Re: Union Hockey 2011-2012 season thread #2
In the interim, Union is going to lose two outstanding seniors... Kelly Zajac, one of the all-time point leaders in school history. Also graduating is Nolan Julseth White, a defenseman's defenseman and by all accounts a great leader.
Jeremy Welsh, a junior who soon turns 24, is likely gone as well - even Bennett said "it doesn't look good."
Grosenick, a sophomore, probably will get some offers. I'd lean towards guessing he'll stay one more year, but wouldn't be stunned if he left. For comparison's sake, Kinkaid had a lot more ice time in his two years than Grosenick has had. In the event Grosenick leaves, Colin Stevens has the potential to be a great goaltender as well.... he showed some flashes this year as an 18 year old freshman. Stevens has to get bigger - he'sa little wiry at 6'2/170 and probably has room to put on 15-20 more pounds.
Some promising recruits are coming in. Matt Wilkins won the AJHL scoring title and that offensive potential won't hurt with the loss of Zajac and likely Welsh. David Roy, a 6'3 forward, is also due in the fall and he put up 67 points in 59 games in the CCHL. Sebastian Gingras, a 6'2 defenseman, is a teammate of Roy and registered 43 points in 58 games. Nick Cruice, a forward, should be here in the fall and tallied more than a point a game in the EJHL.
Union won't be falling off the map.
