playing spoiler to their Cup and #1 seed chances.......(Of course, RC is still in his cave, talking to himself about the "Precious"....)

Now, Union has to be all about the "TCB"......If they make another early exit, all of the hard work during the regular season will be wasted and the haters will have their fodder and rightly so......

Good job all and enjoy the evening!!!

Let's go U!!

Keith.

What a night it was to follow everything going on between U-COL and RPI-COR. For awhile, it looked like Union was going to share the Cleary, but RPI came through late to give Union the Cleary outright. It's another huge accomplishment for Union. Winning a regular season title was unthinkable not too long ago and now Union has done it back to back. Winning the Cleary might have clinched the Tim Taylor Coach of the Year Award for Rick Bennett. But UnionTrack is right, as nice as another Cleary is, this team can't afford another early exit in the league tournament. At the very least, they need to make it to Atlantic City.

It looks like Union will either get 5th seeded Quinnipiac or 12th seeded Brown in two weeks. Union is 1-0-1 vs Q'Pac and 0-2-0 vs Brown. Brown, which hasn't won since they beat Union on 1/21, is the only team to have beaten Union 2x this year.

Union is up to 9th in the PWR. Cornell slides to a tie for 14th.

Actually, after the first round, they re-seed and Union will get the lowest remaining seed left. That would make the range from #12 Brown to #8 SLU. Obviously, Brown is on the radar due to the losses and I think everyone should have RPI on the radar with this big end of season push.....

Regardless, I was on the edge of my seat with both games going on...What a reversal of mood from last night...Resignation to jubilation! :D

Keith.

EDIT: Cornell has dropped to #16 in the PWR. There will be some more shaking out as the night goes on, but that puts them on the outside looking in right now for the NCAA's

You do know they reseed after each round, right? They won't necessarily play one of those two teams.....There's still a possibility that U could see RPI in round 2.
