Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

This entire run I've been one of the first to post about Union's successes...

I will be the first post of the current "failure"...

Massive props to Ferris State for a great game...

Tough way to end it...

Good job to the boys and everyone in Garnet...

Be safe.

Keith.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

It's pretty sad to see it all end, but if we were told in October that we'd be playing in April, I think we would have been thrilled... the silver lining is there that it was the greatest season in program history, but it's still difficult to see it come to an end.

Congrats and respect from this RPI fan on a great season and postseason, Union. Don't mind watching Union succeed as I have bigger issues with Cornell and Clarkson. But, I can finally stop pretending to be a Dutchmen fan ;) It was a good way to represent the ECAC. See you all next season!

Congrats to Union on a great season. Tough way to end, but we've been there ourselves (22 yrs ago). It's a bitter pill to swallow. With your depth on the roster, who knows...you may find yourselves playing in April next year.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

I'm not even going to dignify the other thread.

Congrats, boys. Great season. Teams like ours aren't supposed to get this far in the first place.

*raises glass to Union*

Fantastic season Union! From the win outside at Fenway Park, to capturing the Cleary Cup, winning the league tournament and earning a trip to the Frozen Four. Im jealous. :)

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Congratulations on a terrific season. Can't wait for next year!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Great game today Union and a great season too. I'm sorry about the outcome, but hey someones got to lose in the playoffs.

On a side note, I'm not sure whose pep-band was playing lady gaga and katie perry... shame on you!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Great season Union!!!! Good game except the last 4 minutes. Thought the penalties and lack of penalties against Ferris were a little suspect but overall a great game.

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Well fought game. Tough loss. Great season. Thanks for doing the ECAC proud!

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

Union's power play didn't get the chance to factor into the game. I think Ferris averaged 15 PIM a game this year. Today? 2. Maybe Ferris played more disciplined today, who knows. Some of the officiating was suspect - the elbowing call on Bodie was bad and there was a bad no call after one of the Union guys got punched in the back of the head. That's just offhand. I don't want to blame the refs... Union did lose to a good team ... but it wasn't the best officiated game I've seen this year.

Hansen was reffing. He does ECAC games. Blame him if you want.

Lose your coach and an All American goalie and still end up in the FF the following season...what a show! Rick Bennett's and the team's accomplishments this year have been phenomenal. Can't wait until October...but what to do in the interim?

Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2

In the interim, Union is going to lose two outstanding seniors... Kelly Zajac, one of the all-time point leaders in school history. Also graduating is Nolan Julseth White, a defenseman's defenseman and by all accounts a great leader.

Jeremy Welsh, a junior who soon turns 24, is likely gone as well - even Bennett said "it doesn't look good."

Grosenick, a sophomore, probably will get some offers. I'd lean towards guessing he'll stay one more year, but wouldn't be stunned if he left. For comparison's sake, Kinkaid had a lot more ice time in his two years than Grosenick has had. In the event Grosenick leaves, Colin Stevens has the potential to be a great goaltender as well.... he showed some flashes this year as an 18 year old freshman. Stevens has to get bigger - he'sa little wiry at 6'2/170 and probably has room to put on 15-20 more pounds.

Some promising recruits are coming in. Matt Wilkins won the AJHL scoring title and that offensive potential won't hurt with the loss of Zajac and likely Welsh. David Roy, a 6'3 forward, is also due in the fall and he put up 67 points in 59 games in the CCHL. Sebastian Gingras, a 6'2 defenseman, is a teammate of Roy and registered 43 points in 58 games. Nick Cruice, a forward, should be here in the fall and tallied more than a point a game in the EJHL.

Union won't be falling off the map.

Announced about 20-25 minutes ago, Jeremy Welsh has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes.

RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Director of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed forward Jeremy Welsh to an entry-level contract. The one-year deal will pay Welsh $832,500 on the NHL level and $70,000 on the AHL level, along with a signing bonus of $92,500. He will join the Hurricanes in Ft. Lauderdale for the team’s final game of the 2011-12 NHL season.

“Of all of the college free agents available, we identified Jeremy as the one who most fit our organizational needs,” said Francis. “He provides another big body for us down the middle, and is a player who has shown character and leadership at the college level, in addition to scoring ability.”

That's a great opportunity for him, one certainly well-deserved. And hardly surprising.

We can consider this the price of success.
